Great video and I totally agree on the machines. I have a CM350, the Scan n Cut 2 that I’ve had for years. Except for the auto adjusting blade I really see no advantages to the DX series. From all the videos I’ve watched it seems much more complicated and I’ve even seen experts who say the 350 cuts out intricate designs more accurately. I seldom add the border and I’ve had it even cut out the individual whiskers on Tim Holtz Crazy Dog stamped images. I also use it to cut tiny label bands for my 1/12 scale miniatures. I previously had a Cricut Explore Air and feel like it doesn’t even compare to the flexibility and ease of use of the Scan n Cut.

sorry, not sure what folder you saw in the video. can you explain? the stamps are on a clear sheet that came with the stamps, not sure if that's what you saw.
Awesome. Are you looking at the new fancy one that is quiet or the earlier 350? (See my comparison chart at reddinup.com/scanncut/). ~ Thanks so much for watching!
Oh congrats on getting the scan n cut! And have fun on organizing -- I have an A to Z Craftroom Organizing series for ideas! See reddinup.com/a-to-z/. Thanks so much for watching!
I show the 650 (over $500) but I tell people that if you are using it just to stamp and cut the shapes, the new SDX will work for you. Here is a comparison chart -- reddinup.com/scanncut/. Notice the SDX85 is the lowest price and has 251 built in shapes. It will work well for you! Here is one on Amazon for $299 -- amzn.to/3XDzoXO. They can be found at JoAnn's, Kohl's, and Home Depot too.
I have been researching the Brother Scan NCut machine for a few month. I have a Cameo that I love. So I haven’t been sure that I need the Scan NCut. After watching several of your videos I have decided I do. Thank you so much for helping me make a decision.
I'd say that if you have a Cricut, the Brother machine & software mechanically work very similarly to the Cricut. So if you are comfortable with your Cricut, then the Brother will come easy to use. But keep in mind that they do different things. The Brother's built-in scanner is amazing for cutting around images. And while there are many built-in images, but I still use my Cricut for images and welding letters for scrapbook titles.
Yes, there must be a solid lined image for the scan n cut to follow. I have used a pencil to connect the lines, then it will see the image as a solid object. Then you can erase the pencil line after it cuts. Also, it needs good lighting. ~ Thanks for watching!!
Oh, be sure to heat the embossing powder to melt it before running thru the machine. I just like the look, adds a little extra thickness to the border. Totally not needed for the scanning and cutting process.
I have the Scan N Cut 2. The last time I tried to cut out a stamped image it didn't go well. I'm not sure where I went wrong. I use my machine so little that I feel I have to re-learn the steps all over again. I will be sure to watch your other videos to refresh my memory. TFS
The stamped image MUST be a complete solid line. If you have any little crack in the line, just use a pencil to lightly draw the solid line. Yes, watch my videos to see some great tips! We're all learning together! ~ Thanks for watching!!
@@TerryCowans It is. I don’t understand why, after scanning the machine will pick some images and cut them into pieces. The rest is cut on the outtter edge. Specialty paper is too expensive for this waste.
Pretty well. I increase the distance around the words to help it cut around them. I have also used vellum or a clear sheet to draw the outline, scan that, then remove the sheet and cut.
The newer Brother Scan N Cut (DX models) have a "HALF CUT" feature that will allow you to automatically cut sticker paper. See this video -- ruclips.net/video/Frp99b-AM0Q/видео.html -- where she printed on mat sticker paper, scans, then half cuts so that it does not cut thru the page. On the older machines you can decrease the pressure and test that you only cut so far into your paper. The scan n cut is excellent at scanning your images and cutting around them. You can specify the distance of the border around your image too.
Terry Thank you for the amazing videos. It's hard to find an explanation using the Brothers N Cut. Your videos are very helpful. Please, help me. If I will use online software from Brothers, can the N Cut software recognize the page, maybe remember? For instance, I will have 5-10 identical sheets of paper/stickers with the same design? I would like to cut 5-10 pages remotely using the software. Thank you.
@@TerryCowans I see. I need a scan first. Thank you. If will have prepared 2 separate layers - the 2 images by themselves and white border with 3mm. After, will upload the image to ScanNcut software. Will be an accurate and consistent cutting from the Brothers Scan Ncut? Or do I need to create a line around the white edge, if I want to see cutting edges look identical for 2 images? I am asking because I like a lot of how Ncut works, how smart, quiet and fast this machine is, and try to figure out how the software works. I can't find a lot of videos on RUclips and I am glad I found your amazing channel.
