  • In this talk, Mohnish discusses the three basic attributes an investor should possess to effectively beat the odds. 1. Patience 2. Decisiveness and 3.Being different from the crowd.
Mohnish reviews the multiple mental models behind Berkshire’s investment in Coca-Cola. Buffett’s lessons from his See’s Candies investment played a major role in his decision to invest in Coca-Cola.
Some of the factors that influenced Buffett’s investment in Coca-Cola include:
    1. Coca-Cola was naturally a global company while Buffett had failed to make See’s Candies global.
    2. The Coca-Cola drink lacks an after taste and that means one has the ability to consume Coke repeatedly, significantly more than candy.
    3. Warren and Charlie read every annual report since Coca-Cola went public. Their insight was that unit case volume of Coke went up every single year despite the wars, stagflation and economic depression. They came to the conclusion that Coke was bullet proof.
    4. Humans are creatures of habit and cannot change their habits especially when it comes to personal spaces like the mouth. This keeps competition at bay.
Mohnish also talks about several mental models used by Coca-Cola to advertise its products, including:
The Association tendency - Advertisements position Coke in an image where people are happy. Coke is associated with celebrities and major events around the world.
Social Proof tendency - Coca-Cola advertisements almost always try to show people having a good time with Coke.

Three traits of WB & Charlie that Peter Kaufman talked abput - i) Extreme Patience- Naturally, blissfully, guy who loves the paint try , ii) Extreme decisiveness, when the opportunity shows up & iii) Being different, not worried about what people think about you & no stress about it. Wonderful! I so agree, but couldn`t practice.

At 1:31:00 Monish adresses what exactly has been bothering me A LOT. I work in taxes and when I spend couple hours reading some legal paperwork I get paid in the end. Completely different with investing, I have spent a lot of time reading financial statements, studying the company to not invest in the end. You don't feel the immediate results. But you learn during the process. Humans tend to seek instant gratification and sometimes research doesn't guarantee that.

The lecture excludes comment on management of the company. He was Warren's neighbor. Many of the things are rationalizing stuff. Think 3 microeconomics model are enough. Warren was always scared of Inflation which this company addressed, stickiness was other and substitution was difficult due to economies of scale in distribution and advertising. Rest all is not SO necessary

do yourself a favor and try to obtain Pabrai Funds annual report - it's pretty tough but possible.
Here you will find investment performance of his (four if I remember correctly) funds. In short - performance is a total disaster. Pabrai is nothing more than desperate speculator which dress up his "philosophy" in some kind of "value investing". He totally resembles Max Planck chauffer who learned by heart some stuff about physics but do not understand intrinsically how it works.
