Tourette's syndrome discuss how they have overcome the symptoms of their
affliction - including the urge to make obscene gestures, involuntary
tics and compulsive swearing - to succeed in the workplace and spread
awareness about the condition. The interviewees also discuss the
prejudice they have faced from potential employers and how they have
refused to give up hope.

"..working with plants, because plants can't discriminate"... awww 😭😭 hugs & kisses, stay strong ok.
god bless the people with tourettes, their souls are really gold
Really, Eric? More than other people?
@@scronxThere’s no ‘god’ anyway, the ‘story’ is so flawed & has absolutely *no* proof behind it whatsoever.
World famous scientists (like Stephen Hawking and many others) are (‘were’ in Hawking’s case) are atheists. The reason is that science & mathematics have ‘problems’ or ‘questions’, which they then set out to actually *prove* and then demonstrate their work, which other scientists & the public agree are both correct & logical.
There’s absolutely *no* way that stories about ‘god’ which were made up *so* long ago that people didn’t know any better, and where the utter lack of scientific information/understanding/work/knowledge meant that almost nobody could refute them, except a handful of early famous philosophers & people with scientific understanding.
People who play team sports, as well as medical patients are a prime example of saying that a good outcome was down to ‘god.’ No it wasn’t, it was either *you* playing well that day, or it was the doctor that prescribed a known cure via medication, or a surgeon whose operation went according to plan!
An itch in the brain...that's how my son describes it. He has such a good attitude about his tourettes. I'm amazed by him. I wish people could just be themselves and not feel like they have to suppress the ticks or explain themselves.
I can relate on a very small level, I get bad episodes of restless leg syndrome which comes with an uncontrollable urge to twitch my feet in bed. I literally can not stop myself from doing it and once I do it's such an immense feeling of relief
25:06 - "A lot better than selling death insurance to people for a living. Cheers."
A genius!
Fascinating and beautiful at the same time. A great informative documentary. God bless you
I need a rubber phone lol
I love people with Tourette's I wish I had friends who would blurt out things like this all day they are all nice people too
“I want to work with plants because they don’t discriminate” Omg my heart!
I was smiling the whole time lol! Extraordinary and wondrous beings I should say.
There is room for everyone in this world. :)
Mr Andrews I would of stuck up for u no matter what people should not see u different
shywolf blood And you probably would “have” too not “of.”
So would I. Can't believe that some people can be so nasty. Hopefully there's more awareness now
Andrew is his first name. His second name is Joannou, so it’s ’Mr Joannou’, not Mr Andrews.
The “repeating, repeating, repeating, repeating” bit is honestly very relatable to me, as I have autism, of which echolalia is also a symptom, and I often repeat what people say.
Echolalia is present with ADHD as well, so I know what you mean. Some people think of us as ‘amusing mimics’ that can copy voices, accents, and sounds really well & instantly mirror them back.
What those people *don’t* realise is that we’re rarely ever doing it by choice, and we are not ‘performing monkeys’ that can just crack out a ‘party trick’ at a time they request it.
The teacher is such a nice guy....
When those of us who have Tourette syndrome go through the periods of not ticking it's because we are doing something that takes the focus our brains have off of our tics. I have several different things that I do that helps me to keep my Tourette syndrome under control so to speak. They are my stress relievers our distraction techniques for lack of a better way to describe it. Not any one always works for the most part hence having several different ones. I've also over the years learned to control my Tourette syndrome both mentally and physically. I do incorporate my tics into so called natural movements. It is physically and mentally and emotionally draining on a constant regardless. When I can sleep I do a lot never really get rested though and I can sleep for days weeks months at a time getting up only to use the restroom maybe grab a quick bite and a drink. It's painful having Tourette syndrome and mine has only gotten worse over the years so it takes more and more to control and deal.
Christina I also suffer from severe tourette's myself. I can relate to most of what you say. There's times where it's so taxing I feel exhausted. Then there's the social exhaustion of having to explain what's happening or apologize. I find myself getting triggered by documentaries like these and start ticking right along with the people in the show hahaha. It's cool to relate to other people who have tourette's, it feels good to not be alone.
