Thumbs up if some of these assists credited are BS!
BBALLBREAKDOWN yes
Somebody has been drinking haterade
In all my years watching basketball i thought the maximum amount of dribbles leading to an assist is 2
Hard part for fans is that we don't see the assist counter tick upwards *during* play. Fans can't develop any indignation over something they can't see, and the percentage of people who look up stats online--and the further subset who link individual assists to plays and play quality--is miniscule.
@BBALBREAKDOWN just a quick thought: you could also mention the European way.
Player passes the ball and gets the assist if his teammate scores and:
-is in the paint when got the ball scores without leaving it
-scores without a dribble
-no defender is facing him when he recieves the ball.
These are the main rules but there also are some minor ones. The rules are very exact and not a failure such those from the NBA are.
Great video Coach. "Assist" is certainly a difficult stat to consistently measure using a human observer... if I'm not mistaken, soccer suffers from the same issue. I have a couple thoughts on how (potentially) this problem could be improved:
1) Provide the stat-counters with more extensive training (showing them film examples of different kinds of passes) on what constitutes as an assist and what doesn't, so that at the very least it is uniform across players.
2) Break down the "assist" stat into more specific assist-type stats, much like how scoring is broken down into 3P, FT, Post up, Pull-up, etc. This is already being done to an extent (this video is showing examples of potential assist categories), so perhaps the job here is to count these stats, popularize them, and showcase their importance.
3) This is thinking quite far into the future, and perhaps a little bit too imaginative on my part, but I do believe that in the next couple decades the NBA's player tracking technology will be so advanced that they will be able to use some sort of algorithm (perhaps taking into account ball movement pattern, time between pass and shot, type of shot, length of pass, etc) to computationally judge what is deemed and assist and what isn't. It would never be a "perfect" algorithm and it would need constant tweaking, but it certainly seems a lot better than asking people to count them.
MDJ I asked you about the video on twitter. Thanks for your take
+MDJ love your videos man. I always thought it was 3 secs after the pass. Another solution could be universal scorekeepers which would eliminate bias but that would be tedious for them to travel back and forth
"apparently the refs are looking at this on the replay to tell if this was an assist or not"
I THINK NOT
MDJ Soccer has this a lot worse because of the size and length of the pitch, they don’t attach a distance onto it. A player could pass the ball to another in their own half, that player could go on a run and score, and the other player would be credited with an assist although they did not create that opportunity and was not involved in the chance.
I think you should do a video on selfish assists. Most casual fans don't understand what a selfish assist is. The Rockets are 30th in the league in total passes, but fans believe they are a good passing team because Harden and Paul are top 10 players in assists. They are just ball dominant and pass to create assists rather than initiate the offense. LeBron James and Russel Westbrook get the same selfish assists. LeBron and CP3 get credit for being good passers and team first players while Westbrook is labeled as a ball hog although they all get very similar assists and rarely participate in the team offense after giving up the ball. Please do a video on selfish assists.
When Ty Lue was talking about agendas, he was talking about LeBron holding on to the ball to create assist opportunities over just running the offense. Fans need to learn the truth.
What are the assist numbers of opposing teams playing the hawks, bulls, nuggets, and Celtics? Do they also see a higher assist total per game when playing in one these towns? Not that it should matter, I’m just genially curious.
xPDoG i think it's because those teams give their players assists when it's not (like shown in the video)
I think the point is whether the same statistician is counting it the same for both teams in that game. Not that it's fair even still, since liberal stat-counting would benefit the home team 41 times a year and the visiting team once or twice a year.
The video doesn't really point out much, there can be multiple factors to why some teams get higher numbers of assists at home, just because of that number is there it doesn't prove that they are faking the stats in their favor, Denver wins most of their games at home, they play much better at home, that is probably the main reason why they also get more assists, Denver is also on a high altitude compared to other cities so away teams can struggle there and get tired faster...there are many factors but the video doesn't even try to mention any.
NBA "fans" on Twitter still believe this myth that averaging a certain amount of assists absolves players from being considered selfish or unselfish.
It's ludicrous.
Kevin Surur Westbrook is the ultimate example of its bullshit
Kevin Surur thank you!
If you want to know if a player is a ball hog, look at his shot attempts per game
Rondo without shooting much is still a first ballot ball hog hall of famer.
Dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble dribble pass to open man
repeat.
