My Agoraphobia Symptoms and Diagnosis (I DIDN'T KNOW!)

  • I have Agoraphobia! Did I mistake the physical symptoms of my panic for IBS and consequently treat the wrong thing? My diagnosis is certainly a self-diagnosis but I believe it comes from an informed, reflective place and I feel like I might be correct.
What is exciting is that I am more empowered to distinguish between physical and psychological challenges that I face and work to relieve the symptoms and triggers I can control. That's a great place to be!
Assuming this Agoraphobia diagnosis is correct it manifests as an intense fear of embarrassing myself in public and manifests when I am in situations I can't control e.g. a queue, public transport, a busy meeting room.
I have always assumed these situations heightened my IBS symptoms, where actually my body was in fear mode; triggering fight or flight responses that resulted (for me) in the need to go to the toilet, increased heart rate, sweating, cloudy vision and lack of focus. I feel in a powerful place right now regarding some of the issues I face and I am interested in other peoples opinions of my diagnosis and what steps I could take.

Im dealing with this right now too I have terrible stomach problems when I leave my house. Im fine at home for the most part so that causes me to never want to leave. I couldn't even go into the grocery store the other day bc they had no bathroom and it caused me to panic. I have my first ever psychiatrist appointment this Wednesday and I really hope they can help me. I think my stomach problems has caused me to have agoraphobia. Hope you've figured out if you do too.

I just started sertraline, 25mg. Tonight will be my 6th dose. My GP put me on it for anxiety but I initially went to see him for stomach issues. This vid gives some perspective and I thank you for putting out the content. I am curious /concerned about how the medication will affect me 👍

I’m literally terrified of going out of my house because of my ibs... even when people come round I get this horrible panicky feeing because of how embarrassed I feel. Do you have any advice? X

I feel your pain! I years like that so I would start by saying you can change. A few things really helped me - 1) There is a Hypnosis programme called IBS 100 or similar by Michael Mahoney. I bought this as a desperate sceptic and honestly it was the first life changing moment for me.
      2) Get CBT therapy. You can usually get this for for free with NHS but not sure if you are in UK. If the waiting list is long I’d consider paying - I use TalkSpace online therapy and they offer CBT. I did a video review of it and it’s well worth it. I attended face to face CBT sessions and they worked on my triggers and over active fight or flight response.
      3) Read/Learn as much as possible about digestion and how your bowels work. I neglected this for a long time and then accidentally started understanding more and more. Inevitably this allowed me to distinguish between normal bodily responses and overactivity.
      4) Diet - I am sure you’ve done this but play with your diet and drink plenty of water. I haven’t cut much out of my diet as the hypno and cbt therapy did wonders but it’s good to play. Perhaps try Keto? Carbs are killer for me so this would be the most logical route.
