The Journey to the West is really famous in Vietnam, and the music at the beginning of the video is really familiar with Vietnamese. Many Vietnamese television media such as VTV, HTV shot the Journey to the West that Lu Xiaolingdong played as Sun Wukong. Well, the opening and ending songs of the series are still famous in Vietnam now, even the ending song has Vietnamese version.
Great relics like the Buddha´s, guarding the land for centuries only to be destroyed in my lifetime. What a shame. But thank you for the story of the real journey to the west! It´s a interesting piece of history in itself and the root of great fantasy.
In Indonesia, Journey to the west is very popular classic that we always called "Sun go kong", it was big hit back then, also the opening was straight up Rapping
Oh my gosh, I can't believe you mentioned "Monkey Magic," that Japanese version of Journey to The West! 🤣 I only discovered it a few months ago on RUclips can't believe the Monk in there is played by a female and the whole production was Japanese. The dub in English is also hilarious!
Journey to the West (Tây du ký in Vietnamese), The Romance of Three Kingdoms (Tam quốc diễn nghĩa 1996), Justice Pao, Records of Kangxi's Travel Incognito, Liu Yong the Grand Chancellor (宰相劉羅鍋, Zǎixiàng liúluóguo, Tể tướng Lưu gù), The Bronze Teeth (Bản lĩnh Kỷ Hiểu Lam) were famous in Vietnamese, and they are still in the memories of many Vietnamese people, especially young people. Vietnamese people prefer the Journey to the West (1986) than other versions, and its theme songs are more famous than the theme songs of other ones.
That King he promised to spend 3 years with but never did, perhaps that was the inspiration for the turtle that provided Xuanzang and his pilgrims passage across a river, requesting that when they reach their destination to ask the buddha of his fate. Later in the story, when the pilgrims are returning home, they come across the turtle again and he provides them a ride like before. However, when the turtle inquires about the favor, Xuazang completely forgot to ask about his faith and the turtle was so miffed about this that he tossed them out of his back and into the river. Considering the turtle was just a one-bit character that never appeared afterward until the very end, the reader probably forgot about him too.

@@FOLIPE there was no India back then to dominate the Indian Ocean, It was a mosaic of warring kingdoms and states that only occasionaly were dominanted by a pan Indian Empire, and even then it rarely extented fully to the south. The Indian Ocean was a free for all that the Chinese exploited well until the Qing Dynasty.

The guy who wrote about Sun Wukong was clearly just making stuff up as the plot demanded. Sure was creative. Stop blaming India's problems on the British. They left over 50 years ago. Your government is in cahoots with food corporations. They took away the government-regulated farmers Auction so that farmers would be forced to sell at lower prices to big corporations.

Xuanzang's journey took 17 years because he stopped at different schools to learn the language. There is a network of Buddhist learning centres where he could study Buddhism and the language. He also travelled with an entourage. So he probably picked up a few translators on his journey too.
Xuanzang's charisma must have been extraordinary, to have charmed so many kings. I wonder how much of it is due to his physical appearance. In the novel I think he was described as being exceedingly handsome.
Eh, I only recognize the TVB one from 1995. Actually in Water Margin, alot of the Buddhist monk were viewed negatively, like they are being corrupt with being lewd, drinking booze and greedy. Still Flower Priest who was a "Faux" Monk end up being a real Buddhist monk after his death as he lived up to the ideals.
Like in the chapter where Shi Xiu kills the lecherous monk, who was pandering with the wife of his sworn brother Yang Xiong. I can also see connections with Lu zhishen and Ji gong; who both ate meat and drank wine, but showed virtue and benevolence when upholding justice.
I remember the Japanese Anime adaptation of this(Saiyuki:Reload) The journey focus on the titular characters and finding all the heavenly scrolls and prevent the awakening of the Bull Demon/Gyumaoh
What is the relationship between the Journey to the West and the Empresss Wu Zetian? She upgraded/restored the Wild Goose Temple in 704 AD. She was also a Buddhist. What was the relationship between this Empress and Confucianism, particularly Neo-Confucianism?

