I gave it a half-arsed attempt 20+ years ago whilst living in Dagenham. ELL Aldwych and Epping to Ongar were still open. I gave up after about 75 stops...what an achievement you guys pulled off!
I just love the quality of these old homemade videos, they seem so wholesome and authentic. And OMG Geoff you look amazing! I just saw your birthday blog and you look like your 24 years old. You still look fab though, as always.
British-Aussie Lover I know 😩 I have very few memories of old '02 because I was so very young, but it's funny how experiences change the way you think and see things, the way you react. It's sad to realise that the world was much more better when I was a child because I didn't have the responsibility that all adults do to make the world a better place.
Cause back then, Widescreen did indeed exist, but not in the form it is today, most households back then still had 4:3 TVs. Only the more wealthier people had Widescreen TV’s.
I was 1 year old when that video was filmed, and it was a point in time where I lived in London. I lived there until I was 8, I live in Northampton now unfortunately.
I find that really annoying as well. Also when people put comments on videos saying "Is anyone watching this is 2020?" Of course they are! That's why the view count is going up.
Watching these have made me really tempted to run the entire TTC subway network in the fastest time (prob only a few hours to do it), it is not anything big like London or NYC but still would be fun.
Yeah, I suspected that once I'd watched the whole video properly! Totally obsessed with your videos and have always longed to do the challenge, but from the vids and the write-ups on your website, I now realise the complexity and if an expert like yourself struggles regularly, I'm screwed! The strategy, planning and proactivity regarding changing routes when a hitch occurs are on another level, mate. Mad respect, I have no doubt you'll smash the record again soon. Cheers for replying! Danny Boy.
If I'd known about the tube challenge in 2002 I would have been attempting it for the last 18 years. The problem is I only found out about it at the beginning of last year (Jan 2019). And that's despite the fact I've been a big fan of the tube since the 1980s when I was at primary school! Don't know how I didn't know about it during that time.
Geoff spinning on the pole on the train is hilarious and to be honest, when i first went to london with a friend of mine (her first time in london, not mine) she did that on the train but also did that somewhere in the middle of Torbay at 1 in the morning while drun on some pole outside a restraunt LOL
Geoff: I am never doing this ever again. Er...... Yes, you are. Last year Me and my mum, whilst not breaking the world record, did manage to break your last record Geoff. By the by, for those that didn't know (or feel like they've seen this video somewhere else before) Snippets of this video were actually included in "The Tube" S1 E2
It's probably easier now without the East London line and the now-very limited Olympia services. I do miss the A-stock and the un-refurbed D-stock:( That said it's a wicked challenge. I'd love to do it one day.
I LOVED the old Victoria line trains! What do you mean- Pimlico looks brilliant with the old 1960s deco! Also it''s a very fast line and has had less teething trouble than the jubilee line!!
Those who liked the Tube challenge also check the similar New York subway challenge with 469 station instead of the London tube challenge with its 275 or fewer station. Search google or RUclips for the video with the title: 469 stations in record time | The New York Times from the RUclips user: The New York Times
This was before the new Wood Lane and Heathrow Terminal 5 stations opened and before the East London Line closed in 2007 as it got replaced by London Overground Services (except Shoreditch).
Can someone please solve this tube mystery. Why is it not possible to provide expected train times on some electronic boards. For example on many district line stations like Hammersmith etc? Big thanks to anyone who can solve this. Its really annoying.
Ken Young Sorry for the belated reply. I'm not an expert, but I think it has something to do with the type of signalling installed on different parts of the tube that dictates how detailed the information is on countdown timers, meaning that lines with newer signalling (such as the Victoria, Northern, Jubilee and Central Lines) tend to have more detailed info on their countdown timers whereas the subsurface lines have far less. However, this doesn't appear to be a hard and fast rule. For example, near where I live in North London, until very recently, the Piccadilly Line had no information on it's countdown boards apart from the destination of the immediately approaching train, but oddly, as you went further down the line towards the center they had more information, which is weird because I would expect the same line to use the same system. They recently appear to have updated the system at the northern end though and hence now its up the standard it is on the rest of the line. Additionally, on the northern end of the Northern Line upto High Barnet, I can remember from when I was very young (only the early 2000's) that the boards there always had a detailed list of arrival times, so the conclusion to my very long diatribe here is that I'm not really sure, as it seems to vary vastly from line to line.
The East London Line which closed in 2007 to be replaced by the London Overground which removes 7 stations. Then they added Heathrow Terminal 5 and the new Wood Lane station to the tube map in 2008, adding 2 more.
I remember this being on a TV show! Probably Rail Cops or something? I can't remember but it was in the early 00s and did wonder if this was you who did it.
How many people have done all the tube stations in one operating period? And how many done all National Rail Stations in one calendar year. And how many done both?
All underground trains were like that in the old days but in the 90s most of the rolling stock was refurbished and the D stock was the last to be refurbished around 2005.
East London Line (Shoreditch closed in 2006, rest of stations closed in 2007 and were replaced by London Overground Services) Wood Lane and Heathrow Terminal 5 then opened in 2008.
wow, really! we first met you at the bloggers meet up at Gene's Haufrau in West Ashley, then at the BBQ at Mama's Brown in Mt Pleasant. ring a bell yet?!? am sure it was not all BAD memories.. :)
cool vid.. geoff, you look very young but maybe now a just a tad bit older?! =) but you still look the same when the first time we met you at the BBQ... remember where? =)
I like it Geff. I met you at the London Transport Museum on Thursday afternoon in workshop doing project of 150 years of London Underground. Geff your videos very interesting.
At 03:02, it says Mill Hill East, but you are clearly on a Jubilee Line train south from Stanmore towards Green Park, so may need to correct that. Great video though!
Watch Geoff's face slowly go from healthy to pale, to zombie, and ultimately to a semi-translucent shimmering white opal.
@ 11:46 "I'm never ever doing this again, ever." HA!
"Never doing this again" he's been doing videos about it for at least 10 years!
Just another 25 times
“Are you hungry, Geoff?”
“I really need a cup of tea”
Typical Geoff😂
he’s never changed! 😂😂
"I'm never doing this again" Errr, yes you will, with 20+ attempts over a decade. Great video though.
I gave it a half-arsed attempt 20+ years ago whilst living in Dagenham. ELL Aldwych and Epping to Ongar were still open. I gave up after about 75 stops...what an achievement you guys pulled off!

