I have always dreamed of being a mechanic on a ship like that! I would have been good at keeping things in order! Thanks for showing this. I was on a cruise ship once and they wouldn’t let me in the engine room.
That’s no cruise ship engine, that’s a horizontal “double acting” / compound steam engine aboard what was originally a side paddle steam ferry. To anyone noting how clean the engine is, granted it has been EXTREMELY meticulously maintained but the fact it is a reciprocating steam engine and not an internal combustion engine is the main factor in her clean, smooth operation. With a reciprocating steam engine the force driving the engine itself comes from only steam, plus a tiny bit of steam oil injected into the cylinder. All journal bearings are kept topped up on oil in their oil cups and don’t result in much spillage / flinging of oil or require a ton of oil to be added thanks in large part to the relatively low speed the engine rotates, this clip looks like she’s turning somewhere around 60-70 RPM, where a modern diesel or diesel-electric powerplant on a ship that size would be running somewhere in the neighborhood of 800-1000 RPM.
That is the cleanest engine room I have ever seen
