- Virgil Hawkins aka Static is one of my favorite creations of the 90s. But sadly, many people have no idea just how influential one of his creators was. Today we examine his career and contributions. Read the original Milestone Universe at bjkicks.link/mi...

I had never heard of Michael Davis, and I'm glad I have now. It seems like there's a certain urgency in getting him the credit he deserves for his contributions, because unluke Bill Finger he's still alive. He doesn't have to pass away unappreciated like Finger did.
Well done. Truthfully I didn't know anything about Michael Davis. It actually sounds like his contributions go beyond milestone with the art talent that he brought into the industry as well. I learned something today and when it comes to comic books that's not something I say often. Thank you.
It's amazing to know that Michael has created such impactful imprints, featuring Black people in the lead roles in all of them. From The Guardian Line for Urban Ministries to The Machine Works Universe published by Image and The Action Files from Pearson Learning, his work has reached and inspired many. It's unfortunate that the comic book industry hasn't acknowledged the representation and significance of these comics. However, it's encouraging to know that you put together a video that shines a light on a wonderful creative genius. The Action Files is the only curriculum-based comic book series distributed in schools, and The Guardian Line is distributed directly into the homes and churches of African Americans. Michael's work is truly making a difference. That difference HAS been noticed outside of the comic book industry. For one thing, his name is on a school. The Gordon Parks Academy in New Jersey houses the Michael Davis Auditorium. That's one honor among many he’s achieved.
Great video essay hope micheal Davis can get the recognition he so rightly deserves for being a part of creating static also this kinda video would be great for Ivan Velez who imo is one of the milestone creators who gets overlooked a lot despite the fact he wrote almost the entire blood syndicate run
I do want to make a Deep Dive about Blood Syndicate at some point. Such a rich and diverse cast of characters, dealing with some real life issues we haven't seen since. Maybe I'll interview Ivan for it.
@@comicsaredope awesome blood syndicate are my favorite out of the milestone launch titles
You did a great job, I will need to watch this again. I really like your Milestone videos
Thanks Rupert! Your support of the channel directly makes videos like these possible. I really appreciate you sticking with me. I still have to make a video of my full Milestone collection. Maybe next month.
This was awesome to see come together. Good on you Kicks for trying to set the record straight and try to get Davis the recognition he deserves for his part.
For the next one of these, I might separate the off the cuff postscript into a separate video. It kind of killed the flow of the video and felt kind of tacked onto the highly edited visuals and VO of the section. Still an awesome video
That makes total sense. The issue I ran into with this one was it’s an unresolved situation, so no conclusion I wrote felt right without the post script to clean it up.
Only 3 words come to mind for this for me, Wisdom with Honor. Thank you, and hope you have many more ahead.
thank you! I'm hoping to do more of these in the future, as time allows.
Great video and research!
Great Video. Thanks for this! Gotta respect the legends!
Man Milestone was and is super dope, I wish they wouldn’t have signed to DC I feel like it shorten their companies growth. They need to bring the animate shows back,I feel like that’ll help bring them back !
Honestly, without DC, there’s no way Milestone would’ve become the Milestone we know and love. They basically bankrolled EVERYTHING. I do sometimes wonder how they’d be doing if the current reboot had more autonomy though.
Very well done. Will look forward to the next one.
Very well done and researched. Great work!
Much appreciated! I'm glad you enjoyed it
14:30 Michael Davis left comics a MILLIONAIRE!!!! When he sold his shares in Milestone he netted MILLIONS! And STILL was a deal maker after that. Man bought a house in Beverly Hills!
Please do more video essays!!!
We gotta make this joint go Platinum lol
This is amazing! I learned so much from this video.
Great video, loved this and wish Michael would’ve gotten his credit.
it's tricky. He technically was never denied credit. Fans and journalists just didn't value his contribution, and it seems to have gone unnoticed since.
Love videos like this that explore the history behind comics.
Milestone is such a fascinating and revolutionary story in general and Static is a all time favorite show of mine when I was a kid.
The show holds up really well. I was a history nerd before I was a comic nerd, so videos like this are really fun for me. Thanks for watching!
no question about it. michael davis is the co-creator of STATIC.
Thank you so much for watching! You’re doing a signing at my LCS next week. I’m hoping to make it out after church!
Great work once again BJ, I love the way you’ve shown respect to all parties involved, tastefully done.
Thanks for watching bro! It was important to me to be respectful of everyone in the situation, and not assign intent (good or bad) to any of their actions. There are perhaps only 4 people alive who know the full story. My hope is that those who made these awesome creations get to feel the warmth and gratitude of their fanbase while they're all still here.
Amazing video sir
thank you!
Thanks!
thanks so much for the super thanks! I hope you enjoyed the video!
It’s hereeeeeeeeeee ⚡️⚡️⚡️
I hope you enjoyed it bro!
@@comicsaredope honestly a perfect blend of nostalgia, interesting history, and superb commentary! What’s not to like 👍👍
Great job as always BJ! Would definitely be interested in more videos like this.
