I'm going to assume Kate and her mom aren't on the best terms, in which case, sure, go ahead and make her financially compensate Kate for the help. If they're on at least decent terms, then popping in to her husband's work to go "I'm not doing her a favor unless she pays me, helping my family isn't gonna pay my bills. You all agree with me, right? You'll take my side, right?" in front of thousands of people who probably have no idea of the situation seems extremely poorly thought out at best. Either way, that seems like a conversation that should be had in private and not brought up in front of thousands of people at your significant other's job.