@@Marina-om1xy you are sweet! Like the 2 separate layers idea. You will like the software. I like how easy it is to send it from the scanner to your computer and back again.
Do you have to hook up to a computer to use the scan and cut? My mom wants one but doesnt have a computer to hook it up to. Like I have to hook my cricut up to my computer to get the image to cut or draw.
It is not required. You can do editing on the scanned image on the computer and it's easy to send back and forth. But you do not need a computer. It has many common built in shapes. And the scanning is wonderful.
Seems like a lot just to make a few tags. I’m sure there are lots of other uses too, but too expensive for me . I made some cute Christmas tags on my printer, looked just as good. But what ever floats your boat!
@@TerryCowans you can say that again. I started painting and I have purchased more things than I’ll ever use. I really don’t need another hobby. lol. If I was still teaching or working with children I would probably buy a scan and cut. But I’d have to hide it from my husband. lol
@Lois Bowers You can use it to cut images from designer paper instead of fussy cutting, as well as all of your other stamped images for card making or scrapbooking; much more than tags. There are also images built into the machine that you can cut out, too. If you use it often, it will pay for itself the first year. 😊✌
I want a sdx125e or cricut what is your opinion I am not computer savvy at all.i am looking to make car decals, stickers and iron on for shirts.this looks so simple compared to cricut.whats the difference is it major.im not looking to sell things it's personal use.
The Brother does not require a computer, so that's a plus. It has many built in basic shapes. If there are specific graphics that you like, I would suggest the Cricut machine. The Cricut Joy is wonderfully easy to use (with a phone app), but if you need to cut large images, I would suggest the Cricut Explore Air machine. My recommendation is to look over the shapes that you want to use, then decide if you have the patience to learn how to get the shape into the Brother machine, or use the Cricut software (can be your phone or tablet or computer) to cut your shapes.
Hi Terry I came across your video. I have a scan an cut but don't know how to use it. I was sold when I was told all the images I would get. But I have to up load or down load. I don't know how to use it. Do you have any info how I can do this. It would help alot other than that it sit there 2years now. Thank D Bessette
Nice to meet you Deborah! There are many images built into the machine. See this video: Built in images -- ruclips.net/video/fMb89iyaCM0/видео.html Plus you can load images to the machine. There is also software you can connect to your machine. I'll do a video soon about these features! Thanks for the ideas! Here's my ScanNCut Playlist -- ruclips.net/video/fMb89iyaCM0/видео.html -- for many other ideas!
I have a CM250 and I HATE it! Always chops up my images. I think I need a newer one. Yours seems to work great. Not only does it cut up the images, it won’t select everything on the outside of the image. So frustrating. Then the paper never sticks good either. I think there are better mats now.
Oh, I'm sorry to hear you are having troubles with your machine. I would hope even their early models would scan nicely! The mats are always loosing their sticky (same for Silhouette and Cricut machines). I use scotch tape to hold my paper in place! Now, the image does need to be a complete line, so use a pencil to fill in any missing gaps, then you can erase the pencil marks. Give it a try!
I have trouble getting my CM250 to work right as well, but I think it's just me. My biggest issue is the blade. I also don't like the mats. Tape sounds like a good solution.
The scan n cut will go around the image. It does not need to be embossed like I did, but it does need to be connected. A trick is to draw a solid line with pencil around your disconnected word. Then you can scan, cut, then erase the pencil line. Hope this helps!
@@TerryCowans You gave a good tip! My question was oriented to the stamp itself, i bought the Stamp kit, and i tought i could make regular stamps (bas-relief/on-relief with separated letters) and I´m finding out after installing it today that the stamps are more "simple silicon stencils" than real stamps
@@zinc438 I have not played with the stamp kit. I need to check that out! Years ago I cut a stamp using my cricut. It was a silicone material that a deep blade could cut. Haven't tried the Scan N Cut setup.
