i could be on a Johnny Popper for days and have a smile from ear to ear the whole time. Love these. Wish the factory would start producing these new again. Im sure theres a big enough demand.
One of the best tractor designs of all time Displacement 412.5 ci Bore/Stroke 6.125x7.00 inches 156 x 178 mm Compression 4.2:1 Rated RPM 975 These things pulled like freight trains. All of the 2 cylinder tractors did. I was sorry to see them go away from the design. Easy to work on, reliable. What can I say LOL
When my brother and I were very young, 9 to 10yrs old a Mennonite family in pa used to baby sit us on the weekends. Mr gogle would take me out with him when he was plowing. He had a g model. I'm 70yrs old now and I'll never forget that sound.
That G is running perfectly. One thing about 2 cyl. John Deere is when you lug them down, they will recover again but Farmall you are done. You will have to stop & shift down because they have such a hard time to recover without shifting down. Also John Deere 2 cyl ( from experience) will last longer before an overhaul.
Thanks for sharing! Those 2 cylinder engines by their design were a fairly low horsepower, but a very high torque rise engine. Horsepower is the ability of an engine to pull against resistance until the engine loses 15% of rated rpm. Torque rise is the ability of the engine to pull against resistance until the engine fails. The performance of a tractor in the field is a combination of horsepower and torque rise. Most people assume that an old 2 cylinder John Deere wouldn't be able to pull much because of the lower horsepower. But then they are surprised to find out that the two cylinder John Deere does pull much better than they expected. And the reason for it is the high torque rise.
Learned how to drive on JD A’s, B’s & the big boy on the farm the G! The G would pull a new holland baler and hay wagon at the same time even with the front wheels off the ground going up a hill. This guy sure loves Farmall’s. We had one too but only used it for pulling empty hay wagons and running a belt drive silage blower.
Nice!! I have a G. Been running it for 55 years. Power pack in it. Pull the rear end off an M with no problem!! Yours is super nice! Mine is close to yours cosmetically & mechanically!! Fella was right, you shifted to put pto in gear
Very nice video. Thanks for sharing. Brings back a lot of memories. One thing I will say is that if you were going to plow with it all day long, you would probably soon put a muffler on it, instead of a straight pipe! Like all 2 cylinders, they were kind of a low horsepower, but high torque rise engine, so they performed a lot better in the field than you would think, based on their horsepower. Thanks again! And thanks for not covering up the sound of the engine with music!
Just figured out from your name you are from PA. All my farming experience was in PA near West Chester. Farm across the road provided summer jobs to a lot of us local kids. What a great way to learn about real work a responsibility.
That throttle was brilliant. If you think about it...... the front end gets lifted off of the ground. You’re going to pull back because you’re going back. Less likely to flip the tractor with a reverse throttle.
My father sold our side flywheel John Deere w/steel wheels and a 1950 GMC 26' flatbed HD truck for $500 (this was in the early 90s), the guy came back the next day and could not load them up fast enough and get out of there, as soon as he got on the pavement he gunned the accelerator.
Is your G unstyled or something? Because the long lever above the pto switch is the high/low range if you look closely you can see the h and L that tractor is like mine. And I have a 47 GM the hydraulic lever is beside the battery box. And the switch between the 3 point and the hoses are on the back by the hose clamps
You got that right. We had both on the farm and I would take the JD over the farmall every time. More comfortable more powerful and definitely less tiresome to listen too especially if the muffler was bad.
Engage clutch while in neutral? Trick a lot of people don't know. Low hp but a lot of low end torque. When I pull with mine I will throttle down to keep traction and usually by the end I'm at an idle and still chugging away
The lever to the left of the seat is for controlling the Hydraulic system and the Rocker arm shaft. The PTO lever is in the area to the right of the gearshift. Finley Compton.
Do u want to sell it I been trying to help my husband find a john deer G for him and I'd like to buy it for him as a Christmas gift since his 1949 john deer A got stolen from us out if our barn 3 years ago and now I'd like to surprise him on a day that will blow his mind if and when I can find and fire up a john deere A or G on a morning when he his asleep and drive it by our bedroom window and make him so happy including not the tractor I'm looking for my husband will be a Christmas gift it be as a anniversary gift to him too when we got married on Christmas day
@@kristafoster7190 That's wonderful that you would do that , but I just bought this tractor in the last three months so I'm not interested in selling. Sorry
No offense to ya since you're a Farmall guy,,but I'm a John Deere girl,,,I grew up on these and they are awesome..love the sound,,and everything about them,,,to each their own,,but when we get to heaven,,if there is tractors golly I hope there is old John deeres like these!!!!
