When did American fighter pilots start calling the F-16 Fighting Falcon the F-16 Viper? The story I’ve heard is that “Falcon” didn’t sound cool anymore so the pilots began informally calling it the “Viper” since that sounds more cool. Then the name eventually stuck. I really don’t see “Viper” as an improvement over “Falcon.” The falcon is the symbol of the United States, Air Force Academy, and has some patriotic significance.

Its official name is STILL the F-16 Fighting Falcon, even up to now. Although Lockheed Martin does call the very latest model the F-16V as a VERY obvious nod to the unofficial nickname. It's kind if like the F/A-18. The A-D variants were the Hornet with the E and F being the Super Hornet, but no one in the service calls them by that. The Super Hornet is either the Rhino or the Super Bug in those circles.

The American bird is a bald eagle. Quite different than a falcon.

UFC, List, DTLK, press 1 to turn off and again to turn back on.