Same. Watching this 20 years on really makes you really how recording equipment and quality has improved over the years.
Cause back then, Widescreen did indeed exist, but not in the form it is today, most households back then still had 4:3 TVs. Only the more wealthier people had Widescreen TV’s.
And HD wasn’t a thing yet.
Geoff has apparently always looked like the bass player in an early 80s new wave band.
Hey, did you realise that Geoff Marshall is in the guinness world records 2015 book! He's in the transport section. :)
It must be weird to watch this back because it takes around 19 hours but now it can be done in around 16-17
Geoff: “I’m never ever doing this again, ever”
Geoff’s subscribers: “We’re about to end this whole mans career”
Watching this nearly two decades later thinking how tfl times have changed
Love these tube challenges, got to try it myself one day 😊
I am getting nostalgic for something I didn´t experience again
A bloody impressive effort Geoff (and team), I'm amazed you had the strength to push through the exhaustion.
Fresh faced slim Geoff. Love the channel keep it going . Greeting's from Seaham and we have a station and i hear the train's as they pass my house.
I was 1 year old when that video was filmed, and it was a point in time where I lived in London. I lived there until I was 8, I live in Northampton now unfortunately.
This guy ages well. I need to know how he does it!
Amazing video 👍. Something has changed in video-quality since 2002 😁
Why does everyone stress telling that they were not born yet / 2 yrs old ect ..... I don't get it.
RayEttler because it’s kinda amazing for them to think that Geoff has been doing this their entire lifetime, and they just need to vent that amazement
Because I wasn’t born yet
I find that really annoying as well. Also when people put comments on videos saying "Is anyone watching this is 2020?" Of course they are! That's why the view count is going up.

@@RayEttler I can think of more interesting ways to get attention than these silly comments. I agree with you completely.
In a old tube series you can seem him in one episode

Geoff's first ever Tube Challenge is EPIC!!!!

I remenever this from the tube
A hidden Geoff Marshall gem unearthed several years later. Nice.

