**key point that may not have been mentioned and might not be clear to newbies: as you walk upwind to fill the kite with wind (eliminating the flutter), make sure center lines are TIGHT, otherwise you're actually not connected to the kite and you could get an unexpected surprise when the kite suddenly gets powered! :)
Great video! Might I add that for those who aren't sure how to figure out what direction directly upwind is, when you look into the wind it's when the turbulent wind noise against your ears is equal!
Good idea to set lines up with bar downwind of kite - less likely to accidentally ask launcher to pick up a powered up kite and knock them over. Just tension lines and walk up wind until kite stops flapping. Must have tension in the lines though - not having this is commonest mistake. Also good practice to have kite pointing out to sea rather than into land - in case of unexpected gust / snag / kitemare - always safer getting dragged into sea rather than solid object. Also wind often less gusty away from land obstructions.
Great video. Sometimes I have to tell my helper to hold the kite more perpendicular to the ground in order to get even tension on the center lines. Some people tend to drop the upper wing tip away from you for some reason and this creates uneven tension in the center lines.
Yeah nice :) I also find if the wingtip is dropping back when someone is helping, then you can take another 2 or more steps upwind and the tension will come as the kite fills with air :)
Awesome Michael! Stoked that your getting into kiting, let us know how you go We'll also be launching a complete learn to kite course in the new year if your interested :) so keep an eye out. ~Flukeskitesurfing
pretty much just plowed through every one of your videos. super helpful, and makes me really wish i was learning kiting on nice sandy beaches in australia instead of nitinat lake haha
Hey Aprilia, glad you like them mate! To answer your question, I would say that it's best to set your trim to what you estimate you will be flying the kite based on the wind speed. (That's what I always do, no matter how I plan to launch the kite) however, in gusty conditions, its said that setting your trim to having more power will help stabilize the kite and less power will help minimize unexpected overpowering, If in doubt, it's best to depower the kite a little as a general rule to keep safer, however again, when I am launching and landing I do so as I would fly and use the kite. Thanks
I just bought my own set and have done 2 sessions on my own but still have to build some confidence and understand the whole thing that makes kitesurfers go. Thanks for your video's they sure help me a lot!! You seem like an awesome dude to hang out with.
Superb video and explanation, can you please explain what the reason is for the extra two steps upwind, after you found the kite was in the perfect position, thanks
Hey synegy, thanks for the comment and yes, great question. The two steps simply give better control for the pilot. After finding the "perfect spot" (canopy fills) if you were to launch, you may still find the kite drifts slightly back, and/or a lighter less controlled feeling at the bar. Taking the two steps upwind will give you that extra control. This is especially important in crowded areas where you need the launch to go exactly as planned. :)
Thanks for making these videos. They are helping me learn a lot. I have never flown a kite but plan to take some lessons soon. One question I have is it better to launch the kite facing the water Incase you get dragged? I’m just thinking it’s safer to be pulled into the water instead of brush, structures, etc. Like I said I never launched a kite or anything so if there is a simple answer please let me know.
Great stuff. I bought a kite to train with, but it doesn't have a central line- the yoke takes all the power. Is there a training kite that is more nearly like the harnessed kite? (Smaller, of course)
Hey Bubba, the Ocean rodeo react trainer uses a full system the same as a big kite. If you really want to spend some time on a trainer that has a small harness and lets you sheet in and our etc that might be the way to go :)
Shocking number of kite surfers I’ve launched with on the beach don’t seem to know these things … like one I had yesterday looked like a pro with all the gear… so I asked him to launch me… and he just released it before I was ready with the kite still major flapping … so it drifted dangerously into the window and we were facing trees and other hard objects. Luckily a low wind day. But I guess we need to check the plan if it’s with a kiter you won’t know
how do you even surf in those upshore wind conditions? yes you taught me that term haha can you really steer into those winds? or does a boat take you into the water lol
So often when I launch other kiters on the beach they just don’t know where to stand and so there’s often way to much power on the kite when I launch it. Last week I literally got knocked over
Hi Jeff, thanks for some of the most informative and well made Kite videos on U tube. Just one question. At around 3:45 you say, "....and ease the kite up.....". How to exactly to do that part? I´ve had instructors tell me everything from use bar pressure only, to use no bar pressure and only gently tug on the top steering line as in the water relaunch. This is a subject worth an entire video lesson in itself, but if you could shed some light on that for me I´d really appreciate it. Thanks, Tom
Hi, to raise the kite all you need to do is gently pull on the bar. On land you should slowly pull the bar and only water you should pull one side of the steering lines in a downwards and outwards motion, not towards you. Hope this helps
Luke you are SUCH a good teacher!!
Thanks so much for making kiters safer and happier all over !
Thanks inventsc! I appreciate the comment mate :) glad you like them.

Hey Sportoman, yes absolutely agree, tension on the lines is necessary to make this work properly. thanks for the comment
Man, you made it so simple again. Watch it every time before season.
Awesome!!
The clearest explanation I've seen! Easy to visualize and commit to memory. Great vid :)
Great thanks Ed!
Great video! Might I add that for those who aren't sure how to figure out what direction directly upwind is, when you look into the wind it's when the turbulent wind noise against your ears is equal!
Hi, Thanks a lot for all these super clearly explained tips, your contribution is amazing. I am really grateful!
You have the best kitesurfing video for a newbie

thanks Alan, all good points. thansk for the comment!
But the wind is usually on shore so you can’t really point it out to sea ?
Dude, you are the explain king! Great video!
Thansk mate! :)
After 5 years kitesurfing and also teaching some people I did not know about these aspects in such deep detail.
Awesome! Great to hear you love kiting to!
Thanks for the comment & we'll cya in the next one,

Excellent video, I wish I could launch like this regularly. I absolutely love your vids. Thanx so much mate.

Thanks mate again you are the best!
A czy po impregnacji permetryna wełny merino cos się dzieje z materiałem ? Albo jakieś ślady na skórze butów ?
thank you so much for these awesome tips! would adjusting the trim strap in during launching/landing help reduce the instability in gusty conditions?

Awesome thanks Ham! Yeah, it takes a few sessions to get the hang of it, but then it becomes much easier as you go :) Have fun out there!

how do we draw a line in the water?

Oh geeezz yeah not helpful if they let go too early!
What size kite is that
Would be good to see a video about launching in a restricted area .. like a tiny beach with trees and concrete 🙃
Great suggestion! Might be able to film that very soon :)
how do you even surf in those upshore wind conditions? yes you taught me that term haha can you really steer into those winds? or does a boat take you into the water lol
Hey Hari, yeah you can, its not easy to get out... but you can make it if you can kite upwind ok :)
Hello Fluke
Thanks...

Glad to hear it Rico!
Perfect
