Jimi was simulating the sounds of bombs and screams, sounds of war. That is why this is such a historical performance. It was during the height of the US involvement in the Vietnam War. Jimi in an interview said he played the anthem the way the air in America was " the air is slightly static".

@@danreed5171 There was no 109th, it's the 101st Screaming Eagles. If heard of the show Band of Brothers, it was about a part of the 101st. 503rd Easy Company. They were a legendary group the helped liberate France, Belguim, Holland from the nazi's during WWII.
No, it wasn't the Superbowl...it was the biggest and most attended rock star-featured outdoor concert ever...Four days of live music..That was the weekend of Woodstock, in '69....And the interesting thing is, Jimi only came on stage on Monday of that weekend..the very last day, after most of the performances took place through Friday, Saturday and Sunday with all those crowds...By Monday, many folks had already left, and Jimi only played for a seemingly reduced audience of 30,000/40,000 tops...But fck! Those were the smart ones! The lucky ones! 😀

Look closely at his guitar: he was left-handed but used an upturned right-handed guitar. And yes this hymn that he plays is very symbolic because it takes place in the midst of the Vietnam War and represents the sound of bombs being dropped and the cries generated by the deaths of innocent people. It was then a big criticism of American anti-communist actions in Vietnam in the middle of the Cold War with the former USSR.
@5:26 when you said "that sounded familiar, right?" that because Jimi played a few bars of "Taps" as part of his Nation Anthem version. In case you didn't know that is played at funerals for military veterans.

So during the performance he is tuning and "detuning" his guitar in order to distort notes. As someone already pointed out he played the guitar upside down and restrung the string in the opposite order because he was left handed and there were not left handed guitars at the time. The reason there were so many people there is because it was more than just a concert, it was a movement and a protest of the Vietnam War. Many people who showed up did not have tickets. The farm where it took place was just over run by people. It was basically a free for all and vary chaotic but not in a dangerous way.
His strings were in standard order....Low E on top.
Jimi's birthday is coming up! It's on the 27th. If he'd lived, he'd be eighty years old.

Keep in mind that this was like 18 years BEFORE what you saw Stevie Ray Vaughan do, so in 1969 this was truly revolutionary, pioneering guitar playing.

400000 people all gathered in one place for three days and they did it peacefully. It was, as Jimi said, beautiful.
This was the last day of woodstock. It had been raining and most of the people had already left, they didnt know jimi hendrix was going to be there. it was about 8 am when hendrix took the stage, People were still asleep and were woken up by a screaming guitar singing the national anthem.
The screeching and aound effects are jimis protests to the war. You can clearly hear the dive bombs, planes and explosions. One of a kind. There has never been anyome better than Jimi.
Just the two bars of "The Last Post/TAPS" is genius,,,,,,,,,utter genius.

I saw Jimi twice in Houston. I am 69 yrs old. I know all about Jimi in 191st Airborne.
Yea Jimi was keeping his guitar in tune.Jimi was playing the past the present and the future.Jimi Hendrix did enlist in the military at 19, in 1961, and served as a paratrooper of the 101st Airborne Division in Kentucky. He joined after being caught by the police twice for stealing cars, and was given the option between joining the army and going to jail. He chose the former. After serving for a year, he was discharged.More than 400,000 young people made their way to a dairy farm in the town of Bethel, New York, for the Woodstock Music and Art Fair. The event was billed as "three days of peace and music" and featured 32 of the most iconic artists in American music history.

Woodstock was a festival that went crazy. First they lost the place for the festival but farmers let them use their land and they thought it would be 200K but atleast 400K showed up and it was an epic festival and if you don't know the artists you have some greats to discover.
I love that I came to watch some BTS by you when you started reacting to them and loved your reactions but then you also do other reactions like this and Vaughan . I like Henrix but this is not my favorite thing though from him and not maybe what I would have recommended as a first reaction.
Anyway I love a lot of music in different genres but my heart is mostly in rock and blues and metal also punk and mostly older things lots of music from the 70's and older.

Memories! I was not at Woodstock, but I remember reading about it in the newspaper and seeing it on the news (I was 9 years old). I did go see the documentary about 10 years later. His performance was very controversial as Cavett (interviewer said). Woodstock was suppose to be a low key event held in a field and tickets were sold (About 25,000). Word spread, and well, screw tickets. Roads were filled with traffic, so people just parked their cars along the side of the roads (and at times IN the road) and walked. Jimi had a choice of prison or the army. (during the 60's this was common. there was also a draft going on). Jimi chose the the army (101st Airbourne is army).
Paratrooper Hendrix broke his ankle on a jump. He met Billy Cox there, he was Jimi's bass player after Noel Redding . Billy played on machine gun , and he was at Woodstock.

