Neil, I love you and all the songs you wrote/sang during my lifetime. I am 70+ and named my only son Neil and his twin sister Nicola. Hope they will love you as much as I do.

My niece bought Neil Diamond concerts for my birthday most years. We went to his 50th Anniversary concert, which was sadly cut short due to his diagnosis of Parkinson’s. So glad I didn’t know that would be the last f his concerts I would see. He is humble, handsome and AHHHHMAZING! Hell,Yeah!🔥❤️💎
There'll never be another like him. I know exactly what you mean. It's 50 years for me. I still remember the first time I heard his music! It's as beautiful today as it was then. What a gift
Neil, 50 years since I saw you in concert at NMSU, I have carried you in my Heart everyday since then. And there you will stay until my time on this earth is done,,,Stay well and be safe, my friend.
Of all of Neil's songs, this is the one that brings tears--every time. Lost opportunities, lost time, lost dreams; I think we can all identify with it.
In 1982 I wrote a paper on this song in College English class and got an A...Second favorite song of Neil’s behind Play Me...Long live this 77 year old genius!!!
@@michelleshereck6961 I am sure you must be & rightly so. I was only 7 y/o in 1982 but have loved his songs from even at an earlier age as my family & my father were big fans & had the vinyls. I came across his music again after my period of abysmal darkness & it has the profound healing effect as it always had back in my other darker phases. He’s so addictive. And so handsome 😍😍 lol
If You Know What I Mean (Live In Las Vegas / 2002) Neil Diamond When the night returns just like a friend When the evening comes to set me free When the quiet hours That wait beyond the day Make peaceful sounds in me Took a drag from my last cigarette Took a drink from a glass of old wine I closed my eyes and I could make it real And feel it one more time Can you hear it, babe Can you hear it, babe From another time, from another place Do you remember it, babe And the radio played like a carnival tune As we lay in our bed in the other room When we gave it away For the sake of a dream in a penny arcade If you know what I mean If you know what I mean, babe And here's to the songs we used to sing And here's to the times we used to know It's hard to hold them in our arms again But hard to let them go Do you hear it, babe Do you hear it, babe It was another time It was another place Do you remember it, babe And the radio played like a carnival tune As we lay in our bed in the other room When we gave it away For the sake of a dream in a penny arcade If you know what I mean If you know what I mean If you know what I mean If you know what I mean If you know what I mean, babe If you know what I mean
@MAD GRUMPYMAN Magician? First I've heard of that. He's got some incredible song writing skills. He was a writer at the Brill Building in NYC along with Carole King and her husband Gerry Goffin and Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield that was ran by Don Kirschner. However, after the Monkees recorded his composition of "I'm A Believer" he decided that he should be singing his own material. And the rest is history.
@MAD GRUMPYMAN He holds a strong belief in his higher power that is probably why his songs contain so many references about that subject. He is incredibly blessed because of his strong connections to his higher power (that is my belief). You do understand?
@MAD GRUMPYMAN Definitely agree with you! I feel horrible and sick to my body because he is inflicted with the illness and terrible things are going on with his body that he has no control over. It's now up to his higher power. Cheers! Peace!
This album along with his great music from the sixties got me to attend his show in Las Vegas opening the Aladdin. Great performance as always later I’d see him with my wife in the Hamptons. My hearing got a little worn after being a little close to the stage but whose complaining it was fantastic, memorable. Thank you thank you
i'm a Malagasy people (from Madagascar), i'm 40 old now, and i've never found best singer than Neil, i thank God in Jesus to gave him talent, and thank to my dad to let me hear all his songs every Sunday since my 10 old
Probably the best Diamond song along with I’ve been this way before. This song starts with an instrument and builds to several instruments to a crescendo of sound so typical of Diamond’s songs. A song of reminisces and tightly held emotions which come up when Diamond sings the chorus. The emotion of passion he always puts into this song shows that it’s always been an important song for him and us, his fans alike. This song was written in 1976, 43 years ago today is 9 July 2019 in 43 years time this song will still find an audience just like other greats including Mozart and Beethoven Thank you Mr Diamond for creating a memory for all of us in this song.. Diamond lives forever Alex Sydney Australia
They are all so good.Carmelitas eyes,Canta libre,Sabres dance,(he was an athletic fencer or swordsman in high school and he was inspired to put some of those memories into this song)Nothing but a heartache,That kind etc etc.
Hope you are doing well and if so I just wanted to say this is the first concert I ever seen and his music has more significance now than all these years I have listened to him. God bless because we need some help up in here now!
I loved Home is a wounded heart from his beautiful noise album..Neil composes ..a songwriter of course but more importantly a composer. Those orchestrated pieces are gold ✨️. No other popular performer can do it like Neil.
Oh, why do I get to know this song only now???...41 years late! This is just so intensely beautiful. Can't get enough of this song. Keep singing, Neil Diamond!
I was there 16 years old… I remember the hot air balloon the helicopter the beautiful sunset and Neil diamond in his pomp…I have been lucky to see live virtually every artist in the hall of fame and this night stands comparison with any of them. What a songwriter, what a singer and what a performer..
Neil is such a great story teller using his magnificent voice!! My senses all come alive when I hear this Superstar legend!!! He seems beautiful inside and out. Thank you God for Neil
This song made me emotional as a child, before I even knew what loss was, and before I knew how it felt to have memories that were hard to remember but even harder to let go of, like the song says. And now is certainly no different. Thank you, Neil, for such a powerful song. Your voice alone brings back beautiful memories of my childhood and such a simpler time.
We are of the same vintage. I was introduced to ND music as a child, thanks to my late older sister. The song hit me viscerally, even as a kid. It's poetic and musical perfection.
Wow this morning as i was driving to take my documents to the plane i heard this i turned it up Great song NIEL diamond God bless ur career Love all of ur hits
My dad used to play one of his albums with this on,mostly in the car,in the late 70s. This song just happened to pop into my head this morning so I had to play it on here.
He looks so much like two incredibly special people in my life. One I was married to and the other I was engaged to. I love Neal Diamond and all his music.
"If you know what I mean" touches my heart, just as it did in the 70's! Such emotion, warmth & beautifully written. Lyrics So fine. Love you Neil Diamond!
My Dad bought this album when it first came out. And played it for the whole family. I was 6. But this was an amazing album. Jonathan Livingston Seagull was earlier and my Dad would ply it and tell me the story and I would cry because of how Jonathan was being treated. Love this singer/songwriter because he was such a huge part of my childhood.
Wat a perfect song Returning to the shelter of evening Pondering but not resting from his constant heroic serenade it comes again. A refrain and a call to look back
He is awesome. Seen him several times in concert, starting in 1980. My favorite performer of all time. I was so in love with him, and his music has meant so much to me over the years. A beautiful man
I have an amusing story for you. I, we, were supposed to see him in concert in 82, but my date cancelled on me. She also happened to be my ride. So here I am with two tickets, a reservation in a good motel, and nothing else except my hand. Well, I didn't get to see Neil Diamond, and I never hooked up with Paula. I guess her dad had some kind of minor cardiac event so, that's OK, baby, I'll find someone else to go with? I'm not stupid, and that's why I'm not dead. She had to be 6'2, at least, and was a platoon Guide at Parris Island. Marine, of course. From Utah. When I asked if she was LDS, she said well if I'm a Mormon, I'm not a very good one. Hence two concert tickets and motel room which I never enjoyed.
Love that awesome music, especially on the conclusion. Neil Diamond's voice is so distinct. He can sing anything and you know it's him. This song is fabulous.
I’m 14 if u guys in ur 50s and 40s I love him soooooooo much more than anyone I play guitar mostly Neil diamond 💍 but just this year when he turned 77 he announced he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and I had tickets to see him on the 50th anniversary tour
I know..such a shame. Ive had the privilege of seeing him twice..20 years ago and about 8 years ago. He was fantastic. You have good taste. I was brought up on this..woken up on sunday mornings as a teenager by my dad blasting Diamond out from 9.30am 😀
Music man That likes old and new music So sorry you didn’t get to go to his concert before he retired. My husband and I went in October. Just two months before his announcement. I knew there was something wrong but he gave a fantastic show nonetheless. I became a fan at about 13 or 14 and have loved him ever since. He played a concert in a rather small town by today’s standards about 90 miles away from my home town. My brother was there going to college at the time. My parents wouldn’t let me go.... I was too young. It was the early 70’s so that explains that. I would have given anything to go.
Sorry for your loss. I've been waiting 15 years to see him. I finally got to see him 50th anniversary tour in August at the forum in la just before he retired. I you third row tickets. It was awesome.
Yes Music Man I was about 14 when I liked Diamond too My mum played him a lot from when I was around 5 years old. I’m 50 now and have listened to many artists but Diamond is always there when I need to listen to some pure orchestral music along with a good rhythm. Keep on enjoying and discovering his hidden songs. Kind regards Alex in Sydney 9 July 2019
I was so sorry to hear that he has ‘Parkinson’s Disease’. I just pray that he responds to treatment. There have been some significant strides in treatment. His loving wife and children and loved ones, including millions of fans, will help him through this challenging time. 🥰👏🙏
That was absolutely incredible. The lyrics, the meaning the depth the singer the music, all rolled into a beautiful haunting rock love song. No one could do this better than Neil himself, if you know what I mean........
This is such a beautiful poem, beautiful tune and sung with such passion. One of my favorite songs ever since it was first released. Thank you, Neil Diamond, for blessing us with so many great songs over the decades.