Hindus, Buddhists and Jainism are all part of Sanatan Dharma 🕉️. This division was created by Britishers.(in Japan they follow Shinto - Buddhism, which is not that far off from what ancient Indian were doing.)
Buddhism already introduced into Mainland China during West Han Dynasty era which is almost six to eight hundred years before the Tang Dynasty. When the Buddhism came, the traditional Chinese Taoism are having a great interest to study on it instead of seeing it as a foreign threat, and many of the Chinese scholar found the Buddhism thinking are quite match with the Chinese origin philosophy, later on it became the so called Buddha-Tao combination or Buddhism-Confucianism-Taoism Combination (佛道合一/三教合一) which also give a big influences to Japan Korea Vietnam etc until today. So Buddhism might origin from India but it gained it great development and expansion from China.

I love your work and uploads. There isn't enough people talking about these historical events. And I mean ancient china in general, but you do a great job.
Watching stories of such great historical travelers always makes me wonder how many such magnificent journeys never made it into historical pages from peoples across the entire world
Lot's of ❤️ to all Asian brothers and sisters from India 🇮🇳..... Shared Culture and History 💕
As someone from neighborhood of both India and China. Time to stop playing into the western geo political games. We have been here before. We were supposed to be recovering from those era.
love from nepal. to both India n China. plz dont fall victims to the colonalists.
I like Xuanzang's portrayal in the anime Saiyuki. Even though he used a gun he was still awesome.
plus shoot first, ask questions later policy with chain smoking habit, makes him 10x badass
@@ShawnChang6453 He was good at keeping Sun Wukong and the others in line too.
In Indonesia, Journey to the west is very popular classic that we always called "Sun go kong", it was big hit back then, also the opening was straight up Rapping
Played by Dicky Cheung? 🤩
@@Xaiff i think thats the name of the actor
As an American-born Yuet-speaking (Taishanese, to be exact) 90s kid, I familiar with the 1986 CCTV series theme and the 1996 & 1998 TVB series themes.
Same.
The classic song keep running in my head upon reading your post.
So lucky..Maybe he really was choosen by buddha for this divine journey.

New subscriber here. I’ve been kind of obsessing over Chinese history and culture lately and really enjoying your content. Keep up the great work!
Much loved series in the UK in the 70's.
The only version that I watched was 1996 Journey to the West featuring Dicky Cheung
What a tale! Ulysses, Herodotus travel and king Solomon's Treasure combined!
Thanks for the video! Brahmaputra river politics are engaging today, as the global warming era intensifies, Xuanzang is a water diplomat!
This video is a blessing to this platform
I heard that’s because the King died; he was defeated by the Tang Emperor
Dude I love your history lessons.

Is this a coincidence or what, i was just reading "Great Tang Record of Western Regions" yesterday 😄
It'd be great if yall did the interactions of medieval and ancient Africa with China and the Far East. We are well aware of trade connections stretching as far back as, at least, the Tang Dynasty. It'd be a neat, unexplored area of history to touch.
Yep!
That was before the rich and prosper India and Africa being colonized by the British that rob the country of everything and leaving them poor.
The guys also talk about Amazon crossover by introducing Wukong.
It would be interesting because I did some research on it.
After reading a lot about Monkey King abilities since Black Myth was introduced, I have notice that a lot of Marvel heroes have similar abilities as Monkey King, from flying on a cloud with a red cape to shape-shifting.
The thing is that when monkey king use his fiery eyes, he get slightly burn. It look more realistic, but when Cyclop from X-men use his fire beams, it could cut through building and vehicle without burning out his eye balls. Now I know that sounds so bs and unrealistic lol.
Speaking of mutants. It's basically other word for demons. Wukong and his companions was demonic that helped human to fight other demons.
Then we have the Wukong ride, the flying cicada, a cloud that pretty much function as his personal jet vs Green Goblin in Spiderman, Silver Surfer from the Fantastic Four and the hovering board from Back to the future.