Robin Hunt I agree it feels good not to be alone and to be able to relate to others with Tourette syndrome like us. Although I am alone now and have been for quite some time I can't seem to find anyone. I don't go out in public very much at all unless I have to. I have other health issues in which I'm dealing with now that have come upon me the past couple years alone I deal with each day that comes best I can. My good days are few and far between. And the heat is one of my worst enemies. I have a couple friends that I see and visit with even I can and a few I talk with online when we happen to catch each other. I don't know anyone else who has Tourette syndrome though and I wish I did because then maybe my life wouldn't be so rough as it seems to me. I don't know.
Christina ur awesome, and that's beautiful that u already know it.
Ur gonna find everything u need in life even 💖love💖 just because you deserve it☝️
Well done Brad. That’s awesome
People eventually become blind to colleagues disabilities. I have never met anyone with serious tourettes. But I am sure that if I was working with someone with it I know that I would eventually become oblivious to it. And it wouldn't be feigned. Just as if I was working with a paraplegic I would eventually become oblivious to the sight of them pushing themselves around an office in a wheelchair. The whole situation just becomes part of life's furniture eventually.
What a feel good program
So glad for these guys..
Rock on! You guys are people just like the rest of us! #nojudgmenthere👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Wow bring back memories use to work for the postal service worked on the OCR and DBCS wow crazy from kansas
Tourette syndrome Can be Difficult I have a Younger brother with it. He so funny at times. Sometimes I still Worry about him though.
Aww that’s sad. I saw a movie called In Front of the class. Was that based on you? I love that movie. I have been bullied a lot because I have a disability. FAS and head injuries from bashed in the head. I suffered a fractured skull and a badly broken jaw.
I have harm ocd too and Tourette’s but I just have a really bad shoulder tick and also leg tics
what a song ?14:58
What song is at 12:00
Anyone know the spoken word song when they cut to Andrews story?
the lesbian with tourettes worried me a bit when she said her reaction to a baby should be "oh, look at the baby, so sweet..." she said that her brain told her... "oh look at the baby, perhaps I should throw it off the fourth floor and watch it's head explode like a melon." Kind of gave me the creeps.
What she is expressing is what one would call an intrusive thought. Touretters like her and I don't have the facilities, especially in the basal ganglia, to "sort" through these intrusive thoughts. It is a very normal part of the spectrum of human thought and experience. Many people who are not conscious of intrusive thoughts have a difficult time with things like meditation because they experience intrusive thoughts that are violent, taboo, undesired, repulsive. I am around children often and have moderate/strong Tourettes, and have never hurt one. But because of my associated Obsessive compulsive disorder, I worry about the intrusive thoughts, and sometimes tic them aloud. It has nothing to do with what I intend to do or what I value. I very much identified with the scene where the teacher was answering questions and engaging that classroom of british kids. It is a gift to make funny faces and sing punchy tunes and clap and whistle with children because that is how I see my gifts for nurturing and empathy and energy.
omg it must annoy you so much if you have tourettes and you go into public and constantly have to say you have tourettes as people don't understand you .. :/
mirmirs It gets super tiring. I suffer from severe tourette's and you're constantly explaining yourself. I don't go out sometimes because I just don't want to have to deal with it.
same here, my tics have some rude language and they (tics)are quite loud.Going out in public is hard for me not only because its embarrassing and scary because some one could beat me up or something also my tics become more frequent but the point is that when your in public with strangers only a small percentage will understand that's why if we share videos like these, that group of people who don't understand will soon be able to understand what its like
Honestly when someone asks I explain gladly (most of the time) but if someone is rude and an asshole I might not. Then I just say "Tourettes. Google it"
@@TwitchyMoth I actually am quite happy and pleased to answer questions of those who legitimately want to be informed or those who understand my behavior as tourettes on their own.
@@suprastevio2264 yeah normaly I do too...but some dsys I just have enough already to deal with. I don't want to play teacher again.
