- Twenty-two passengers from Singapore Airlines Flight SQ321 suffered spinal cord injuries when the plane hit severe turbulence on May 21. Six are being treated for skull and brain injuries. CNA's Jill Neubronner spoke to Dr Dennis Hey, Head and Senior Consultant at the Division of Spine Surgery at Alexandra Hospital, and Senior Consultant at the University Spine Centre at the National University Hospital, to find out more about their chances for recovery.

*Jill is brilliant here for filtering out the heavy medical jargon and nuances used by this doctor seems quite sonorous and can be hard for layman to graple with but still this Doctor speaks very well and clear*
In English, what does this mean? He was speaking in English, just not in layman terms.
@@ipodee78 I also find that very unprofessional.
@@ipodee78 Perhaps she can ask him to speak in simple layman term would be more appropriate cos indeed Dr was speaking in English but the medical term is too technical even myself who is highly proficient in English needs to digest that neuro medical term for few seconds
@@pwkhang Shes not unprofessional perhaps a little tactless but its a minor oversight overall Jill is a great presenter and interviewer
He was trying to say jargon cause the answer was bleak
*The injuries look serious and can have life long impact especially on elderly patients and those already having underlying medical issues*
Hope SQ will take responsibility as the costs through a lifetime isnt going to be cheap. Some may not be able to work like before
@@lindc1070they shouldn't take responsibility for the weather or people's refusal to put on seatbelts
@@storageaccount6558 did people refuse to put on seatbelts? You need to get your facts right first. The sign was switched off and meal service was going on. Nobody refused to put on seat belts. Have some compassion for the passengers whose lives have been ruined for life. SIA gave out 8 months bonus to their staff recently. Surely they can afford to do the right thing for their passengers. Anyway we need to wait to see if the weather is to blame 100% or would another pilot have handled things differently
Will the victims say, "Aiya, Bo Bian one lah"? Will they accept the adversity?
@@lindc1070 Can some treatment be paid using Medisave ?
I was in a school bus accident. I hit the top and came down destroying my spine from a compression injury. My students had minor issues. I was trying to get to them because they were crying for me. 25 years later, I still suffer every day.😢
What are you suffering on ?
Same thing happened to me but people say I fake my injury 😢 I suffered for almost 2 years till I was treated by a Chinese physician. The English called it compressed nerves but the Chinese called it 筋糯. To simplify it is the energy path and it was blocked due to the incident. Of coz there could be more severe spinal cord injuries than mine.
Pain I suffered include but not limited to severe sensations over my back to legs to hands. It can come in itch, burning, aches, etc. My condition worsen if I carry things , things which can be as light as 2kgs, or climb steps. The above mentioned are part but not the worst. The worst part is not able to sleep every night due to the sensations and only able to sleep in the early morning something like 3-4am. The mental wellbeing is badly compromised and worse off there are people who do not hear of these and think I am just faking my injury. Stem cell injection, acupuncture, pain management and even pain killers such as tramadol and nerve medicine such as lyrica doesn’t have any effect
@@littlemiltontoyandgamescha4557How are you doing now if i may ask... Pray for your recovery..
@@littlemiltontoyandgamescha4557 Are what you suffering now due to turbulence ?
Nerve damage never regenerate however neuroplasticity may help.
The will to live + seeing yourself not in a wheelchair is already a challenge to most.
Being paralysed for the rest of your life & not able to do all the things you enjoy is a life sentence to many.
You have not mentioned depression, suicide & ptsd yet.
Indeed it can be a life long sentence cos spinal cord is the main part of the nervous system that link to the brainstem
Spinal cord injuries doesn’t necessarily mean paralysis, it might mean being in pain forever.
@@JojoJoget Where did I say it links to paralysis ? But the fact is it affects the nervous system that is control by the brain cell and it can be a life long disruption from the norms
Their bodies will never be the same again. There was no warning given to the passengers when it all happened 😡
We should stay at home. It's safer
Good to have these insights with experts here at least publics can learn from this turbulence aftermath
Include these souls injured in our prayers for recovery , no matter how long it takes…. their wellbeing in mind and body, and also for their loved ones.
I pray for those with spinal cord injuries a speedy recovery so that the immediate family doesn't need to suffer the agony
CNA Staff: in english what does it mean?.. aint he speaking english already? haha
Nerve damage can be devastating not only from not being able to walk again because of a severed spinal cord, but there are millions of nerves all over the body that when injured can leave you in long term chronic pain for many years, I myself was a pedestrian hit by a vehicle 2 years ago and had blunt force trauma to my face fracturing my nose and then I developed pricking tingling and intense burning sensations on forehead, nose, temples and the pain is constant 24/7 and all you get from doctors is Lyrica or Amitriptyline meds with a ton of negative side effects but no diagnoses until recently after seeing 3 specialists and now referred to pain management and finally they say I got post traumatic trigeminal neuropathy which is different from classical trigeminal neuralgia and it interferes with every aspect of daily life and has a big effect on mental health also
you were hit by cyclist, pedestrain scooter, motorised pedestrain vehicle, or car on the road?
*Am pretty sure soon CNA Insider will do a documentary on Airplane Turbulence and Safety Measure especially on seat belt issue and am so looking forward to watch it*
CNA Insider should be doing a documentary and interview the people and the Australian guy that did not receive any care response from SIA u til he appears on ABC News. I think that will have more viewers.
Local media trying very hard to cover up the whole thing.
@@Scambuster491 Yup that Adelaide guy will have more meaty and factual story to share cos he was hit on the head and his wife is suffering from severe spinal cord injury and now still unable to feel any sensation waist down
You like the idea of having to ask the air hostess to take you to the toilet?
Aircraft did not free fall 6000 feet as reported. On stabilising aircraft when approaching Bangkok airport aircraft descended to 31000 feet from 37000 feet. Please report correctly. Thanks
But isn’t 37-31 a difference of 6? What’s wrong in saying it dropped 6000 feet which it did. From 37000 to 31000
@@mytravlsIt is simply misleading. Saying that it “dropped” from the air means that it just fell from the air, but it was actually a controlled descent.
yeah news interviews from ex pilots in Australia mention the data they saw on flight tracking sites was a controlled decent. not free falling or plugging 6000ft
If it was controlled descent, why did people got flung to the ceiling?