Brqinstorm Rondo is one of the greatest passers in NBA history. You have no idea wtf you are talking about
Great video coach! I've been a statistician in Finland for six years and they changed the definition of assist a few years ago in the whole Europe I believe. Now the rules are simple and there's not much room for interpretation.
This is how you get an assist in Europe (one ore more of these has to apply in the pass)
-A pass is received inside the paint and the receiver scores without leaving the paint. There the offensive player has 3 seconds to score, because of the 3s rule. All of the alley-oops, dump-offs under the basket and some post-ups fall into this category
-A pass is received by a player and he scores without dribbling. Again, this is a very simple rule and the assist is doesnt depend on the judgement of the statistician.
-A pass is received by a player who doesn't have a defender facing him or directly in front of him and then scores. These are the types of assists that happen during fast breaks and kickouts that lead to one dribble jumpers or such.
-A pass is received by a player who takes a shot that would have resulted in an assist had it gone in, but the player is fouled in the act of shooting and is awarded free throws. If he makes one of the free throws, the passer is credited with an assist as it probably would've been an assist if there wasn't a foul.
Now you can see that assist are counted a little bit more strictly in Europe than in the NBA, but that's how it has always been. Player getting double digit assists in Europe is a lot more rarer than it happening in the NBA (which is also the result of how the game is played, not only statkeeping). For example, this: 2:48 wouldn't be an assist in Europe.
I think we're forgetting something a bit more important. How did Duncan not get credited with a quadruple double?
nblade66 What happened!

Osiel Rodriguez ii
because of bs statisticians
The European way of counting assists is WAY better. A player gets an assist if he passes to a player who than scores if:
-he is in the paint when he got the ball and scores without going out of it
-scores without a dribble
-no defender is facing him (is in front of his in defensive stance or/and contesting the shot) at the time.
Gregor Globevnik Wait so if you pass to someone and they go to the basket for a layup, it's not an assist?
The Hulk it is an assits, because nobody was facing him.
But if a player gets the ball and then plays 1 on 1 it is not an assist as it shouldn't be.
So passes to open jumpshots outside the paint are not assists?
That’s interesting
Gregor Globevnik that’s dumb
"Just cause you got good stats don't mean you're good." -Charles Barkley.
I can now sense when the ad is coming too skip lol

Its still caught me off a little bit, well I don't really mind the ads, its not like its superlong or boring
I work at game operations for the NBA. And my job is to verify that stats are inputted correctly. Part of my job is also to judge if certain assist are valid. And within our group we all basically have come to agreement that a player is generally given two dribbles until it it’s no longer an assist. However if a player receives the ball and immediately goes towards the basket and is generally quicker with their dribbles then that could be considered an assist. They have been please wear a very quick point guard has been able to take three dribbles and score but because of the shorter distance, an assist is given. But ultimately the actual stat inputters get final say. But if there is a questionable play, it will be reviewed post-game and a final decision will be made.
Russ is a professional stat padder
ZayLOGICAL Haters gonna hate
Agree, Steven adams should be averaging 10+ Rebs easily but Russ won't let him
Benjamin Franklin Harden better
The whole Cavs offense revolves around him so his numbers are going to pad themselves regardless.
More than JeBron?
I think i viable solution would be for the NBA to hire and train statisticians to review games the next day and determine the correct amount of assists. As for tightening the rules, i feel as if something like putting a number of dribbles/moves restriction on an assist and a restriction of the amount of ground covered before the basket was made and the amount of time before a basket was made would really clean up these assist discrepancies. Just my thoughts.
Big Stall Great idea and solution
Big Stall that would ruin the game
Hennything is possible How would that ruin the game? The statistician doesn't affect anything that happens on the court, this would merely clean up what is supposed to be counted and for what exactly.
Puck might conflict with refs, what if hypothetically there was a goaltending that wasn't called in a close controversial game? The statistician could potentially change the outcome of that game an entire day later. I know to some people that sounds like a good thing, but let's be real, nobody wants to find out they lost a game they thought they won 24 hours later.
ghost3337 No, the ruling on the floor is what it is. All the statistician would be doing is more accurately determining what is or isn't an assist. They aren't changing results
This definitely is some very relevant content. Comparing the (assists/FG)% indicator at home and on the road is clever and brings lots of value to your analysis. Are you some sort of an NBA engineer?
This has been a pet peeve of mine forever, so many assists are basically just giving a guy the ball so the scorer can do all the work
The rule should not count the assist if the player receiving the ball takes more than two dribbles or takes longer than 2 in-game seconds to score the basket
Ethan D. No cuz then everyone on the all time assist leaderboard got to pad their assist stats with those rules.....