Impressive to see how the Underground has changed in 20 years
Imagine if they went to every station on the TFL at once (Underground, Overground, DLR, Emirates airline cable car, Tramlink and TFL Rail)
Could take them 24-48 hours!
Geoff spinning on the pole on the train is hilarious and to be honest, when i first went to london with a friend of mine (her first time in london, not mine) she did that on the train but also did that somewhere in the middle of Torbay at 1 in the morning while drun on some pole outside a restraunt LOL
In 2002 me and my mates were filming ourselves going to music festivals or dicking around at the skate park. Geoff here did this instead.
3 years after this video was taken, I WAS BORN!!
Same 😂
Saw you on the old Tube program that used to be on Sky!
Geoff: I am never doing this ever again. Er...... Yes, you are.
Last year Me and my mum, whilst not breaking the world record, did manage to break your last record Geoff.

and even chesham is next to high wycombe and aylesbury and milton keynes where i live!
How have I not seen this before?😂
3:05 This is why most public transportation systems in the US forbid eating or drinking on the train or bus.
wow I was only 4 months old in this video! would have been nice to see myself
Ah, yes. Back when both the East London Line and the Chesham Shuttle were still in operation.
Need a Cup of Tea, some things dont change. When was the first Pret opened in London?
Drinking all that tea probably kept him looking so young still to this day
mid 1980s .... when those Bakerloo line trains were teenagers ...
omg this was filmed before i was even born! (i was born later that year)
i never knew the seats on the metropolitan line were different before the triangle design on the a stock trains
Wow! Geoff Looked Very Young!
It's probably easier now without the East London line and the now-very limited Olympia services. I do miss the A-stock and the un-refurbed D-stock:( That said it's a wicked challenge. I'd love to do it one day.
RUclips coincidentally threw this video into my feed one day short of 20 years after it was shot...
The trains and cars in your video look so old fashioned as you filmed before I was even born
is this the one that was on "The Tube" documentary?
im here 18 years later and you look the same
Strange how back them the Piccadilly line had dot matrix displays but not announcements
I remember watching the documentary of this
And I, for one, would quite like to see the other 15 minutes!
I LOVED the old Victoria line trains! What do you mean- Pimlico looks brilliant with the old 1960s deco! Also it''s a very fast line and has had less teething trouble than the jubilee line!!
Damm I miss '67 stock.
Had to resort to dining in the ones they've turned into a restraunt now.

And the bakerloo line still uses the old stock trains now. Only line that does.
Geoff I'm obsessed with the tube love it
19 years ago. Look at the video quality compaired to 4k these days in 2021
A young Geoff and the day's when the tube was good fun

whaaat did you take the east london line?!
This happened 2 years before I was born!
A nice reference to Waiting for the Ghost Train by Madness
This is just a demonstration about how revolutionary trains were even back in 2002?!
@8:11 anyone notice the voiceover is different? to current one on the central line who is now voiced by Emma Clarke
What were the 5 that aren't on the tube map now?
The East London line, now part of the Overground
The East London Line which closed in 2007 to be replaced by the London Overground which removes 7 stations.
Then they added Heathrow Terminal 5 and the new Wood Lane station to the tube map in 2008, adding 2 more.
this made you go on ITV1 on their show 'The Tube'
Did I spot Geoff with his feet on the seats :O tut tut ;)
what happened to the music at the end.
Never knew the central line says this train terminates at Hainult via Newbrey Park
17th May 2002, the day after my birth. So weird to think of like that 😮
I remember this being on a TV show! Probably Rail Cops or something? I can't remember but it was in the early 00s and did wonder if this was you who did it.
3:33 In Singapore you can't do that in trains or at stations LOL

if I could be anyone, I would be Geoff during the pre-war Blair era.
Woop woop I was -5 months old back then.
What are the stations that were open back the that've since closed,&didn't exist at the time?
Shoreditch, Wapping, Rotherhithe, Surrey Quays, New Cross, New Cross Gate + addition of T5
East London Line (Shoreditch closed in 2006, rest of stations closed in 2007 and were replaced by London Overground Services)
Wood Lane and Heathrow Terminal 5 then opened in 2008.

Nice one, Geoff. Don't know anything about the City airport, but I'm assuming you don't use DLR to get there.
You've missed Richmond, Kew Gardens and Gunnersbury, right?
That's because they weren't part of the underground at that time.
3:04 that's a Jubilee line train not a Northern line so it can't be Mill Hill East!
I like the old sign at morden
Which station do you visit most often?
no way of Geoff that is so good for me as so!!!!!!
