I completely agree with you. It's like the narrator realised that first love is something blind, whimsical and is built more on fantasies and thrill of something new. But love, in reality is much much more difficult and isn't just about emotions and a lot more. And the narrator's first love could never attain that height as it was childish, and was more of an adventure than something stable. So breaking it off, and falling out is better.
