Hell Yeah!!! Locke & Key is a masterpiece. I wasn't sure I was gonna like it during the first few pages but then I could not put it down, I was reading it everywhere, standing in the bus going to the university even. It is amazing how much you get to feel for each character, they leap off the pages and they even got me to tears a copuple of times. The moment I knew I was completely in love with this was when in Keys To The Kingdom they had an homage for Bill Waterson and there were parallels between Rodriguez's style and Waterson's. Grabbed the box set of this series a couple years ago and ended up going through it faster than any other series I've read. Reading it on lunch breaks and rushing through work so I could read more before the drive home. Excellent series. The only other series that I've motored through at even close to that pace were from Brian K Vaughn (Runaways & Y: The Last Man). On a related note, Locke & Key: Dog Days (a one shot) is coming out from Hill/Rodriguez. It was supposed to coming out next week for Halloween but got delayed a week. This will also have some stuff regarding the upcoming TV series.

Hi Chris, thanks for making these videos! I love every upload. I really enjoy your perspective, insight, and clear passion for both the history and artistry of each comic you cover. I feel like each of your videos is like a little mini-lecture in a comics literature course. I'm worried about posting this comment because it could easily come across as judgy and superior, but I'm commenting anyway because you seem like a genuinely nice and thoughtful guy and I think you'd like to be aware. I'll try to be humble throughout. In your video, you mention one of the characters is "a mentally retarded boy." I work in social services with children, and about 5 or 6 years ago, we stopped using "retarded" as a diagnostic category entirely, replacing it with "developmentally disabled" (for children) and "intellectually disabled" (for adults). The reason was explicitly to avoid harmful language in response to shifting use of language in broader culture. The phrase was slowly being phased out of clinical usage for a while, but the hard cut-off was with the implementation of the DSM-V, published in 2013. When we first started using "mentally retarded" to diagnose various developmental disorders, the phrase was essentially unknown outside of medical circles. The phrase was seen as kinder and less pejorative than other, older diagnostic categories like "imbecile" (which was a diagnostic category for anyone who scored between 30-50 on an IQ test) and "idiot" (which was for anyone who scored below a 30). But, like those categories before it, as the general public became exposed to the word "retarded," and began to associate it with people who were different, other, scary, or unsettling, the word started to be used more often as an insult than as a clinical descriptor. I don't think you were being insulting. It seems to me that you were using the language that you know to be accurate and appropriate to describe the characters in the story. That's why I'm posting this comment. You seem to be someone who takes the work you do seriously, and is aware of the ways that you engage with an influence discourse. To make my point explicit: I don't think you did anything wrong by using the language of "mental retardation" and I could tell by the way you talk about it that you respect people with intellectual disabilities. I'm letting you know about this shift in language not to try to control your words or to tell you that you are wrong, but to let you know about the possible unknown impact of your language choice, and some other options that might be more inclusive. Again, thank you so much for putting these videos together. I sincerely respect the amount of work and passion that goes in to each one, and I hope you keep making them for as long as youtube is a thing.
I didn't read this comic but i heard it few years ago. In past two days, outta knowere I started to think should I buy it or not. And I read some reviews on the internet yesterday. Today I saw that my favorite comic chanel has a new episode about lock and key. I'm shocked. P.S. I'm buying it anytime soon. Thanks Chris.
Man, I was so close to finishing Locke and Key back in the day. I just had Alpha to go, but then there was a move and a bunch of other stuff, and now it's been like 6 years, and I don't know if I remember enough to go back to it. And I bought I think the first 5 volumes on the PSP (anyone else remember you could get comics on PSP?), so I probably would need to re-buy a lot if I wanted to reread it.
Man, things aren't working out. I know, I will move to a town called Lovecraft. Thing will definitely work out.... Now if I can find a nice house to live in...
