Hope there was gas money with it
And some new drill bits!
It actually reads: best in live! Maybe the writer is hoping that he’ll get off yootoob and go to LIVE streaming! 😜
This guy has made me fall in love with sailing even tho I’m a poor college student who can’t even afford a dinghy 😭, this summer I’ll hopefully be learning to sail. Thank you for helping me discover this interesting hobby ❤️
I was where you were once. Hang in there, work hard, and you’ll be the captain of your own boat soon.
Sam always has that big smile because hes living his dream. Safe travels 🙏
I find it very refreshing to see a down to earth sailing channel. Keep the adventures going, you don’t need to be posh to be sexy.
You make sailing around the world look fun and simple. That's gotta be a rare talent
You have the most enjoyable videos about sailing I've found.
I had the absolute pleasure of motoring up beside Sam in his pickled herring on Thursday in Malta was a once in a life time experienced being so close to the legend himself
I wish you a safe journey to Croatia!!!
I have lived there for over 5 years and I LOVE the place!!
I hope you like it too…
Greetings, Henk, from the Netherlands.
Phenomenal content you got there chief! For someone who loves the sea, but unfortunately will never be able to do what you do, your channel provides me with endless hours of gleefulness :)
Sam enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing. Keep them coming.
Savvy navvy is a good alternative to Navionics... it is slightly more money, but it gives little extra like working out the best time to make the passage... by currents, tides etc.
Take care and God bless brother 💙
Thanks for commenting. I was going to get navionics but screw that after seeing this. I'll check out Savvy Navvy. Thanks dude
@@marklivingston7324 Also check out Orca Copilot
@@marklivingston7324 Savvy navvy is lacking in functions... Navionics charges 50 bucks for the ENTIRE mediterranean area, per year. That's almost for free.
Not anymore unfortunately. They divided the med into 3 subscriptions for $50 each now. I wasn’t impressed with the savy navy or orca charts either.
Yay! Actual sailing! Better than girlfriends in bikinis and tourist videos of streets
so happy you and pickle are back Sam love the auto pilot piano song 💙
Thanks!
Another great SHS video update. Thanks for sharing Sam!
What a cute little air con!
“That is a great looking log” lol. Almost as good as watching holes getting drilled 😉😎
Amazing. You two are inspirational ❤
Absolutely love you! Keep rocking Sam!
Sam, I love the mods you made to the cockpit...and the AC!!! You're sailing in style!
Right on!
Brilllllliant Sam - thanks for sharing ⛵️ 👍
Happy to see ya again. Blow wind blow. Will follow and try and support some of the adventures
love your content, Sam!
Another great Sam Homes adventure
Great video Sam.
Gorgeous sunset for you!
The note says "Dear Mr. Holmes, we're reaching out because you may be interested in an extended boat warranty.."
Nice to know that somebody finally managed to get to the port of San Marino. 😂
Lol.
Happy for you Sam...... Oriental is a long ways away
👍👍⛵️planning and preparation....
Thanks for sharing the peaks and troughs of your sailing adventures. Stay well and passionate. hello from Landlubbers in Auckland, New Zealand : - )
Some of us were sailing the Hauraki gulf when you made this comment.
Sam is one of my fav Emo bands
Cheers mate
Back to paper charts!
Paper charts are expensive, especially if you are cruising across multiple charts
Sam, we have a similar AC unit on our Aloha-26, we put the output through our dorade, ours is the same diameter so I just use a few strips of duct tape.. coolness
. love the cannisters jam .
Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence.
Luv dem keyboard riffs, man
That marina is so nice! 13:00
I like this channel a lot. It has to do with real sailing - not many sailing channels do.
I guess if you're on the move it's difficult to stop and argue you case for being 'unlimited' charts when all you want is to move on. You should try to argue it though (research applicable dates, etc etc. and pound the facts with their Customer Service).
If that fails getting a memory stick with sufficient storage may be the way to go, provided you understand your immanent need to back up those files somewhere (maybe cloud etc). Then updates need to be done every so often to accommodate shoreline and sea changes.
Good luck.. watching your channel it great!
Great one!
Thank you! Cheers!
