  • Purchased at Tomahawk AOMCI meet in 2017 on Saturday for $10. Cleaned carburetor, replaced water pump impeller, and gear oil. Have not done ignition tune up yet. Running pretty well but still some room for improvement. Could use more cleaning up too, but overall a decent little motor.

    Thank you very much. I do enjoy watching the motors you have. It just seem when we went to grandpa’s house in Hayward Wi that it brings memories of struggling with the motors and the time my brother pull started a motor while I was facing him and got socked I. The face. I’m 66. Thanks again and as I said I do enjoy watching a running motor. Thanks !

      It is always nice to get the positive feedback that someone is enjoying the content on my channel. Yes, some of these old motors are more difficult to start than others and they do typically require more maintenance then the more modern motors. The points ignition is much more affected by the elements since it is all mechanical and exposed to open atmosphere. They require periodic cleaning and adjustment where electronic ignition is solid state and sealed. They still fail, but as long as they are working there is no adjustment or cleaning required to have optimal ignition. Many new motors are fuel injected too, which eliminates many of the issues that go along with the elemental issues of carburetors. If they are kept in good tune, though, most of them start and run beautifully. Maintenance has become something that a great number of people just don't expect to have to do these days. By the mid 1980s it seems like the operator-performed maintenance was being designed out of everything. After a couple of decades, all but the most basic maintenance had been made either unnecessary or almost impossible for the operator to perform. In some ways that's good. I like that my car will just start and run when I get in and go. It has a tune up interval of 100k+ miles instead of 15k. On the other hand, Joe Average can no longer even perform the work to make his car run its best anymore. More often than not a diagnostic computer is needed to even find out what is wrong with it and it takes a host of special tools and vehicle specific manuals to donthe work once it is diagnosed. I like these old outboards because I cane see and feel everything work. If something goes wrong, it is nearly always something I can fix myself and many times with very minimal tools. If someone is not into doing their own work and maintenance, none of that matters and the edge clearly goes to modern technology. Thanks again for watching!

    Firestone??? Wow! I seen a Oliver outboard as in Oliver tractors at sport and travel show this past year, I never knew they made a outboard.

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  4 года назад +2

      This Firestone was built by Scott-Atwater and sold in Firestone tire stores and service centers. Oliver bought out Chris-Craft's outboard division when Keikheafer Mercury sued them for patent infringement. Oliver changed them a little here and there and built outboards for a few years under their name before dropping production of outboard motors. They are very good motors, but parts are getting hard to find. Thanks for watching!

      Thank you. I like these old motors. Most of these I would prefer over a modern motor of today. I do love this boat. Yes, it is an Alumacraft FD. This one is a 1971 and the Alumacraft literature for a year range including 1971 shows the FD rated for 40hp. I have run everything from 0.75hp to 40hp on this boat. I ran it all summer with a 1963 Evinrude 40hp Big Twin on it. It is a wonderful little rig. I could do a video on this boat sometime. Maybe in the spring when I get it back out I will do that. • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  4 года назад

      Congratulations on your new boat and motors. The Scott is a nice powerful motor for a 5hp. If the coil is good it will probably run. When you disassemble the carburetor for a cleaning and rebuild, be sure to remove the high speed needle before removing the float bowl. Otherwise the end of the needle will get bent and the seat damaged. This is typical of these Tillotson carburetors. You will likely have to make a new bowl gasket yourself so try to preserve as much as possible of the original to use as a pattern for the new one. Not necessary, but does make it easier. Thanks for watching!

    Was searching for info on what I believe is a 5 hp Firestone and found this video. The one I have has a bad gas tank someone cut the top out of and also has bad water pump impeller. Would love to find someone who could use it for parts or someone who had an impeller and fuel tank to get it working again.

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  3 года назад

      The 5hp Scott Atwater of the same vintage will fit and could be painted and decals applied if you were planning to do a cosmetic restoration on it. The Firestones are around, but not quite as common. As for the water pump impeller, there is a AOMCI club member that will recast a new impeller on your old hub for a decent price considering they are NLA. There may be a commercially available impeller that could be modified to fit as well. I'm bot sure which one it would be, but it may be worth asking the question on the Ask A Member forum on AOMCI.ORG. Very helpful bunch over there. I have been a dues paying club member for several years and plan to keep it up. It is a great club. The Ask A Member forum is free and open to the public so all you need to do is register on the site. Thanks for watching!

      These Scotts still had the sliding collar reverse lock in 1955, I believe. I wonder how it got stuck in reverse? Something muat have been missing or bent / jammed if it had the sliding collar and wanted to climb up in reverse. These are pretty strong 5hp motors. Thanks for watching!

      Ed Hein Thanks Ed! With the impeller I have 35 bucks into it now. For that money I'm really happy with it. It may improve a bit more if I go through the magneto too. It seems to have strong spark, but I have done nothing with the ignition yet.

      @@peterb7268 They are unnecessarily complicated, but they are a very cool part of Evinrude and outboard history. They are very smooth runners but yes, a bit tricky to work on. The spark plug wires run right by and underneath the carburetor too, which is a nice feature to make fires more likely. I like mine, but it would not be my choice for my main power on a boat. Mine is reserved for the novelty and an occasional run.
