- How do you find good food in a food desert? That's the problem that TemuAsyr Martin Bey, an urban farmer, activist, and fellow for the National Young Farmers Coalition, first tried to tackle. Now, Temu is on a mission to bring healthy food to Compton and beyond. With rising food insecurity, Temu is equipping his community with the tools to access and grow and harvest their own healthy, organic food.
Created in partnership with Two Good Yogurt, a brand on a mission to help address food waste and food insecurity #ad

We need to teach more agriculture in school and schools need gardens!
No sh*t😂
It's available if you live near farms... we need more laws, doctors, police not farmers
🇿🇦
Nope teach them math and science, schools are not responsible to teach the kids every thing sometimes you need to be youre own teacher or to learn from life and youre surrounding, teachers are already underpaid now you want to add agriculture in to the mix jajajaj
@@ElIbroDelos5anillos you're wrong! I learned agriculture in junior and high school! I grow my own veggie and fruit. It's not that difficult to make a garden and to also maintain it organically... Peace
@@ElIbroDelos5anillos I like Japanese education system, very respectful
on top of all this, the act of gardening is stronger than any antidepressant drug on the market. Reaping the fruits of your labor is good for the soul.
Especially when growing drugs containing plants, man once you can grow the drugs you ain't need no drugs anywhere no more
As someone who both gardens and has depression gonna say nah fam.It is a fantastic and very positive thing tho.
You better 🗣🗣🗣say that ok 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
@@belizeanhippi3 huh?
@@thesaint9276 as in I agree with your statement what you said is facts !! Lol
Love how the doc said, "fast food becomes a treat, and not an everyday thing."
No animosity, and no my way is better than your way. That's how you change people's minds and hearts. Love this!
I'm from Detroit and for two years before the pandemic I lived on an urban farm- it was about four lots, all edible growth, and it made a HUGE difference to the community. Big props to this gentleman for generating so much food, and good, for the people in his community 💪👏
Lucky my mum and dad, aunts and gran have ALWAYS grown food.
Onions and potatoes, cabbage and green. Stock up the freezer. I hated striping green beans when I was young.
Now I can think of anything better than sitting at the table with them chatting and learning.
That little man watering the plants made my heart happy
You mean you can’t think of anything better?
Every morning I wake up and the first thing I see is a poster that says, “despite all our accomplishments, our existence depends on six inches of top soil and the fact it rains”. Growing food is a joy, a way to support your family & community and the best way to appreciate what really matters. Loved this video, loved this dude!
As a young small farmer from the city myself, it brings me joy to see young city people farming and building something new from a dead land, and most importantly being self sustained. Great job Compton farmers
Good for you homeboy. Im Mexican American from South San Diego and a Flowertent owner for the past 4 years. I love growing flowers, vegetables, and herbs and enjoy offering these products to the gardening communities. Ive recently opened another location in upstate NY which was an experience in itself dealing with the frost but we still grinding my boy! Back home in Daygo doing my thang like you said, we really out here in the field 💯
Farming in Compton is actually pretty dope
I see what you did there
Man I love seein young blk men speaking on real public consumption concern and grafting salutions to the worlds problems
Yes, me too.
We need more scientists
Love this, my daughter has a garden at her school that they tend to as well as home. We teach the neighborhood kids how to garden as well. It makes the process of eating much better, healthier and normalizes fruit and vegetables.
30 seconds into the video and i was saying "i fucking love this guy" out loud
Damn. I'm super impressed! This is awesome. He's out there to change things fr fr! Time to realize we _all_ would do much better with a guy like him in the hood, no matter where we're from! GO TEMU! 👑👍
We need more scientists, attorneys, lawyers, police, doctors, engineers etc. Not farmers
@@Global.Blackmail999hug even scientists, attorneys, lawyers, police, doctors, engineers etc need food
@@zap7026 so if everyone wants to be a farmer then there's too many unemployed or under skilled 'farmers' and a shortage of doctors, lawyers, engineers, and scientists...
This is happens in the world, and is happening right now...
@@Global.Blackmail999hug In urban environments you surely find less farmers than scientists, attorneys aso. But willingly unemployed people are the major problem *where I'm from* . However, I don't wanna start a fundamental discussion.^^
@@Global.Blackmail999hug you can't be serious. what makes you you have to be one or the other
Love these types of stories, keep inspiring ❤🔥
the fact that the top part of a strawberry has more nutrition than kale, blew my mind
Hell ya this is what we all need to realize growing your own food and knowing how to grow in your own food no matter where you live is essential to survival and it's one of the most peaceful rewarding things you can never do I commend this young man awesome people doing awesome things
This is really nice to see hopefully more folks start to understand the importance of a garden
Have my own allotment and I'm often shocked at the amount of people who simply won't accept free organic veg from myself as oppose to buying it from a supermarket. It's insane. Most don't understand the importance of knowing where your food comes from, and feel safer buying from a shop shelve! They actually turn their noses up! Then obviously this becomes generational. Gardening has also literally saved my life over years of being on antidepressants. This will have to change if our communities are to ever become self-sufficient and therefore healthier.
Born at St Francis Hospital in 1950's and this is terrific. My ol neighborhood coming back. Grandpa and grandma had apricot orchard on Carlin and Santa Fe Blvd.
this is the future right here the global food industry is simply unsustainable and cannot last indefinitely props to these guys
We need more people like him ✌️
We need more scientists...