That's very sad and unfortunate on getting those injuries 😢
Very good work there, Jill. Don't let the guest get away with that medical jargon.
Doctor uses Oxford and Cambridge English like guarded and deficit? I thought deficit is used in financial statements, can also be used to describe for injuries recovery. Can give a breakdown how many passengers or % of them were injured in each cabin class? E.g. 0% in First Class seats, 5% in Business Class seats, 95% in Economy Class seats.
Interesting. I want to know that too. From what I know . The British guy who passed away was in
business class
Now the world started to heed the message that has been repeated trillions times on any airline plane "Please be seated and buckle your seat belt".
Yes. Yet watch the injured people sue the airline....
Why has this not happened on an Airbus? Compared to the additional issues with the Boeing stock? Are there additional tests needed on these aircraft?
Is this really due to turbulences only? Turbulences usually shake the plane rather than causing it to also drop that much. There might be other issues at play as well.
The problem is not keeping the seatbelt on (unless you're going to the restroom, of course). The airplane can really shake badly while going on a turbulence.
@@CatarinaCastroBR Around Bermuda where the turbulence is usually very strong there are lots of shaking rather than dropping. Here it is the drop that caused people to be thrown "upwards". This is similar to a car accelerating very quickly and the passenger feels pushed against her seat (in the opposite direction). In this case there is a sudden and fast drop downward and therefore the passenger is pushed in the opposite direction (that is upward).
I think CNA needs to stop saying that the aircraft fell 6000ft. It didn’t.
No it only fell 6 feet.
Source?
@@jessicaregina1956 The question is how many feet you have ?
The steep plunge was true, many tracked the latitude but these halfwits didn't wear the seat belt. Those who fell asleep were still okey.

Will be given free for life travels on sq321? Will airbags be installed on the ceiling areas? How about anti-gravitons?
Also those who likes to travel also must take risks no matter what mode of travel, that's the meaning of travel.
SIA is partially liable for damages. Sue SIA until it files for chapter 11. This is a multi million dollar lawsuit.