So im a 33 year old guy of the pasty caucasion persuasion. And I didnt understand what Jimi was doing by wailing away during the anthem until right now today. Imagine what that song represented to adults in 1969. This during americas first real modern public confrontation with a disparity between the races in the country. So for Jimi to go up there and make, what was at the time by most peoples standards, inaudible noise, during the song that is by design and definition patriotic to a fault, really sent a message. I feel almost dumbfounded by the performence. Its another moment in the catagory of like realizing theres secrets being kept from us about the events of the past all the time. Wood stock was the largest gathering of people and rock related artists in history up to that point. Woodstock lasted several days (I'm thinking 4 days but that guess may be off a day). By 1969, Jimi had become the highest paid rock artist on the planet. With that kind of popularity, Jimi was the closing act of Woodstock, scheduled to be the last act on the last night of Woodstock. However, the acts before him were way over allotted times. By the time Jimi came up to close the concert, it was the next morning. By this time, many people had left the outdoor concert, others were packing up to leave. So the audience for Jimi totaled in the hundreds not thousands. Those remaining saw the best live Hendrix show that I have ever seen, and I've seen numerous taped Hendrix performances.
Do yourself a favor and get ahold of the entire Hendrix performance at Woodstock. Star Spangled Banner is just a small part of this fantastic show which is available on DVD. RUclips may have video of entire performance but not certain of that. BTW....there is a movie called Woodstock, which shows elements of all the performers including a part of Jimi's performance but the movie doesn't show even most of the Hendrix performance at Woodstock. You have to search for video of just the Hendrix portion of Woodstock,
Yes he's tuning it real time because when he hits that bar on his guitar it stretches the strings out of tune and he puts it right back in tune. You her bombs dropping an ambulance and even a baby crying

Actually he was never in Korea, he was in Ft Campbell KY. He joined because he got in trouble trying to steal cars with a friend or something and was given the choice of 2 years in jail or go into the military. He hated it and was a way less than stellar soldier, and got out due to an ankle injury from practicing parachute jumps.
Jimi never left the U.S. when he was in the military.
@@bzbzob Yes! That's where & when his friendship with Billy Cox began and even though Jimi wasn't fond of his time spent in the service, it was a really important time in his life. When Jimi parted ways with the Army and Billy, he made a promise to him that when he got something really good together, he would send for Billy to step in as his bass player. He kept his promise to him.

Jimi had very strong fingers & large Hands which is what made him soooo different . He would sometimes tune his Guitars down a whole step when he played a particular song. Which was why he`d always ask the audience to give him a moment to tune up before he played in his concerts. As a Guitar player my self I know that when you tune a Fender Strat guitar down a whole step the way Jimi did on this rendition of the Star Spangled Banner, and the song is played in the key of "E" ,coupled with all the string bending & the jerking of his tremolo bar , those strings are going to go out of tune. Especially that doggone "E" string & sometimes the "B"string neighbor! Thus the reason for the constant tuning in this rendition... but JIMI was slick with it .He would wait until he would finish a fraise ending in "E" then adjust his High (open) E string. Sometimes he would have to adjust/tune his "B" string also. When Linda Keith first saw him in the "Cafa Wha", & the way his fingers & his hands move up & down on a Guitar, she knew he wasn`t ordinary. She knew he was SPECIAL! His gift from GOD were his Hands! He was born to play a Guitar.
If you can imagine 400,000 people going to one concert, it must have been a hell of a concert. Nothing but great music and impossible living conditions what three days you got to see the movie!
This was not improvised. He had been working out the details for this performance back in ‘66, when he heard The Silver Apples recording a very similar in context version of the star spangled banner. Every note and tuning is thought out over a few years.

It will blow your mind, also some quick facts about Jimi, no lessons, played guitar upside down because he was left handed, was an airborne ranger, played guitar for little Richard and the isle brothers and made Eric Clapton who at the time was considered the best guitarist walk off stage and died at the age of 27

101st Airborne is the Army's elite fighting force. Often called the greatest fighting force in history.
If you really want to see him play check Hendrix video HEY JOE the black and white version and watch him play with his mouth and tongue and behind his back. He's the greatest rock guitarist OF ALL TIME and he died at 27.

He was re-tuning because when you use the whammy bar it knocks your ax out of tune so he's trying to get it back in tune on the fly.

Jose Feliciano was probably the first well known artist who played the national anthem in an unorthodox manner, at a major league baseball game in 1968, he received very heated criticism for it.

Jimi Hendrix was in the 101 Army Airborne (Helicopters) based in Fort Campbell, KY. Jimi hurt his leg jumping out of helicopters and was given a medical discharge. Jimi then joined the band of Little Richard, a black pioneer of early rock and roll. Little Richard played what was called the 'chitlin circuit', a tour of black joints in the southern US performing early rock and roll. Little Richard was a flamboyant performer but he tells the story that Jimi would upstage him with Jimi's guitar playing, so Little Richard, the star of the group, had to tell Jimi to cool down his on-stage theatrics.
When Jimi was in the military, they jumped out of airplanes. They do not parachute out of helicopters, they repel to the ground on ropes. To this day, they still parachute from planes.
Jimi was a member of The Screaming Eagles Paratroopers out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
He was in the army and the national anthem he did was a protest for the Vietnam war he was against it he is the best guitarist in the universe and a hero to me and millions of guitarist everywhere

using whammy bar in this type of guitar usually affects tuning. No wonder he had to correct his tuning during performance, he was doing it constantly. Nowadays we have mechanisms blocking strings to avoid it

Jimi left America because it was immersed in the romance of Modernity. He went to Europe and put Postmodernity on everyone's dial. Eric Clapton was dethroned. The Beatles, obsolete.
