I still vividly remember his first broadcast for the Penguins on KDKA radio in 1974. I was 11. He was great immediately. No matter how good or bad the team performed, he always brought his trademark optimism and superb feel for the game. Now in 2020, I wish him the very best in his retirement and future - remember folks, he's 72. He's called the last 45 seasons of Pens' hockey. The best sports broadcaster I ever heard - seriously and genuinely. He simply loved hockey. As I literally grew up listening to this man, I will miss him dearly.

When we were at Duquesne University in the mid to late 80's we'd go to games and when they ended we ran like hell back to the dorm to catch the highlights and replays. Lange was a legend. Ran into him a few times in a couple bars in the North Hills. Absolute legend.

This man introduced me to the sport of hockey, though I'd been going to Pens games from the beginning with my dad (I was 4 yrs. old in '67, still have memories too). Just a class act, he had the ability to cause the radio listener to actually 'see' the hockey game. He had fun with it, he loved what he did, I've heard em all, from Musberger to Buck, to Scully to you name em, Mike Lange was better than all the rest! I'm blessed to have grown up listening to this man. West coast games and the "Night Owl Club", sayings and nicknames, and a love for his Penguins, yet somehow NEVER disrespecting the opposing teams. He went out of the way to really show emotion & call attention to the pretty plays & slick skating the Pens adversaries made & managed. He's an easy guy to love. Thanks for the memories Mr. Lange, you helped in sculpting some of the most loyal hockey fans, through a lot of lean seasons to Mario and 5 Cups, sold-out arenas & a love for hockey in a steel town that's remarkable!

I will always prefer hearing Lange call hockey games. The raw emotion he brought just can’t be replicated by Mears or Getzoff. When I worked evening shift in college a couple years ago, I always listened to the radio feed. Just felt better!

When I started watching the Pens in 79, Greg Millen was the goalie. I believe he was left handed which is unusual for a goalie.

Mike is a rare talent. He brought the listener into the game, made them feel a part of it.
He knew when Roberto Romano or Gilles Miloche was on his game and about to shutout the opponent before it happened. He knew when the Pens had their best skating legs. He tracked "Loney watches" and gave props to Zarley Zalapski when he scored on an end to end rush, not just the star players... though Pittsburgh has been blessed with so many.
He turned me onto hockey at an early age via KDKA radio. I still remember sneaking my radio into bed to listen to a west coast weekday road game. Was a proud member of the night owl club as an 8 year old.