I first fell in love with Neil when I was 12 years old, the feeling still holds today at 59 years of age! Love his music, can't get enough of it!!

He is absolutely unique. Simple lyrics, yet profound, and very emotional.
If You Know What I Mean (Live In Las Vegas / 2002)
Neil Diamond
When the night returns just like a friend
When the evening comes to set me free
When the quiet hours
That wait beyond the day
Make peaceful sounds in me
Took a drag from my last cigarette
Took a drink from a glass of old wine
I closed my eyes and I could make it real
And feel it one more time
Can you hear it, babe
Can you hear it, babe
From another time, from another place
Do you remember it, babe
And the radio played like a carnival tune
As we lay in our bed in the other room
When we gave it away
For the sake of a dream in a penny arcade
If you know what I mean
If you know what I mean, babe
And here's to the songs we used to sing
And here's to the times we used to know
It's hard to hold them in our arms again
But hard to let them go
Do you hear it, babe
Do you hear it, babe
It was another time
It was another place
Do you remember it, babe
And the radio played like a carnival tune
As we lay in our bed in the other room
When we gave it away
For the sake of a dream in a penny arcade
If you know what I mean
If you know what I mean
If you know what I mean
If you know what I mean
If you know what I mean, babe
If you know what I mean
great lyricist
You can tell by his voice and facial expressions that this was a real memory for him. I love him so much.
I love this song it makes me cry every time I hear it
I never thought this song could be improved, but seeing ND sing it in leather pants... 😍😍😍