Next to physiotherapy is craniosacraltherapy, ostheopathy and also acupuncture..that can then work very well as there is not just the injury but the shock in the system as well.
Chiropractic adjustments help alot, the body has the ability to heal itself.
Such spinal nerve damage cannot be healed that easy from Chiropractic because it has been traumatised
Even though the body can heal itself with mild injuries. But injuries like Spinal nerve damage can never be heal by the body itself…
CNA pay attention. The host talks nonsense about "free falling for 6,000 feet". After the turbulence, the captain made a 6,000 feet descent toward Bangkok from 37,000 feet to 31,000 which was not part of the turbulence event, but a standard controlled descent to a new flight level and took about 6 minutes at a normal rate of descent. It is all clear from the flight data, which is public. The data shows the turbulence before that: sudden changes in flight level starting at 07:49:24 UTC for about a minute, and the largest drop was about 550 feet. Stop reporting nonsense please, and pay attention. Many media also have already corrected this incorrect reporting. And I made comments to your mistakes on this previously. Hope you also correct this right away and apologise for your previous incorrect and unprofessional reporting. You can thank me
you actually have another video that gives a reasonably correct description. Don't you people at CNA talk to each other? Why was the lady talking here not informed? Will she publicly apologise?
I feel so sorry for those who injured. I flew ard 15 times in the past 10 years and that Irrawddy basin area almost never failed to have turbulence... and we do not know what the Myanmar rebellion are doing, did they launch something to cause the air flow? the expert is good and honest...on the other hand, I think SIA already forseen lawsuit cases coming without a doubt... the Australians already voiced loud...
The flight should have deviated extream weather build up like other traffic in the area to avoid injuries.
Who is paying for their serious injuries? Hope its not SIA, always the boleh. Had the crew kept the passengers strictly belted in, maybe no serious injuries? Disclaimer: maybe implies maybe not also
I am getting high level of anxiety and fear, I am due to fly but also I have recently hurt my back muscles and something happening like this will definitely seriously injure me
These will be lifelong injuries.....I know.
How to cope medical cost for such lifelong injuries ? Will insurance cover that ?
@@bobafett5757 I'm sure there will be insurances. Travel insurances will take care of it , when you travel by plane you will have insurance from the airline and their personal insurance that they have to do when traveling abroad and their own personal insurances as well . 500000 usd all together at least . enough? I don't know
Why they never wear belt?
The did not freefall 600 feet.
Yeah it's 6,000 in 4 minutes.
Why did SIA take the route where turbulence always exist, when other airlines avoid?
No one remembered to pray before boarding the plane😮.
So now people will sue SIA for damages. Despite the standard announcements which recommend keeping seatbelt fastened at all times.
Thank God for his miracle n mintry hand ✋ to save them is a very scary experience my son also works at the cabin crew everyday must pray for them is not easy and save jobs thank God for his protection and strength Amen 🙏 Thank you 🙏 Jesus for saving their life Amen Regina and family Amen 🙏 Jesus ❤everyone don’t take life for granted and likely Amen 🙏 always be grateful and thankful to him AMEN 🙏 our future is in his hands 🙌

Should seat belts be made mandatory since technology is unable to detect the clear air turbulence now
It should but Clear Air turbulence as severe as this one was very very very rare tho. It might never happen again or if it does probably another 100 years or so. And even we made it mandatory Will people follow it?
Wonder there was a co pilot with the pilot …?
Dunno what happened in the cockpit big mystery

People still traveling and don't forget it's a matter of time before the next biggest spike in cases, and it maybe their last travel of their lives.
This is why the gospel is needed at this time. Complete forgiveness is being offered to every man since "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Just like the law of the land, disobedience may mean a death penalty. We all have broken the laws of the holy God and the sentence is about to fall on men- a terrible time ahead. But one can escape the wrath to come. Scriptures tell us to turn away from sin and come to Jesus Christ to be saved to the utmost. He lived a perfect life of obedience in our behalf, died to take the penalty for our sins, and rose again to bestow His righteousness on us. Then He will come the second time on earth to be the Great Judge over all mankind. All those who did evil and rejected Him will be tormented in Hell. While there is time, come to Jesus Christ and ask Him to save you. Save yourself from the wrath to come. Read the Bible, God's written word to be your guide in life.
SIA will have to cover their medical bills for life
Nah, act of God incidents cannot be used in a law suit. These people just need to hope their insurances were good, because that's the only financial support they'll be getting, apart from good will.

Singapore says passengers can put in their claims as soon as the plane incident; Singapore thinks money is everything
Money is everything in this case. Aftermath it's all about money
22 people are not using seatbelt.
Stop doing that with injured ppl! There are other issu s that caused that incident and that will learnt in a while. Pilots do walk around without seat belts, they do not wear them all the time, they even have sleeping cabin in bog airplanes etc. Passengers could stand up to take pampers from the shelf, urgent meds, whatever, go toilet. Why? Because no sign of awareness was there. You would like to say,a guy who died from the heart attack was jumping around as a naked bar boy, or a pregnant woman had a disco on board when the seatbelt sign was on? I was in such a situation, same incident in the air, I know how aircraft falls and what's up inside. The reason we rushed in the air bubble was inmaturr decision of the young pilot, who could delay flight but proceeded despite weather issues, still, gladly, he had some training and knowledge and managed proper the situation. Passengers had seconds before airccraft started to increase speed while falling and titling ahead, they had a chance to fasten the belts and take any closest free seat, same with crew. Tired to explain how that happens , but that's it. The case with Singapore shows human factor and or technical error. Miscommunication with controllers, wrong first reaction in the cabin, or smth happened there, possible issues with aircraft software. Of you see photo-Vlvideo, the carts are out, the food is everywhere: the crew was serving meal. When the meal is served? When pilot gives permit and approves safe corridor. Stop blaming ppl! You think injured guys in the toilets also had to stripe themselves to the toilet seat or?