Exceptions being defense clearing passes in transition and hand-off to cutters by screeners. Assists should only count when the pass was critical to the score, so anything that anything that gives the scorer a clear shot with out contesting defense.
Ive always said more than two dribbles isn't an assist. And even with that if the two dribbles have some sort of crossover or hesitation move between them it becomes clouded if that is an assist or not. Great vid Coach I didn't get the nickname Dr. Dish in high school for no reason so this was right up my alley.
Yes!! And thx
When I played and referee'd our blanket rule was a 2 dribble maximum after the pass to be credited with an assist.
That would help
I was thinking that's what the rule should be too. 2 dribbles or less.
Rob Attz I thought it was 1 dribble max
Alex Cuellar. U thought hella wrong😂😂😂
Trayvon Etienne shit in that case I be getting like 8 assist a game when we play pick up ball lmao
Now I finally understand why ive been getting assists from regular inbounds in 2k
JadeLogic are u blind? Just askin
Obvious
Hey coach I thought you would maybe talk about how "ball hogging" for assists like Westbrook, CP3 or LeBron James(sometimes) may be worse for the team's offense than moving the ball faster.
I’m working on something related to this
caspuchiha Lebron always ball hogs for assists lol
BBALLBREAKDOWN nice! I'm looking forward to this and your other work. Keep it up Coach!
caspuchiha nice suggestion
BBALLBREAKDOWN the best passing teams are the spurs and warriors because the assists aren't concentrated into a single player, stopping the game for others to stand around. That's bad passing.
I feel an assist can only be counted by a maximum of 2 dribbles in a half court set and in transition a maximum of 3 dribbles to count as an assist
Interesting, makes you wonder how much you can actually trust that statistic.
WTF is "True Assist"?
Can we PLEASE get a video that explains GOOD NBA DEFENSE? I just don't understand NBA defense.
If you stop the guy from scoring it's good defense, simple as that...
ethan24 but doesn't coach nick often say "good defense, better offense", saying that the defender played good defense, but then the player still made the shot. so i guess you can't just say that it was good defense when the shot was missed
ethan24 It's not that simple. There's a reason for the phrase, "good defense, better offense."
A guy can defend a play perfectly but the offensive player can still score. The opposite applies as well; a defensive player can miss his assignment, but the offensive player bricks an open shot. Analyzing defense is a very troublesome thing to do, which requires knowledge on a deeper level combined with statistics. That's why no defensive statistic is used as an "all in one" stat.
Ooohhhhh
What about Rebounds? Should/do players get multiple rebounds if they tip the ball multiple times against the bord/Ring during the rebounding situation?
Appreciate this video, Coach. This must've taken a while to make but very insightful.
Thanks! And yes!!
I think if someone has to do a stepback it shouldn't be considered an assist.
Jesus Shuttlesworth If they have to do a stepback then they have to do a move to make their own shot instead of the pass directly leading to a basket.
Jesus Shuttlesworth You can have whatever opinion you want about what counts as an assist but I'm not gonna sit here and argue about it with some guy in a RUclips comments section.
By that logic a dunk shouldn't be considered an assist either.
About time someone covered this. My father in law is a stat official, he tells me all the time how players get assist when it’s undeserving. He mentioned that lonzo and Lebron get so many undeserving assist
That's funny - just 3 days ago I had to counts assists and rebounds in a game and started wondering what is exactly an assist and what is not. And now here's the video about them!! Perfect timing bballbreakdown!!
Excellent video, Coach. I always wondered what constituted an assist, and it seems the answer is way more subjective than I thought.
Having a lot of assists doesn't make you a good passer
1400 Curry That's true, especially when one player has a lot of missed assist opportunities
And a good playmaker
Facts
Cough* Westbrook cough*.....
11:35 I think we can all excuse that one since it Iead to such an awesome step back bank shot
I agree 100% with you Coach Nick about your concept of assist
Hey Coach,
This issue is not exclusive to the NBA. Even FIBA has a very vague definition of an assist. I had attended a statisticians training session and was left scratching my head. It's just a way to inflate player numbers and hence such attractive stat lines are a common sight now
*IMO* I feel that after like 2 or 3 dribbles after catching the pass that's not an "assist" anymore...that's a player creating his own shot
The Vagabond i'd agree with 3 dribbles, since there were some examples of 2 dribbles on a fastbreak that were assists
Luciano Cabrera Well unless the NBA actually defines what an assist truly is (number of dribbles, seconds after the pass, etc.) we stuck with the vague description Coach pointed out
The Vagabond It should be 1 drible for jumpshot, 2 for layup, 3 for fastbreaks.
