  • Imagine building your own sustainable slice of paradise, away from the stress and chaos of city life. While it may seem like a fairy tale, it is possible. Just ask Joel who has been off-grid for 9 years now, and never looked back.
Get started with your own solar kit you can set up at home: amzn.to/3jNGmdI
Of course, homesteading comes with its own set of challenges. Simple living isn't all rainbows and butterflies. It's hard work and a lot of problem-solving but there's nothing more fulfilling than delayed gratification.

I retired from an office job in NYC at 60. We bought 20 acres of undeveloped woodland in SW Michigan and started our version of this journey ;) Like you, my weight dropped dramatically with the new way of life. We aren't making our living off of the farm yet, but we're a couple of years behind you ;) It's a real choice that people can make.

      Hello:
      You are living our dream.
We live in Michiana and want to do the same as you.
We have a few years to go yet, we take care of my 80 year
old Mom and have to wait until she passes…
Would you mind sharing with us how you found your property
and what you had to pay for it?
This information would greatly help us to get an idea what we
are looking at kind of cost wise…
Thank you so much for any help you could provide and if you
would rather email it to me I’d be happy to give you my address.
We wish you all the best.
Have a great day and be blessed.

@@troystutsman1400 I was trained as a real estate paralegal and residential appraiser, so had some special skills related to searching for land. Michigan was our destination because my wife's family is largely here, while mine is scattered all over. I searched the southern tier of Michigan for probably a couple of years before we were ready to move, looking at what was coming to market and the general price picture. We hired a realtor in the area when we were ready to buy. She helped with finding potential homesteads, but the land we ended up with was a listing I found online and asked her to look at. 20 acres, undeveloped woodland. 30k. The seller had bought it planning to build his family's dream home, only to have his wife divorce him. He wanted rid of it and helped with that.

Remember to keep your cover crops and companionship planting. Peas and other legumes can help with putting nitrogen from the atmosphere into the soil. You can also grow daikon radish for your animals to graze and they will fertilize and decompose your soil.

Im with you dude. This is how humans should be. We are missing the critical aspects of who we are. Now a days people are so damn dependent on others to give them food, shelter, health, transportation, education and friends its a recipe for disaster. We are not machines we were meant to be living in harmony with the energy of this earth.

There is no better feeling in the world than to wake up at sunrise, on your own land, look out and feel how much God has blessed you. I love being at the ranch, don't make my living from it yet, but that's my goal. I used to be a people person, but people screwed that up. Cows make much better neighbors, but then out here people aren't bad either. If you have high blood pressure, take a trip to the country, stay a while, bet that blood pressure drops.

This is a solution to our problems with the greed and power hungry problems. We need to slow down and stop trying to feed the entire world. If we focus on a state by state population and bring back being self efficient. I have so many idea's and keep hoping it will continue to spread. If everyone can raise meat then we shouldn't be letting these greedy companies take that from us. It is so much better for the environment the animals and the land to do things on a smaller scale. Every state can provide for their population and focus on the people. People over profit will balance the greed. Use our tax dollars to teach people how to live off the land. If we as a collective can stop being so greedy and power hungry we can start to heal and fix the damage we have done. Thank you for this video.

If I could offer a suggestion. When your pond is finished, stocked and active. You might look into hydroponic farming. This is where the nutrient rich (fish poop) water is pumped into a series of garden beds for plant based food growth. Plants soak up the fish waste and return clean water to be pumped back to the fish farm in a closed system. You get protien, vegetables and circulating water to prevent airborne insect pests.

Speaking as someone who has been developing a 40 acre homestead in Arizona for the past year: it's important not to get all romantic about the information in this video. Nobody ever tells you how much money this type of lifestyle really cost. What you just witnessed is close to $1 million operation. The well alone was at least $25,000, each of those tanks, $6000.. greenhouses, irrigation, fencing, you will be broke quicker than you could've ever imagined. Need a Barbwire fence run on one end of your property, $7500. That closet solar set up, probably around $30,000. Just be cautious, moving towards something like this is obviously a wonderful decision, but it can break you in more ways than one.
