That's a sound from my childhood. The CB&Q ran thru my small town. In the 1940's, the railroad was transitioning from steam to diesel but many secondary trains still had steam power with these whistles. What a sound!
And to think. CB&Q's 4-8-4s used these 5 chimes. I have a brass model of 5629 and every time i hear this whistle, I stare that my model and simply say, "I'm surprised. I thought they used low tone whistles."
#90 wore a CB&Q five chime during her revenue years on the Great Western In Colorado, Maybe The Strasburg should swap out the Reading Six Chime & Place the CB&Q 5 chime on her to make it more historically accurate.
Brian like I told you, until someone else can confirm its 90's whistle on 89 its a rumor. You are the only one that has said anything, and at times you can foam a little too much.

That's the best whistle I've ever heard!

This was one of the 5 chimes worn on the Strasburg. The other was a clogged CN steptop 5 chime.
Something about this whistle just suits any engine.
The whistle reminds me of 587
The 89 5 chime whistle is very beautiful not lying

Nah nothing can top the Reading 6 Chime
@@ryansrailfanning Maybe so, But it would make it more historically accurate since it's what it wore during its time in revenue service in Colorado.
i came from the Future and they havent put back the 5 chime
That whistle almost sounds like the one on nickel plate 587
Speaking of 587, she’s in Ravenna, Kentucky awaiting restoration after 2716.
This is rumored to be 90's original whistle. Any thoughts?

It probably is. I’ve seen pictures of 90 in the great western era and the whistles are very different.
@@MrNJT 31s 5 chime was clogged up sounded and was on lower PSI. Check out some clips from the mid 80s
I thought it was a lima 5 chime
