That's impressive that you would able to string that length of antenna wire around your property. That gives me greater hope for installing a 71' random wire antenna in my 30'x100' suburban lot.
Thanks for the video Bob, that was a very impressive HOA limited install (HOA limited myself). Your videos have inspired me to experiment and try all types of antenna ideas in my backyard to "get on the air" I enjoy POTA hunting and contesting with my little G90 and my variety of antennas in my "arsenal". Thank you again for showing that the HOA need not be as limiting as it seems. 73, Rodney KJ5FWC
I have this antenna, and though I have never used it with the extension, it always performs great for me on 10-40. It’s a great POTA antenna. I usually have the feed point pretty close to the ground, 3-6 feet, and I have no problems making contacts in a sloping configuration.
Nice video Bob!!! The LEFS 8010 is my second-best Chameleon antenna, I have only deployed the 80m extension once and made one 80m qso. Excellent antenna, definitely worth the money. 73, Ammed KN6STX
Ammed, glad to see you have time to step away from your TDL to watch a video or two : ) Always appreciate hearing of your testing. Say you put a SS25 in the center hub while deploying the TDL...how did that work for you?
Great video Bob!!!! That's one heck of antenna to be able to get all those bands without a tuner. It would pair nicely with my 705. Have a great day Bob.. 73, Bill KC2KNA
Thanks Bill. This sat on my shelf far to long; I'm thrilled I finally had time to deploy it....what a great antenna. My challenge is I don't get to enjoy anything too long, because I have to move on to my next antenna test. Poor me, right?
I've done something very similar especially in the shape although I'm able to be up 25 ft in the air with 134 ft wire (home brew) and I get similar results as in your video.
@@Chameleon_Antenna Of course. And getting 12/17/30 with the wire long enough for 80 absolutely makes sense and is what I would have expected. I was just wondering if there was some special magic ya'll have put into that transformer that got all the bands between 10-40 with just the short wire. The docs on your site somewhat suggest the extension just adds 80 and that without the extension you get all the rest (Bob suggest that as well at about 2:40 though maybe he misread the docs as well)
@@dorvinion No magic but VERY well assembled! It’s all about how the toroidal is precisely manufactured which makes a HUGE difference on the overall SWR.
I have this antenna and it does work well for me. I would like to use it more often but I’m concerned about leaving it deployed long term. I’m currently using a HOA Buster Rain Gutter antenna. It works well enough but I don’t get out very far with it for obvious reasons. I like how you had it deployed from the top of your “flag pole”. Would you consider leaving the antenna setup like that permanently?
I would have no concerns about deploying it long term. I do have to be careful here because of my wind direction; the wind blows east at my house maybe 5% of the time, the rest is every other direction. So I deployed expective wind would never push my flag into my coax. The other option is to install the feed point of the antenna under my flag, then it doesn't matter what direction the wind blows. In the video when I am first lowering my Porta Mast you may notice I disconnect a wire from the front side of it under the flag...that is my antenna wire that I keep up all the time. Deploying the LEFS8010 from this point is an option.
@@HOAHamRadio Thanks for the reply and the recommendation. I'm always looking for a good way to deploy an antenna in my HOA. I have even less yard than you do so I have to be very creative. Always great to see your deployments to get ideas of what might work in my situation. 73 my friend...
Yes, you can use wsjtx from your rig. I only purchased the separate transmitters because I do some much long term (overnight) antenna testing; I wanted something that didn't tie up my transceiver.
Two questions: 1] How are your received signals always so clear of noise. Your neighbourhood doesn't look that much sparser than mine, but my efforts (admittedly mainly with verticals) are never so quiet, and it's one reason I'm still mostly portable instead! 2] Will you be at Hamcation?
Sometimes my day job drops mandatory requirements on me; as long as that doesn't happen, I plan to be at Hamcation Friday afternoon and Saturday. My noise floor isn't always this low. When I first showed 40 on my SDR it was pretty good; within an hour, 40 was trash and noisy. 80 stayed good for me all night long; probably the best work I've ever done on 80. This is the first wire I've evrn set up at 130'.
@@HOAHamRadio I hope to meet you in person, there, then. I'm making the schlep to escape the Minnesota cold 😀 Thanks for the answer, and for the great video, as always!

Go for it! You can angle your wires to fit in the space and they still seem to get the job done.

Exactly what I'm trying to do, show others they have options! Thanks for the view and comment and best of luck in your experiments.
Thanks, Bob. Great video as always. I didn’t have 3 EFHW antennas already, I’d get this too! Chameleon is da best.
Thanks for the view and comments.... The ratio of antennas I own to antennas I can actually deploy at one time is a bit unbalanced : )

: ) having too much fun with it to tear it apart. Thinking of doing some more testing in the next few weeks.

Love long wire antennas, they perform so well!
Wondering how it gets 12,17 and 30 w/o a tuner with the 63ft wire. In my experience that only gets 10/15/20/40

I wish I had a solid gold bar : ) It was stainless, 1/4" thick if I remember correctly.
