  • The Central Government War Headquarters (CGWHQ) is a 35-acre complex built 120 feet (37 m) underground as the United Kingdom's emergency government war headquarters - the hub of the country's alternative seat of power outside London during a nuclear war or conflict with the Soviet Union. It is located in Corsham, Wiltshire, in a former Bath stone quarry known as Spring Quarry, under the present-day MoD Corsham In 1940, during the Second World War, the site was acquired by the Minister of Aircraft Production and used as an underground engine factory
The complex was known variously as "Stockwell", "Subterfuge", "Burlington", "Turnstile", "Chanticleer", "Peripheral", and "Site 3". It was also nicknamed "Hawthorn" by journalist Duncan Campbell, who first revealed its existence in his 1982 book War Plan UK. It was also mentioned by Peter Laurie in his 1979 revised edition of Beneath the City Streets.
In 2013, parts of CGWHQ were made scheduled monuments relating to Cold War history. Additionally a number of underground murals painted by Olga Lehmann are Grade II* listed. East to west, they are:
    Tunnel Quarry
    Slope Shaft (Emergency Exit)
Kitchen, Canteen, Laundry, Dining and Washroom areas
Prime Minister's Rooms and Operations Rooms
    Radio Studio
    GPO Telephone Exchange
Lamson Terminus Room and associated Fan Room
    Quarry Operations Centre murals
    Thanks For Watching

its not a slice room, no slicing, but a sluice room, for disposing of human waste. the "scrolls like typewriters"are teletype/teleprinter machines used for sending and receiving written/typed communications via telephone lines, kinda like texting but even before fax machines were used, telephone exchange has /had a checkerboard floor and is by hospital

This is epic and puts the ole area 51 bollox to bed. Huge area all but stripped out down to last few bits. I'm guessing the limestone seeps water so wouldn't have been radiation proof. Abandoned for good reason and there updated bunkers like morwenstow, are unbelievable builds!

Not at all, none of the main bits were touch, Burlington is split into 3 different sections for a reason! This is all left abandoned for a reason! Maybe the bunkers gone deeper down another level underground who knows! The Back section of ark data base which is certain people only access, that sinks down 6 levels in the underground! 800million doesn't cost what they have above ground so think about it!

Only reason I knew about it was a friend on mine worked Waterloo air management and they did air handling for it. I parked couple miles away and walked along coastal path a filmed a little bit of it there sum footage on my you tube. I used to install EMC2 mainframes and telecommunication cabinets here from 98 to 2001 the mainframes look like 6ft wardrobes very heavy and fully kitted out were worth 4 million pounds each. They would have been used for data storage for various government entities, insurance companies and banking institutions to keep our stored data safe in case of a nuclear strike, the telecommunication cabinets were part of a strategy to maintain and keep communications going after ww3, we use to deliver and install around the country at many places of deep subterranean installations, all this was early days of the internet boom. These days these places will be filled with Microsoft AWS dell IBM META (and many more) mainframes to run the much bigger internet services we have today