Here are some Wukong cool abilities that I didn't know much about until now.
Abilities
72 Bian/"72 Transformations": Allows him to shapeshift into almost any form-however, he is never able to transform his tail. He can also transform each of the 84,000 hairs on his body into another form, animate or inanimate, and often bites the hairs into pieces to create even more copies.
Bi Huo Jue/"Fire Avoidance Charm": Allows him to survive fire.
Bi Shui Jue/"Water Avoidance Charm": Allows him to survive deep water; however, he is unable to fight while using this ability.
Body Freezing Spell: Allows him to immobilize enemies.
Huǒyǎn-jīnjīng(火眼金睛)/"fiery-eyes golden-gaze": Allows him to identify evil no matter what form it takes; however, it also causes smoke to sting his eyes. Wùkōng acquired this ability after Lao Tzu traps Wùkōng in his cauldron for 49 days, attempting to distill him as punishment.
Jie Suo Fa/"Lock-Breaking Spell": Allows him to point a finger or his staff and open any lock.
Jīndǒuyún/"cloud-somersault" or “cloud trapeze”: Allows him to cover 108,000 li (54,000 km, 33,554 mi) in a single leap.
Protective Circle: Allows him to erect an impassible barrier by drawing a circle on the ground with his staff.
Shen Wai Shen Fa/"Body Outside of Body": Specifically refers to his ability to transform his hairs into fighting clones of himself.
Summoning: Allows him to summon local deities.
Wind: Allows him to summon strong winds and storms.

The writer for Wukong was way ahead of it time.
Now I remember Wukong is a stone monkey and he can transformed into one, just the The thing from fantastic four.
He can also turn into a giant ape. You can compare that to Ant man, the hulk and Caesar from Planet of the apes for being the first talking monkey.
Wolverine has facial feature as Wukong and both able to sniff out their enemy scents.
Wukong can control winds and storms, just like Storm from X-men.
I think Indian ocean trade was dominated by the indians and then also the Arabs.
That sounds like BS!
Can you make a playlist of these types of video?
Beautiful! Beautiful! Beautiful! You filled in the blanks in my own knowledge of both Xuanzhang and Nalanda!
I’m also curious on how did Xuanzang communicate with people spanning such a wide region (as in, what language he used)!
sign language?
He probably hired a translator
Good question!
I was wondering the same thing when he meet with different kings from different countries.
I'm guessing he learned to speak multiple languages.
I remember reading that the famous queen Cleopatra speak 8 languages.
He learnt the languages.
He knows Sanskrit. The language in Buddhist text.
Wow! The Tang Priest was awesome in this version. He didn't need help from a monkey demon, pig demon, and sand demon. And he spent a long long time touring the Western Heaven before returning with the scriptures to the great Tang.
Nice video!

Stop blaming India's problems on the British. They left over 50 years ago. Your government is in cahoots with food corporations. They took away the government-regulated farmers Auction so that farmers would be forced to sell at lower prices to big corporations.

how they communicate? no language barrier?
Xuanzang's journey took 17 years because he stopped at different schools to learn the language. There is a network of Buddhist learning centres where he could study Buddhism and the language. He also travelled with an entourage. So he probably picked up a few translators on his journey too.
He picked up a certain Indian language. In his rest life back in China, he devoted in translating the scripts.
Great video and great point about seeing your own culture through another's eyes.
Thanks!
Now I want play black myth
How long and how far did Xuenzhang go to the west?
I remember the Japanese Anime adaptation of this(Saiyuki:Reload)
The journey focus on the titular characters and finding all the heavenly scrolls and prevent the awakening of the Bull Demon/Gyumaoh
So the real story is that he pleased the gods and everyone and had some fun

Prity sad the modern Chinese seems forgotten the legend long ago .....and forget about the his great holy peacefull compassionate teachings 😓🙏
Indian Buddhism is highly developed philosophically. Chinese Buddhism is pop Buddhism