It's worse with rebounding. Westbrook last year, instead of defending his guy at the 3 pt line, was waiting for the rebound around the rim and a lot of times he gave up the open 3 or got in the way of the big man and caused a turnover. Just search Westbrook rebounds on youtube.
And he's not the only one. For me personally rebounds for guards mean nothing 90% of the time because they don't have to fight with someone for it as big men do.
StefanManUtd I agree but you've gotta admit that westbrook does grab some tough offensive rebounds
I mostly agree with you, but I think that's a bit too cynical. Although a lot of rebounds that guards get are easy rebounds, there are still some guards that do make important rebounds. Also, when the guard grabs the rebound, they can push the pace before the defense can get set, which can lead to easy scores. I think the more important thing, though, is that the guards are showing hustle and willingness to go for rebounds vs. sagging off on defense for the sake of stats.
Westbrook is a great rebounder of course. But when you give up an open 3 or cause the turnover just cause you want to stat pad, it's bad.
yh well having played basketball for about 10 years, you realize that guards rebounds do matter. as a big men you need those small guards to clean up around you, because your always facing the rim trying to get close . Dont underestimate it it makes a significant difference if the guards focus on rebounds or they dont.
That being said the stats padding is something entirely different, thats not a fault of the system, thats just a guy who wants a certain statline not really anything to be done about except coaching
I'm not saying it doesn't matter, I'm saying grabbing the ball with no one around you is not hard and shouldn't be glorified the way it is.
Once again, great job, coach! I would like to hear your take on the traveling rule. It seems like that one has been interpreted in many ways too.
I mean, this has kind of been an open secret for the Celtics at least. Even the Celtics broadcasters acknowledged that their statisticians are generally giving out assists more freely (I believe they said this specifically regarding Rondo before his injury) to either team.
A team in the Boston market getting a massive advantage at Home???
SHOCKING!!! look no further than the Patriots and Celtics just about every fuckin game (Idk about the Bruins/Redsox)
There was this one great article of a scorekeeper for the Vancouver Grizzlies who credited Nick Van Exel 23 assists because he was a Lakers fan. He got praise from his boss since the game got nationwide media attention because of that. Even though the NBA police this better these days it’s obvious home cooking is still a significant issue in stat keeping.
Here’s the article: deadspin.com/5336974/an-assist-for-nick-van-exel-how-an-nba-scorekeeper-cooked-the-books
I AGREEEEEE, i'm glad someone finally made a video on this
Shout to you and Legend of Winning for blessing us with real basketball knowledge
Coach Nick production this season is on the MVP level!
before i watch the video im guessing what add coach nick is going to sneak in there... ME Undies?
Coach can make a vid on moving screens? Ik they always been part of the game but GSW takes it to a whole other level
Robe Melo lol he’s a Warriors fan, so he won’t
Robe Melo no they don't! every team does it all the time.. you just think gs does it more than other because of the attention they get
He made one last year, search it on his channel
He has already made it a while ago.
He has already made it. He showed that every team did (and still does) that just like Warriors. Go ahead and watch the video.
Wau! Absolutely head scratching stuff about the different assist judgements! Great job putting that breakdown together coach!!
That was in-depth Coach! Thanks for calling out the NBA.
Awesome video. I had no idea some were counting stuff beyond one dribble as an assist. Takes away from what true play making is. I would be open to a nice screen that leads to catch a shoot or one dribble as an assist for the big and passer, or a hockey assist counting.
Do a video of why the cavs aren't working right now
Daniel Rios DE-FENCE, DE-FENCE
New players, injuries, old af, no defense whatsoever, Assistant Coach Lue don't know what he doing, everybody not named Lebron throwing more bricks than the Mexican cartel, and they know the Warriors bringing out the brooms in the finals
The Vagabond 😂😂😂 dying rn
They were tanking on purpose to get trades that easy
Just add a 2 second rule. Its only an assist if the shot happened within 2 seconds of the pass being caught
Jigolopuff That's too loose
Jigolopuff that’s how it works on 2k
Good idea pointing this phenomenon out. In my opinion it is a part of a bigger picture. The more advanced NBA analytics gets - the more incentives to twist it (for whatever reason, usually, making something that isn't good in essence look better than it truly is). Focusing not on a product's quality, but on the power of marketing campaign. As a result, more misleading info for decision-makers. There's a reason why Spurs are looking for character guys for their roster - can't fool presence/absence of character with stats. "The more things change, the more they stay the same. And human nature never changes" (quoting J. Wooden on this one). Search for a character (combined with elite athleticism, fundamentals and high game IQ) - you'd be surprised on how many players with those attributes are left unnoticed and never get developed until they are way passed their prime. Building teams based on this type of product will get you titles.
