In an ESPN documentary it was confirmed he didn't drink but liked the night life. He said he played fútbol because he loved playing the sport, he didn't want it to be a job because then it'll take the fun out of the game. He was as humble as can be, would literally give the shirt off his back and shoes away to the needy in Cadiz if he saw someone in need. He is a legend in El Salvador and the people of Cadiz still love and talk about him. Possibly one of the top 5 greatest talents to ever play the game.
As a native salvadorian I know he drank like a true salvadoren, u can't party all night with out alcohol and maybe some sniff 👃👁👁👀🕺💃🕺💃

As a salvadoreño myself I can attest that we live to party and it gets in our way to succes but we still make it. we understand that life needs happyness more than anything is just the environment we grew up in, it should definitely inspire us to seek more.. not to say he was not someone who changed things

First world cup appearance for El Salvador's in 1982? What about Mexico 1970? El Salvador qualified for that event and was placed in groupe 1, with Mexico, Soviet Union and Belgium (and lost all three games, btw)
He didn’t want it to be a job, he also wanted to play where he felt “good and comfortable” and understood the language. Something not mentioned here is that he also left Paris Saint Germaine hanging, contract in hand, he just didn’t go. He was so simple and un attracted to money and fame. What we see is probably glimpse of what this phenom could’ve been if someone had mentored him. He settled for a small warm city, Cadiz, why? Simply because as he said, he just felt comfortable there.

I got to play football against El Magico one of the times I went to visit my family in El Salvador. This was back in 2003 or 2004. Our little team of friends were going to play against him and his friends or family. We played in La Chapupo Rodriguez (a football place with multiple small pitches) But when we got there he had already played a game so he was really tired. So we played him for about 20 minutes and then he decided to referee the game instead lol It was awesome. Me and my cousins were about 18 or 19 and there we were casually playing with him. It was fun.

Used to sell charamuscas as a kid and frescos with my mom back in the early 80s. First we would stop at the cancha (pitch) "El Chirajo" right at the corner (forgot the name of the streets), on one side was the cuartel and the other was a baseball field. Then we would make our way to the Chapupo, where some ladies that were selling wanted to fight my mom. Then we would make our way to the Stadium, walking.

I have never heard of this fellow. Had I the ear of hid manager, my advice would have been quite simple. Put some ahem "bodyguards" on his detail. They would make sure no-one bothered him, go with him everywhere, drive him to where he needed to be i.e. training and playing matches with a short, supervised trip to the bar after a match and the odd female visitor to his home every few days. I know how to deal with footballers like this, oh yes.

no not really. Top 10 dribbler at some point in his life but nowhere near "best player in the world" let alone comparable to some one like Madarona. The Comparison is interesting because neither played in top teams, but Maradona could make a less than average team be great and led them to titles. This guy could dribble, but did not carry the same "weight" when it came to making a difference in key moments
El salvador was far worse than "average" and Gonzalez boosted them to 2 world cups. at that point you have to give him a top spot in the sport. not only that but maradona even said Gonzalez is just as good if not better

I believe if he would’ve applied himself to the game and became the legend Maradona became, fútbol in El Salvador would’ve been better and more kids would’ve been inspired to be like him. Sometimes it takes that one player to inspire and produce other talented players. Nonetheless he was amazing just wished he would’ve done more.
We all do. He had the potential to be one of the absolute greatest to ever play. However I’m not sure how well El Salvador would do Internationally. I believe Magico would win a CONCACAF Championship. But I don’t think he would win a World Cup. I believe Magico would inspire future generations like you said, and maybe one day create a elite level squad that could win a World Title but it’s defiantly a challenge.