By a chart plotter and you find you are back with Navionics 😮
The sunset at 8:35 is INSANE 🌞
Sam...get 60 metres of chain (no rope) and an electric windlass. Your will be so much easier....Bill
Velcome to our beautiful Slovenia
Everyone is getting greedy Sam.. Like software, used to buy software, like Quicken, which would last for several years. Now you have to buy annually.. Stay safe
Compared to buying PAPER charts in the old days (and the hassle of keeping them up to date), the 50 bucks for the ENTIRE Mediterranean is a steal really.
7:50 Sam Holmes jazz music!
When the anchor is difficult to pull up by hand use a snatch block near the bow to keep the anchor rode off the cabin and put the anchor rode around one of your jib sheet winches and you can winch the anchor up easily and even use your motor if you like. I put a video on my channel showing how
Halyard winch on the mast even better.
I like your videos and you have great patients. May christ Jesus bless your sailing and keep you safe.
3,704th tag-along view gonna happen sometime soon... good stuff.
You are now really “logging” up the miles!
Navionics is driving me crazy. It’s awfull with having to sign in.
Hi mate. I’ve always wondered what the big, thin spool thing is at the back of pickled herring? I thought at some point I’d see you use it but I don’t think I have? It looks about an inch and a half deep with a white sort of strap coiled onto it, about 2 feet diameter. Good luck with the trip, always look forward to your adventures.
Stern tie?
What is your ground tackle setup? We’re refitting an ericson 27 for cruising and I’m a little concerned about weight distribution carrying the recommended 300ft of chain
Ah finally a nice haircut ❤
Cm93+ charts for the win
Sampson cut his hair and Delilah said "enjoy your pickle big sailor boy"
Sam, give Orca a call - quite a modern solution to charts, and you can display it on your tablet
Are you planning on stopping in or near Valencia, Spain ?
19 knots gusting to 20 - wow, that’s specific 😂
Think that was meant to be 21...
20 knots is very comfortable sailing, ideally 25 on a monohull!
Inflation is transitory 😂
Savvy Navvy is IMO much better than Navionics. The course planning it absolutely great, it interpolates tides and I thin the charts are more clear.
I don’t remember the keel type of your boat, but would heaving to be an option for you? Never worked with my fin/wing keel, but my full keep boat it was a game changer. . .
Heaving to works great on my boat too
Hi Sam, I noticed you’re also a skilled piano player where are you with that?
I made my wind vanes out of Marine ply, they last forever, although I did have spares.
Nice
You may have seen my inlaws in San Marino! Did you go all the way to the top?
The horses have runny noses!
For hand hauling in the anchor. There ought to be a way using a halyard to raise the rode up in the air in a pulley, so you can just use your weight to pull down the chain/rope. Maybe some kind of ratchet, or easy lock off. And of course it has to drop in the locker and not pull up against the side of the boat. (So a bracing line (or two) from the bottom of the pulley to a cleat(s) to keep the whole thing in position.) Just thinking out loud. Figure it out, call it the SamLass, patent it then let us know how much money you make.
Mast winch? That's what I use
"That is a great-lookin' log."
10:56 "And now I'm in a pickle"
I bet Paper charts and cruising guides are looking good right now
Not really, how do you get detailed info in rough weather while single handed using charts? Not to mention the expense
@@user-od1dt3sd8hbeen doing it for many years, it's just a generation thing... If you can't get immediate information by a single touch on a screen, then .....PANIC !!
Nice piano interlude! I was going to ask which patron played that, and then I got the live view. How much power does that thing suck out of the house bank?
I only brought human powered instruments with me.
Its running on 4 AA batteries and only needed to replace them once in the last 4 years
@@samholmessailing wow! That's fantastic! I used to have a little Casio SK-1 that I carried around for noodling out ideas, but I could never actually *play* on it. I never did find a full-sized keyboard that didn't need 110VAC. Maybe one day I'll get a boat big enough to take along a Baldwin 9' grand! :-D
Hey Sam, what sea sickness medication do you use? And how long before sailing do you take it? Thanks
I haven’t taken any in years but in the past I’ve used dramamine, bonine or scopolamine
3:34 rear view mirror so you can see forward from the companionway below?