Lovely video very well done. I checked your chart of the scan n cut machines but mine is not on your list it is the very first one made CM550 and I don’t use it very much because it doesn’t scan very well or maybe it’s just me plus mine is not Bluetooth you need to use card to download images. I was very upset with Brother because after I bought it they came out with the ones that have Bluetooth built in. I live in Canada so you can imagine the price I paid for it. Do you know anything about this machine I am Very frustrated with it. Have a wonderful day.
Thank you so much for your kind words! That chart is the most recent one on the Brother website, and I swear it changes all the time! Not quite sure of their numbering system, or when they drop off the models! I'm just familiar with the 350 and 650, so I'm not much help. I will, however, say that you need a SOLID line around the image and a well-lit area for the scanner to do it's work. When I first started I didn't realize this, and I wanted to throw it out of the window because I could scan something three times and get three different results. I hope this helps! Good luck!!
Also, I found on the Brother site that the 550 is discontinued -- see www.brother-usa.com/products/cm550dx. You might contact Brother and see if their offer anything for upgrading the machine. I know when Cricut had a model that was not printing correctly, they took care of it with customers. Just a thought!
@@dianestarr9612 it's something that I have noticed. Don't make sense, but if I make sure I'm working in a well lit space, it scans better. My imagination?!?
As long as you heat emboss to fully melt the powder, it should not do anything to the machine. I would not want dust particles to get inside the machine. But you can wipe off the scanner, I'll do a video soon to show how! I wanted to wait on the machine until they got the kinks worked out! And I wanted to hear if the auto blade would work well. ~ Thanks for watching!
I am so glad I stumbled onto your channel! I have a scan & cut I haven't used once. Thanks to you I'm fixing to get started. Going back thru all your videos. New subscriber 😃
I bought mine a few years ago on sale from Costco online. I'm not a member of Costco so I think I paid like 7%more than a member would. I believe I paid $174 or there about. So definitely look at those wholesale clubs to get the best price! At the time I did the math and it was cheaper to pay the 7 % than to get the membership just for the machine but it may be worth it in a different situation so definitely check!!
Here's another video -- ruclips.net/video/qzQRISfQ6JA/видео.html They are all suggesting to get the thinnest type you can find. You must use the DEEP blade too.
Great video. Is your Scan n Cut a specific model .... are there different models to choose from. I can see that it would eventually be a huge savings not buying the dies!
Thank you! I have the 650 model, it was very expensive and I wish I bought the cheaper version since I mostly use it for scanning and not the built-in images. Especially when you can bring images into their software to us. I highly recommend the 350, less images, but the scanner is just as wonderful. See my chart at "reddinup.com/scanncut/patterns/" for the different models and prices as of 2020.
I have been reading comments about this machine and people say the mat does not stick very well and it’s hard to find more mats. Have you had any trouble?
The mats, just like the Cricut, do stop being sticky. It's due to the paper fibers get stock to it. If you put it in the sink and wash with a little dish soap and let it dry, it will get some stickiness back. I also use some scotch tape to hold my paper in place too. ~ Thanks for watching!
I’m a science teacher. I just bought a ScanNCut to have the machine cut all my paper models and what not. It is a pain to cut stuff that doesn’t have straight edges for a full class of 30 students by hand 😅
Hi Terry, I will be purchasing one of these for something similar as to what you did in this video, except I will be cutting them directly on the outline - 0.00. I wanted to ask, how clean is the cut when you set it to 0.00? Does it cut it right on the line exact? Thank you!
I recommend the CM350. All models will cut stamped images. Here's a chart that summarizes the models & features. I've never found the DX85C model for sale. I made this chart after reviewing the Brother website. My chart -- reddinup.com/scanncut/patterns/ I do no believe the extra cost of the DX is worth the price difference (detects thickness & quieter). Plus the DX is larger and newer, they may need to fix the problems with it (mat & scanning issues).
I had to translate ... thank you! Hello, to recover the iron once it ran out of glue, you can do the following: leave the iron overnight with dish soap, the next day you wipe it with a cloth and with a spatula you begin to remove all the old glue, then you clean it well so that there is no glue left. Once dry, apply an adhesive felt, called ZIG JUMBO GLEU, pass it over the entire plate as if it were a felt, only once, otherwise it will be left with a lot of glue. Now you can use your iron as if it were new. I hope it works for you