I always see ''we need more people like him'' maybe you and the people that liked can be like him??
@@Chris-ve8xw we need truly good people but that's nearly impossible since people are opportunist
Your comment is only halfway typed... We need more people by him to be shot by the LAPD... There you go Bud finished the comment for you... You can thank me later.. lmao the only farming black people are doing in Compton is growing some "dank bud" in their government funded project housing.... Only a black man in Compton California can grow weed and it's still come out some low potency mids... Lmao 😆
Blm ✊🏿 too busy putting victimhood in your head
💘 😻 💜 💛 💚 I love this work. I'm a black farmer in Northern Humboldt but the "you can feed a family of 3 from a 4'x8" bed" statement made me giggle. Maybe you could eat like for 4 days straight, but then you start all over again from seed.Again this need to be everywhere in the hood and I love it
Respect to the young cat, he doing good things.
This man is an outstanding citizen of earth. Salute
We need more scientists not farmers
@@Global.Blackmail999hug they are not mutually exclusive...
@@abellabarbie you understand there's currently a shortage of doctors and lawyers while there's lots of 'unskilled' farmers? Go actually learn about the world/history and stop saying you already do...
@@Global.Blackmail999hug I'm a scientist. 😂😂😂 And I grow my own food in my garden. 😂
I’m glad to see they haven’t killed these gardens
That's awesome and inspiring to see a young man rise above adversity and have such an outstanding attitude...
I love this. Life changing knowledge for the community.
Consumerism... That's what we learn, to buy foods from companies that make billions of profit from us. We need to go back and re-learn the basics of growing our own food and be self-sufficient . If the government doesn't make the initiative, it's up to us to do it...
This is a garden right by my childhood home and its so wonderful seeing it uplift the community like this 💞
We need more agriculture in urban areas.
We need more scientists not activists
:58 I remember living across the street when that spot was getting built about 6 years back up on rosecrans and Dwight man how much I miss those days
What a great idea. I helped run a local community garden for anyone for about 2 years and had a great time.
We need more scientists not farmers also community gardens are rarely run properly
@@Global.Blackmail999hug nah bro you just hating
@@d00mboy13 so our Earth doesn't need more scientists to invent/discover amazing things? Also community gardens rarely can feed 1 person for a whole month
@@Global.Blackmail999hug Well obviously you don't run them properly or the local ones to you aren't run properly. We had/have enough veggies to feed 10 families. You can't expect it to be a 100 acre farm for the whole town. Getting some veggies here and there is better than nothing. Plus you're teaching people that eat McDonalds for dinner every night that it really isn't that hard to grow your own.
@@workman88 I think you don't understand what I mean, people need more parks for healthy/social benefits not community gardens like in the video above, there's a truly amazing video about community permaculture in Mexico
Growing up in the country, it was just normal to have an agricultural class, we also had home economics, a mix of cooking, sewing and other home based classes.
Basic gardening and cooking should be taught in all high schools, it's far more prevalent to life than many other subjects that are taught.
A well rounded education should be taught until the end of high school, university is for specialised education.
Your mind set is what we need in all our communities. You are awesome!
1:47 African word? Africa is a continent. Which Country?? In my country we speak 14 different languages..so yeah be specific about the country. Overall, I love this❤❤❤❤
Kemetic aka ancient Egyptian. Kemet at 1 time covered the vast majority of Africa to some extent.
moved at of my parents’ crib and my intake and growing of organic foods stopped, gotta bring it back up!! very inspiring for our community
What this does is it reinforces the bond between you and the world around you. You're growing it in the soil you live around and you're taking care of it and it's taking care of you.
Major props to this community! @vice check out what Black Soil KY is doing in Kentucky.
This is lovely! I hope they keep doing what they're doing. We need people like them
I think the best thing we could do is teach people how to grow their own food. Self-sufficiency was lost in the 20th century when people went from farm to city.
My God. I came across this vid on a day when I needed it. Sometimes it's hard to keep my faith in humanity alive.💚
I live on the Westside of Compton 🌴 recognized all these places!
This gives me hope for the future. It doesn't happen at the National level, our system is broken. It starts at the local level and trickles up. Community gardens serve so many great purposes, for the community and environment
I believe it is our birthright to know how to grow food; we have relied on big boxes to shop from. It's time for a mass return back to our indigenous roots and learn to rely on ourselves and each other. I see gardening as "the new black".
Don’t even bring color into this🤦🏼♂️ it’s just growing food
@@WhoTFVotedBiden You're so bothered. Return to your insular lane.
@@abellabarbie he’s right tho, it’s just..growing food as we always done
Wow, great ideas. America neeeds to be sustainable.
Good on this man and his community on teaching people how to grow their own food! 😊🌼🌱🍓🥕💚
I think urban farming, vertical farming and other projects involving plants & trees will be vital in helping cities become sustainable and more healthy for their residents. 🌳🌷🍎🥗
This is awesome! I’m going to take over looking after the Franciscan friar’s garden at my college.
"Dirt don't hurt", but parasites do. Always wash your vegetables.
Indigenous aboriginal. I appreciate that. From your Niiji brother
I wish we can do more projects like this in LA. I think it is really hard to organize now cause of how people who want to make a difference are being disconnected by financial stress in the city. But I’m glad to see projects like this pop up.
Anybody else remember “Black Jesus” on Adult Swim? Pretty sure they started a garden in Compton on the show a few years back. Funny coincidence lmao
Very inspirational Salute 🫡 to this young Man 👑💯
Become a scientist and have an even greater impact