Yea
If you ever make it up to south bay California I would love to meet you and buy you lunch...you have a awesome channel
Maybe one day!
Nice video (y). What keyboard do you use to play on board?
yamaha pss a50
@@samholmessailing Thank you very much for your answer. I like playing Lyra-8 by SOMA Electronics when sailing.
Gave up on the Med. Annoying to heartbreaking, every time.
Gday Sam. Wot is the name of ur wireless wind sensor up the mast? I can't find it anywhere.
Calypso but I don’t recommend the wireless one.
@@samholmessailing Thanks for reply Sam. Appreciated
Sam do you carry a storm jib? Sorry if this is a rehash of an earlier discussion. I have Pickles little sister a ‘87 CD26, but rehabbing it little by little. Would love to follow your steps but will probably not make it past Bermuda. :)
I don't. But I can roller reef my headsail.
Would love to see you throw out a fishing line every once in a while. I enjoyed it in your older videos!
Maybe one day!
4:55 chain over railing?
Hey Sam , wondering, have you ever been to Cape Town, South Africa?
I have not
Dear Sam , I'm afraid you've mistaken Rimini for San Marino. Rimini (Italy) is the town where you were while San Marino is about 23 km from there up the hills.
I meant to say Rimini was the Marina I arrived at, but then I rode my bike to San Marino, but it was pretty far and I just got to the edge of San Marino and turned around so I guess most the video was really from Rimini you’re right.
Zero breeze sounds rather loud?
So much for weather forecasts in that neck of the world. At least in my Caribbean area its quite consistent from the east trade winds.
I’m constantly sailing along the croatian coast.. the bigest problem for me are the unstable winds.. most pf the year, you have to trim your sails every 5-10min 😅
At 0,:57. "wrong rope", there are no ropes on board except for the painter!
Bell rope
May anyone explain to me how sailors can tell where they are without avionics? Specially the times well before accessible technology.
Maps, of course, but what about when there are no landmarks in sight?
Celestial Navigation with sextants and nautical almanacs and math
What did the note say?
Why do you Americans always use so much rope and take up so much swinging room? Please buy some chain and learn to anchor. Signed, angry Italian boater.
Skipper!
😁
Navionics has gone out the window for me. Not having that money leech in my boat again.
What ya replace it with?
@@1badsteed I am going OpenPlotter with o-charts for now.
say hi to igor stropnik in croatia!
Hey Sam I thought you stopped in Greece!? I don’t see a Greek flag
Im in greece now. Sailing to Malta now
Is this a different boat?
This is the cape dory 28 ive been sailing for the past 3 or 4 years.
Which boat does Sam prefer to sail? The Cape Dory or Bayfield ???
Best sailing channel on you tube than you
@1:23 Sam earned himself a beer and a "Burek" (or Börek), best i can tell. Sam is that correct?
Sam, when you were 3 miles from shore with too little wind, why didn't you choose to just motor in from there so that you could get some sleep? Was it because of the engine mount issue, fuel levels, or some other reason?
BOO-dek 😎
@@smallgovisbest Good question, I think it's just that he motors when he really has to. It's a slippery slope, once you start doing that. No wind, I'll just motor. Head wind, I'll just motor, etc.
No motor mounts too
Navionics is quickly losing my business… and I don’t think there’s any competition, so I may just go back to paper charts.
I've heard they are expensive too up front. Any experience with them?
@@1badsteed yeah, they're not "cheap", but they don't *vanish* if you fail to throw more money at the cartographer every month, and they don't stop "working" if your power all goes out; and IMHO *most* maps are not going to be inaccurate enough to need "updating" very often, if ever. And FWIW, Navionics isn't 100% accurate either. People hit stuff all the time that *wasn't on the charts*!
Anyway, I'm quite ambivalent about it all, but paper just *feels* better on a sailboat. ;-)
If you're on the fence or even just curious, buy one or two charts, a nice dividers, a parallel ruler, a protractor, and try them out!
Does anyone know the weather app he is using?
The weather apps I use are LuckGrib and windy
@@samholmessailing thanx! I use windy too, but allways searching for other apps.. and double checking the forecast on kore than just one 😅
Your own piano?