Hi Terry, do you think the less expensive models cut as well? I have wanted one for many years for my card making. I usually fussy cut my images because the price of the dies runs into a lot of money and I would rather have another stamp set. I’m so confused lol.
Hi Gayle, thanks for watching! I do think the less expensive models cut just as well. I know many folks with the 350 and they are very happy with it. I'm trying to figure out if the new models (DX version) have all the kinks worked out. From the reviews, people like them too. And you are right, fussy cutting around your stamps works too! It's even relaxing! Lol!
I hear ya. Stick with it. The line is exact, so a lot of what we can is jagged. Tell the border to be "0.04" or more, it will smooth the line a little.
Hey, Terry I need a question answered. Purchased a 125 scan and cut. What I was wondering is: can I trace around some Tim Holtz die cuts, scan them, then cut them out of poster board or thin chipboard? Thanks.
I have not tried that, but I'm sure that would work! Remember to trace using a dark marker on light paper for best scanning results. It also works to trace around any stamped image too! Sometimes I have used tracing paper to make the shape, then I scan and save on my machine for future use! Good luck, let me know how it turns out!

Thanks for watching! I like to emboss not just because it makes the black border a little brighter, but when I color in the images, there is a little lip that will hold in the watercolor paint or marker color. Once you start, it's hard not to emboss it! Ha!
Cricut cannot scan. They have an option where you can use the their mobile app to take a picture of the mat, but good luck with it, I found it very frustrating. ~ Thanks for watching!
@@TerryCowans I just attempted that process of scanning in some owls I colored in, took them into photoshop to turn to black, and then to illustrator to make an svg, and then to sure cuts a lot 5, and the cut was off on my test. I have been trying to figure out whole told me I needed 1 of these...put it on my favs list on hsn
Awesome. Are you looking at the new fancy one that is quiet or the earlier 350? (See my comparison chart at reddinup.com/scanncut/). ~ Thanks so much for watching!
Just got my Scan n Cut but haven’t used it yet am reorganizing my craft room first.
Oh congrats on getting the scan n cut! And have fun on organizing -- I have an A to Z Craftroom Organizing series for ideas! See reddinup.com/a-to-z/. Thanks so much for watching!
Love my scan and cut have the 350 works great Dies are so expensive saves a lot of money in the long run so we can buy more stamps lol
Exactly! Lol ~ Thanks for watching!!
I need your help. Which is the right model number ? I want to stamp on the paper then have machine cut the shapes
That is awesome! I love the hear this!!
I Love the ink
yes, VersaFine works great.
I’m a Cricut user but can certainly see the benefit of this machine from this blog. How much cross over is there.
@@TerryCowans thank you for your reply.
I have a scan n cut too. Only problem I had with stamps are with drawings not completely contacted like Art Impressions stamps.
Yes, there must be a solid lined image for the scan n cut to follow. I have used a pencil to connect the lines, then it will see the image as a solid object. Then you can erase the pencil line after it cuts. Also, it needs good lighting. ~ Thanks for watching!!
Hi I didn't know you could emboss before putting it through a machine. Doesn't the residue powder come off into the machine damaging it?
Oh, be sure to heat the embossing powder to melt it before running thru the machine. I just like the look, adds a little extra thickness to the border. Totally not needed for the scanning and cutting process.
Thanks for this video. I just bought this and haven’t tried it yet.
Why did you emboss them? Did it have something to die with scanning them
You are most welcome!
No, embossing is not a requirement at all. I just like the look -- bolder lines. Helps when coloring to stay in the lines!
That was really helpful. Thank you. I have been looking at the Scan n Cut and wondering if it would help my card making.
Glad it was helpful! ~ Thanks for watching!
I don’t use mine a lot either. I’m disappointed. When it cuts some images, it cuts lines inside the stamped image.
Oh that it a headache. Make sure the line of the stamped image is a solid line.
@@TerryCowans It is. I don’t understand why, after scanning the machine will pick some images and cut them into pieces. The rest is cut on the outtter edge. Specialty paper is too expensive for this waste.
How well does it cut out stamped words?
Pretty well. I increase the distance around the words to help it cut around them. I have also used vellum or a clear sheet to draw the outline, scan that, then remove the sheet and cut.
OMG... Now I need this machine!!
Yes you do! ~ Thanks for watching!
@@TerryCowans Guess what I ordered and is being delivered tonight! WOOO HOOO!