What is the song played right after he talks about the bus incident then it shows him in the hallway doing the leg drops? I CANNOT find it anywhere. Typed out the lyrics in google like a maniac trying to find it. Even tried google listen or whatever its called.
Lyrics are,
"These actions are not sanctioned hesitations or significance is only tended methods of expression of my feelings and seeking out the instruments in biology and such I can live without apologies but thank you very much...for your concern."
It’s not a full song but what’s known as a ditty :- a small piece of music. Written by the late great Martha Farquer
Good people that work with that man
enlightening inspiring heartening, I like it
5:42
Has anyone ever seen a person with this condition ever yell out nice words ? Or did they grow up around people who curse? I don’t think they were born cursing unless they picked it up?
Bruni when i was born, i couldn't even speak at all. Ofcourse i can only speak for myself, the king of all lesbians ;)
10-15% of people with Tourettes swear. The rest doesn't. I for example don't swear as a tic. I mostly say stuff like "CATS! EVERYWHERE!" or "GAY ALIENS ON MY ROOF" just bullshit and sometimes repeading stuff.
I've always wondered ... if the world was completely devoid of taboo or offense, how would this coprolalia manifest itself? If it's a brain injury then it would exist no matter what, but how would it manifest?
Bless him your doing good gun be your self x
U'll still b you ,and different if u didn't have it,and but ov course you wouldn't change anything about yourself and your life ,for nothing.Everyone is special and awesome to me,when u get to know each other well b doing more working together instead of criticizing, the world really could b a better place that way...but I guess that's too easy for ppl,and that's what makes it easy to stay to myself, uninvolved 😪😏
you can be anything u want too be don't listen to anyone u can do it with gods help
Brad is too cool❤️
Andrew is an amazing guy!! In the uk there are so many lazy excuse making wastes of oxygen who will find any excuse not to work and he’s always tried to work with can’t be easy !! He’s an inspiration..king of the lesbians or not!!
why the hell was that cat in a kennel
Kyle Thomas kennel trained. People do this with dogs as well.
Brad is he the idea behind the movie the hard of teacher or something like that?
"Front of the class" is a movie about him
the small segments of song that play every now and again really interrupt the video and the lyrics are cringe worthy and so is the person singing them like that really ruins the video... example 39:35
5:43 LMAO Foored me!!!

Israel Kaʻanoʻi Kamakawiwoʻole who sang the song on here 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' passed away. He was morbidly obese and died from respiratory failure.
I wonder if he would try CBD it would cure this?
@Breanna Sacchetti Andrew had deep brain surgery and over 90% decrease in Tourettes
No entiendo el porque las malas palabras😨 que alguien me explique 😔

Has the person spoken to god
Sorry I ment will sorry I've got autism spelling bad
Hes so funny e cute!
The music in this documentary is fucking awfully put together
what if tourette's is when a feral soul that has found a way to barge in on your soul's body suit barges in....and the outbursts are the 2 souls fighting for control of that body suit constantly......
That thinking is exactly what's wrong with society... Tourette's syndrome is a disorder that affects the brain, in a very specific way that inhibits or removes the filter of thoughts and actions from being done. If we want to further a society that supports people with disabilities we must start by changing how we think about these disorders...
@@nickiminaji-k3r yeah ...lol...let's not think out-of-the-box anymore... let's just stick to what we already think we know.... that's a great way to make progress ......(rolls eyes)
@@cloud9photography126 You like replying to yourself? Lol you're quite the wanker 😂 How mad are you about a youtube comment

i have tourette sindrome.
Your wife is nice lady
Tourettes is so fuckin funny
OF COURSE they pick a (?) Turk to represent UK and a Jew for the US. OF COURSE! Just a coincidence!
Yes because that clearly is what this is all about
What a strange observation. Both countries are multi cultural.
So what
@@scronx The documentary was about people with Tourettes. Race and colour has nothing to do with that, therefore I see your comment as irrelevant and arguably racist. Maybe it was a coincidence, does it really matter?
@@Dominate955 Either you see it or you don't, friend. As I've indicated, it's much bigger than Tourette or this video.