David West is such an underrated passer. He has been one of my favourite role players
had the same thing on my mind a few weeks before this video.. good that u made this..
possible solution: can only be counted as assist if the receiver/scorer just made 1 or no dribble after the pass.. ie alley op, transition/fastbreak
Thanks and YES
@BBALLBREAKDOWN i have a message for u on FB.. u saw it already but no reply yet.. re: Reggie Miller rule, how its applied/ called on FIBA
6:27 "Milos Teodosic is a Jedi Master at this" love the SW pun
I've always understood that if a player doesn't take more than two steps before scoring after a pass, it is considered an assist. That was what was relayed to me when I was learning the game in elementary.
*Edit:* Having now watched the entirety of your video. I think a 2 dribble, 2 step, 2 second maximum on pass recipient activity before basket should be included in the definition of what qualifies as an assist.
Make Humanity Great Again me 2 but i guess there are exceptions
I like where you’re going
@1:57 Crawford is nasty that double spin was insane
00:08 ngl I thought that was a sneaky coach Nick promo
GREAT STUFF!
I would be very curious to see how true stats were last season in OKC...not because I am a Wes hater, but since stats decided the MVP vote...
Gortat should indeed give a piece of his salary to John Wall and Bradley Beal :D
And so should John Wall and Bradley Beal do, because Marcin is setting best screens in the NBA :P
other way around
Always knew Gortat was a great screener but ya, hes 2nd in the nba in screen assists stats.nba.com/players/hustle/?sort=SCREEN_ASSISTS&dir=1
They're paying him BS, leave the man alone ;)
This video is waaaaay better than LOWs video. Good job Coach
My one thought that dissents from this opinion of an undeserved/padded assist stat is relevant to the Celtics. The post player passes out to an open 3 shooter who fakes when the defender chases him off the line. He then makes a deep, but open jumper. I know this was not explicitly covered on the video, but it seemed like it might go against coaches definition. This video is intriguing and provoking for sure--amazing research!
It's definitely a hard stat to measure. I think that if a player still needs to create his own space and shot after the pass it shouldn't count as an assist(actually alot like how assists work in the 2K games). The pass to an open shooter is a tough cookie. I mean there's the hand-off to a quick trigger, there's the shooter who gets three screens to get open to receive a simple dime from the top and then there's the cross-court to an open man just waiting in the corner. I don't think we can distinguish between these assist because the pass leads to a score in the blink of an eye, much the same as the pass to an open lay-up.
Important video, and well-articulated.
Nice one, Coach Nick. Great insight.
👍👍🏀🏀💪💪
Very Astute observation. Although you were thorough in your analysis and presentation for the subjectivity of statistic, I was disappointed that you did not take the empirical data one step further with a simple test that would allow the statement, "The difference (discrepancy) of home assists to road assists (falls within/does not fall within) the expected range of results that can be attributed to random variation." It is a powerful statement to say there is a 95% chance that the difference cannot be attributed to random variation.
Hey coach, has this been done in the 90s/80s/ 70s as well?
If you need to dribble or pump fake or pause then its not an assist.... Assists are suppose to be a pass so good leads DIRECTLY to a score. Todays NBA is just stat padding boasting triple doubles and use it to say they are better than the old legends LMAO
welll you know assists were always counted that way since statistics were recorded so todays numbers are just the samew as assist numers in the past
The assists stats we get are for the fans and media. Teams surely have their own statisticians who analyze assists in many different ways. i.e Assists with no dribble, assists with 1 dribble max, etc.
I could have sworn the rule was "if the shooter makes the shot after only 1 dribble, the passer gets an assist." If that were the rule most of the assists you approved of would have counted, and all of the ones you didn't approve of would not have counted, except the one low-post shot.
I feel like Magic got a lot of assists just passing into Kareem as did Stockton just throwing into Malone. It's still debatable because you did see a drop off when someone else did a similar set up.