Awesome! ~ Thanks so much for watching!
Can this machine cut label sticker rolls if I attach roll feeder on it
The newer Brother Scan N Cut (DX models) have a "HALF CUT" feature that will allow you to automatically cut sticker paper.
Thanks for the information. I'm looking into getting a scan an cut machine. You little tags are darling g. 💓
You should! See my comparison chart at reddinup.com/scanncut/. ~ Thanks for watching!!
Thank you.
I believe the problem would be lining up your paper in the machine in the precise spot to cut.
You are so sweet, thank you!
@@Marina-om1xy you are sweet! Like the 2 separate layers idea. You will like the software. I like how easy it is to send it from the scanner to your computer and back again.
Thank you for your response and answer. 🌷
Thank you, I own one and I have not used it yet!!
Oh my goodness, we gotta get you using it!
Thanks for watching!! I'll keep the videos coming!!
I gave a brothers 650 but don’t know how to use it
Seems like a lot just to make a few tags. I’m sure there are lots of other uses too, but too expensive for me . I made some cute Christmas tags on my printer, looked just as good. But what ever floats your boat!
I hear you. Crafting is an expensive hobby! I enjoy showing what is possible. ~ Thanks for watching!
Mam do we need to keep changing mat sheet after using once???
No, I keep using my same mat. Wash with warm soapy water to clean, let dry to become sticky again.
Love mine
Awesome!
Thank you! Great video! Just what I was looking for
Awesome! Thanks so much for watching!

Tape sounds like a good solution.
is it possible to make the stamps we see on the video with the scanncut (I mean with bas relief, for example a word that has disconeccted letters)
@@TerryCowans Didn’t realize lighting is an issue with these machines. Hmmmmm…..
@@dianestarr9612 it's something that I have noticed. Don't make sense, but if I make sure I'm working in a well lit space, it scans better. My imagination?!?
Does embossing the images hurt the machine. I like the newer machine because it has the auto blade TFS
Would you happen to know if the scan and cut will cut out the digital prints you get online so you don’t have to fuzzy cut them? TYIA
Sure, check out this page, reddinup.com/scanncut/. Scroll down to "Cutting Photographs." See if that is what you are trying to cut out!

I bought the brother Disney scan an cut but it’s still in the box it is so intimidating
Yes, there is quite a learning curve! Keep watching for Brother Scan N Cut tips!
This is kind of like the silhouette cameo or cricut cutter

I’m a science teacher. I just bought a ScanNCut to have the machine cut all my paper models and what not. It is a pain to cut stuff that doesn’t have straight edges for a full class of 30 students by hand 😅

Hi Terry, I will be purchasing one of these for something similar as to what you did in this video, except I will be cutting them directly on the outline - 0.00. I wanted to ask, how clean is the cut when you set it to 0.00? Does it cut it right on the line exact? Thank you!
The cut is amazingly on the line!
@@TerryCowans great, thank you!
Can you bring that stamp set to our next crop
Will do!
Which model do you recommend of the Brother Scan and Cut? Do the DX versions do cut the stamped images?
I recommend the CM350. All models will cut stamped images. Here's a chart that summarizes the models & features. I've never found the DX85C model for sale. I made this chart after reviewing the Brother website. My chart -- reddinup.com/scanncut/patterns/
I do no believe the extra cost of the DX is worth the price difference (detects thickness & quieter). Plus the DX is larger and newer, they may need to fix the problems with it (mat & scanning issues).

Hi just found this video.I was wondering do you have to have the scan n cut hooked up to a computer,or do u just use your phone? T.i.A.
Hello! I have it connected to a Windows computer. ~ Thanks for watching!
Lol!
I've tried and tried to no avail. IF !!! it cuts the edges are all ragged.
I hear ya. Stick with it. The line is exact, so a lot of what we can is jagged. Tell the border to be "0.04" or more, it will smooth the line a little.
Hey, Terry
I need a question answered.

I have the 350 and it will not find the edges of images like yours just did :/ no matter how clear they are it will not do it :/
Make sure the edge of the image has a complete path. I've used a pencil to connect all the lines to ensure it follows that path. I've been wanting to make a video showing a bunch of different types of stamps -- I better get on that!

What is the benefit of embossing your stamped images before scanning them?
Thanks for watching! I like to emboss not just because it makes the black border a little brighter, but when I color in the images, there is a little lip that will hold in the watercolor paint or marker color. Once you start, it's hard not to emboss it! Ha!
Can critcut do this?
Cricut cannot scan. They have an option where you can use the their mobile app to take a picture of the mat, but good luck with it, I found it very frustrating. ~ Thanks for watching!
@@TerryCowans I just attempted that process of scanning in some owls I colored in, took them into photoshop to turn to black, and then to illustrator to make an svg, and then to sure cuts a lot 5, and the cut was off on my test. Please let me know which version you recommend again. I do not care about noise.
I really wanted my Cricut to work too. I spent days scanning to get it to work. It's just more convenient with the Brother ScanNCut since it has a built in scanner! Sounds like you are at that point too!