Yes, why can’t he be an agriculturist in Compton! 🌱
Who else read the title farming in Compton and thought yeah it's from vice it's definitely going to be a video about some dude growing some dank bud in the projects...
Hope this guy keeps it goin

Guaranteed that this is the next thing they try to ban kids from learning.
What a marvellous and magical group!
I recall a shirt my mum wore in the 90’s. It had a big picture of the planet and said ‘ God made dirt so dirt don’t hurt’ I don’t think i have heard it said since. These folks are everything i dream of being. Thank you
We got the Compton cowboys and now agriculturists 😎 making Compton a better place
Wish every young human person such ad yourself would have this mindset 🥲

We don't need more farmers. We need more attorneys, doctors, scientists etc.
@@Global.Blackmail999hug We need it all (knowledge/ talents).

In my country there's something similar and has been a great way to get people food and something todo. This is important and we should be doing this more.

That's dope. I was just kicking with this guy. Real solid cat. Glad he's getting the notoriety he deserves.
Wow, was not expecting this but I'm glad i watched it. Great video
His energy is infectious! I started smiling not even 20 secs into the vid 😂❤
I just LOVE all of this! Let's reclaim what's ours! Life itself is on the line
About 5 years ago we were looking at stopping growing food in our yards, it was simply not worth it, potatoes, garlic, peas, onion, dill, carrots were so cheap in the store, now everyone is contemplating starting to grow again, but people have less time to take care of the garden when inflation is creeping up and everyone slaves their ass at work for every penny they can get.
Food desert: Grocery shops that sell what their customers demand. In this case, just junk food.
this video's way better than some of the low level booboo content VICE shows usually
My parents have an avocado tree, fig tree, lemon tree, Chile tree, orange, tomato, cilantro and more 😆
I remember waking up once, early as hell. And going with my mom to Compton and drinking cow milk, feeding goats and riding the horses on peoples farms. I was surprised to learn we were in Compton. Lol
This is great!!! And this is awesome this young man has stepped up and started doing this 👍
Thank you 💯
There is no such thing as the earthworm capital of the world. Earthworms are actually invasive.
Just kidding. Love the Compton gardeners. Pretty dope! #loverarthworms #comptongarden
I find it very sad that the people from Africa have such an amazing connection to their land (just like ALL people in the World). When African people were trafficked to the USA as slaves, they were originally doing agricultural work. Many people were brought from Cameroon (I think) to South Carolina because they had acumen in rice-farming.
However, today, we don't see too many African-Americans associated with farming or being land-owning kulaks. I think that this trend is changing, and now we're seeing activist-farmers like Soul-Fire Farms and this gentleman.
BEST WISHES TO YOU MARTIN BEY!!!
They did that in the bronx NY when I was in H.S. in 1990s
I just found your yougurt products! Brought some home very good!

"Jegna" is not an african word, it is an Ethiopian word from east africa and its amharic language which means strong or powerful.
That’s not unusual in Compton they’ve got 🐎 horses there too.
Food dessert, so youre telling me that if you live in a city full of bldngs and concrete and there isnt green spaces there isnt going to be natural organic food wow who would of tought