That's interesting that you identified some home cooking for some teams. I wonder if you will cause some changes in having the guys watching the games in NY dole out the assists on a rotation basis
Make a video for implementing a good defensive set
Great points coach, this is why everybody in this era has inflated assists numbers
Punit Modi YA. Bunch of BUMS this gen
you know assists have been couinted that way in any eraq everybody whos stats have ever been recorded in the nba has then inflated assist numbers
Just have a TWO dribble rule after the catch. Easy to implement and fair rule in my opinion.
Great breakdown Coach
I think an assist is when the pass is made to a player that has little to no defense for the most part. Thats why its looked at like a "teamwork" stat
Would love to see if the away team benefited as well at these same places - I highly doubt it due to home court advantage, but you could argue that if they're adding "BS Assists"for both teams its less of a problem and more just a weird inconsistency.
Back at it again
Generally nba assist is a fg made within 3 seconds after the catch. This has been happening even in the 80s - watch worthys triple double in game 7 of the 89 finals
Keep up the great vids man!
I am not a hater, but Lonzo is getting too much of those "imaginary assists". he had nothing to do with the made busket but he still gets credited.
I’ll check some of his assists out. Have u noticed whether it happens at home more than on the road?
BBALLBREAKDOWN Please get us some footage and in depth break down on if Lonzo is getting credited with assist he doesn't deserve that will be a interesting video
I haven't been paying attention to that, coach Nick.
This has been happening in LA for over a decade. KoME was the career beneficiary of the fake assists.
Truuuuu
I never thought about this concept before until I played My Player on 2k haha
Assists are overrated IMO. Look at rondo back at boston. Holds the ball for 18 seconds, passes to pierce, he shoots, boom there's an assist. I can get 8+ assists this way
Westbrook is better example. He dribles the ball whole time, so if anyone gets the opportunity to shoot it will be after Westbrook passes him the ball.
Thank goodness for David Thompson and his Wolf pack point guard
I think some "assists" are situational, some of plays you called out I agreed with but some seem pretty good to be called an assist based off the situation
great video coach!
DS17 made 15 Assists today but watch them after seeing this video!!
I really think all levels of basketball should adopt the hockey assist. The pass to the pass that leads to the basket. I think it would encourage more ball movement and less ball hog assists.
I see a lot of people advocating for x amount of dribbles to be how assists are determined, but as a big, when I reel in a rebound and my pass down the court clearly creates the basket for my teammate, I feel like I earned and assist
What if its a open fast break and then you passed it to recipient who's still in the center of the court and have a lot more steps to get to the basket does that still count as an assist or not?
Already know this video gunna be good
I think that if you pass it to someone and he holds it for more than 3 seconds and scores i dont think it should count. Also i think a pass to assist should count has an assist because your assisting(helping) with the basket. Comment if you agree.😀
"we owe it to the game to make this stat a more deserving one" - that's the truth right there!
it should be more like it is in football aka soccer. There is a certain time limit and penetration that only gives assists
maybe it’s not so much “home advantage” as it is “lenient stats guys”. Have you looked in to whether these games are leading to higher assists for away teams aswell?
I like when they give the assists at the end of the video. They are still finding a player in the right position to score. I think it should just be any pass before a score. Then there is no interpretation. Any other will have discrepancies.
Can u do a video on deflections cause it seems the one who pokes the ball loose to his team mate for the steal deserves credit for the steal also I deflect balls all the time and set up turn overs but get no credit for the deflection it's the most under rated stat in my book
@BBALLBREAKDOWN You should compare other teams assists percents when they are playing someplace else vs when they are playing at one of the outliers courts (ex; when the pistons play at the Celtics with the Celtics stat keepers do they also get more assists than they usually do?) We all know there is a certain amount of home court advantage in all sports, but in this specific case, i think that stat would show whether the stat keepers are being bias, or if they simply have a broader definition of an assist and are interpreting it fairly across all teams that they are keeping stats for
Yeah, a lot of those later ones I wouldn't have counted as assists. If the player receiving the pass, whether in the post or out by the 3-point line, then does several moves to score the basket, it shouldn't be an assist.
great video coach
Would you agree though, that if the above rules are met and the player is fouled in the act of shooting without making the basket and makes at least 1 FT that the passer should be credited with an assist?
i think assists should be based on whether the scoring player receiving the pass "resets" the flow of the play or not.
They do this same thing with Lonzo. Especially if he passes to a centre. The Center posts up and dribbles like 3-4 times and then scores. Lonzo still gets the assist