I just watched the Netflix show and I would say the original comic looks so much richer than the show. Although the show was good, they missed out on some good story
Nice episode, I have heard about Locke & Key a while back but never got around to checking it out, but after this episode I'm considering checking it out as soon as I'm done with Invincible. Hopefully no child orgies are involved 😏
That was my biggest issue the Netflix show didn’t know what it wanted to be did it want to be stranger things to a teen drama the music drove me made with its fairytale notes the shows tone was by far the worst aspect. Also the acting wasn’t great but I put that down to it be badly written
@@Ayutarda The horrendous S3 of stranger things already features enough teen drama. No idea why they'd need another show like that set in a horror-type universe
to me the issue was not necessarily the change of tone. If it were well written, it wouldn't be too big of an issue. The main issue I have is that the characters are dumb (communicate for Heaven's sake!) the playful and smart scenarios using the keys are constantly glossed over (way to kill the excitement of finding new keys, when most of the keys are not used at all) and this is compounded by poor pacing and plot structure. For instance, they delay Sam's return. Instead of him using scissors, he uses a magic key (way to tone down the horror) and worst of all, by the point he returns, they have the music box key, which they conveniently never think of using (it's the one that makes people obey you). It's grade A idiot ball: the characters are dumb because the plot can't proceed as planned otherwise.
Olivia Williams really. I tried it after reading the books but, I dunno, I found the format ( more like a radio play than an audiobook) kinda distracting. I never finished it but keep promising myself I will. It’s in my library
The pilot on Netflix is called " Welcome to Matheson" but should have been titled "Welcome to Lovecraft" like in the graphic novel. I hope the show is as good as the comic seems.

Again, thank you so much for putting these videos together. I sincerely respect the amount of work and passion that goes in to each one, and I hope you keep making them for as long as youtube is a thing.
Agreed one of my favourite comics of all time
I didn't read this comic but i heard it few years ago. In past two days, outta knowere I started to think should I buy it or not. And I read some reviews on the internet yesterday. Today I saw that my favorite comic chanel has a new episode about lock and key. I'm shocked.
P.S. I'm buying it anytime soon. Thanks Chris.
Never heard of this before. Thanks for the recommendation.
You can read the entire series for free on hoopla. As long as you have a library card
I love Locke and Key but I'm also eyeballing that Monstress over your shoulder, looking forward to that episode.
Agree. My favorite comic the last coupla years, by a long shot!
Are you going to do Finder by Carla Speed McNeil next?
Thanks
Excellent pull! I loved Locke and Key and totally forgot about it.
I've read them all. Love them. Waiting on upcoming show and possible more volumes.
Demon chick throws a little kid under a subway train after opening a portal door to a platform in a playground to steal his key.
Think it's time for another re-read. I wish there was some kind video essay series on this comic.
I know what I'll be reading next. Great video, Chris.
Man, things aren't working out. I know, I will move to a town called Lovecraft. Thing will definitely work out.... Now if I can find a nice house to live in...
Love your content man it's pretty fun to watch
You should do the IDW Transformers MTMTE/LL series. Its wacky, wholesome fun that everyone thats read it loves
I thought that it was just me that liked to tie and padlock myself up in front of the computer screen...
They filmed the pilot for a Locke & Key TV series, but was never picked up by the networks.
Is that a sheet? Lol NVM it was.. also noticed you were holding that padlock 😂
This series feels like it was made in 2012 but it is 2019
How accurate, Dago was also a good guy, once...
Lol at chris hastily editing to get the video in
I just watched the Netflix show and I would say the original comic looks so much richer than the show. Although the show was good, they missed out on some good story
Locke and Key and Peele
What do you guys think of the tv show ? It doesn’t seem as twisted as the comic
Thank God IDW took The chance on series.
I'm still waiting for an "OH HI! You caught me..." shirt to be available in the merch shop:)
Nice episode, I have heard about Locke & Key a while back but never got around to checking it out, but after this episode I'm considering checking it out as soon as I'm done with Invincible.
Hopefully no child orgies are involved 😏
Great show!
Don't get excited for the new Netflix show, it's been watered down to a teen drama/family friendly borefest
And so many characters in the show making obvious dumb decisions. It really put me off
Can confirm
personally i listened to the Audible audiodrama version, was missing on the art but the performance was pretty great
Olivia Williams really.
Ph@tMantv Matheson? They must be Starkid fans...
Oh shit! I've been waiting for this one!!!!