How could you not like a DEERE? Theres nothing around that sounds like them, especially with a straight pipe. Then their loud and really sound awesome. I currently have a late model 49 A narrow front with the roll a matic front for sale. I used to have a 46 A narrow front at the same time. I sure miss that 46, Was really loud and i had a double wide parade seat put on it. I live in upper mi if anyone is interested in my 49 A. I really want a nice restored A or G one day. Thanks for the video PA Farms.
When you actually use the tractor hard all day long the driver fatigue is so much less with the G over 4 cylinder tractor buzz vibration. I never shifted a john deere on the fly as it grinds the gears unnecessarily. Be happy you have such a nice tractor. I H is ok in its own way. no need to apologize for any of these old fine tractors.
I guess we stumbled into the red vs green debate. Haha it’s been going on for 100 years. I did a video a while back, I think is called Friday Story- JD welcome, I talk a little bit as to why I have red.
I was a farm kid in the 50s farmers had lots of different stuff. you used what you had and each tractor had its good and not so good features and problems(not much compared to the modern horror stories)
Good God Amighty! Just saw my Grandpa's Ghost atop your deep thumpin' JD G and Gramps had a hand crankin' JD Model A! Haha! You sound like a Farmall Guy who's having a secret Love Affair with John Deere. Weren't you on your way to pick up a farm vehicle in distress down the road? Could swear you're returning back to the shed now that you done showed us how your Green G Baby can crank up from idle RPMs (smile).
Nice video but you don't know anything about the levers on the John Deere G. You engaged the PTO with the small lever thinking you were going from first to second gear. The large lever forward of the small is used for putting the transmission into 2,4,6 gears. I spent hours on a G.
That looks like the dual fuel Model, it starts on gas, and, then you switch to distalate or diesel. I noticed the two fuel caps, my first tractor was an A, hand start that was also a dual fuel.
All the G John Deere G tractors were original all fuel tractors. There were kits sold later to convert them to gas tractors if the owner wanted to do so.
i have a 1947 G horse power was around 45 the two things you that are remotes control the rocker arms or the hydraulic depending on which plugs you use. we also had two M's also great tractors
Ok, 45 horse power is pretty good. I really don’t know much about them but I was told that you can make these engines put out 100hp? I think it was a tractor puller was saying there is a power pack?
You have here a late styled G. If you have any other questions about deere, please don't hesitate to comment away your questions. I am a deere expert myself.
It puts the wheels closer together on the ground, therefore less shock back through the steering wheel when one tire hits a bump, the Roll A Matic front end also reduced the shock.
Good day. You re right it does sound like it's missing. When they pull hard I think it's hard on crank, it does not seem smooth.. Also I you would trade for SMTA. Dealer here in Ont. wanted $14,000 for smta. Thanks
Those tractors always missed at idle. They have a single barrel carb, and for some reason only one cylinder gets a full charge at idle.. With load, the charge evens out. Nothing wrong with it. The next series (60,70, 730) had 2 barrel carbs which idled perfectly on both cylinders at all speeds.
kory league haha don’t worry, red runs deep. If I had to cultivate the back 40 with this popping all day, it would drive me absolutely nuts! Thanks for watching
Is that a hi lo G three gears work hi lo lever. 6 speed???. I used to get the g into 6th gear using foot in between to get into 6th. Pulling sled. Disk and cultipacker on road. Use foot on hi ,,,lo ha ha on the fly....I could out the run the M s.. G would plow with M. 3 14s. A would,nt. Had both and a B. I love all the old ones.. All colors. Ha.
I’m not really sure. The tractor isn’t mine. The guy that owns it has so many of the 2 cylinders I can’t even list them. The G is one of my favorites. He has an R that’s pretty nice
Those old John's would get dirt in carb. Float would feed gas down over night. Fill cylinders. Lock it. Have to pull spark plugs and turn over to spray gas out. You learned quick to turn off gas up up at the tank when you parked them. Many hours on a John Deere.
i could be on a Johnny Popper for days and have a smile from ear to ear the whole time. Love these. Wish the factory would start producing these new again. Im sure theres a big enough demand.

Never been a fan but still a classic that deserves respect.
Yea JD G’s bring money, but a Farmall Super MD-TA runs a little smoother
I have driven Allis tractors in fact all the other makes.

If only they sounded as good on video as they do in person
My dad used to have one when I was a kid, loved it.
That G isn’t missing, but it’s running perfect 👌
The short floor lever is for the PTO. The longer lever in front of it is high/low range. The lever by the seat is for the power trol.
That G is running like A top!

The long lever is for hydraulics and the lever you moved engaged the pto. I spent a lot of hours on our G.

The tall lever to the left of the seat is the hydraulic lever for the power troll.
Ok, I’m not very familiar with JD. There weren’t any around our area

All the G John Deere G tractors were original all fuel tractors. There were kits sold later to convert them to gas tractors if the owner wanted to do so.
If you go beyond the M and H you pull down on the throttle on a Farmall.
Once John Deere abandoned some of their ideas and in corporated other tractor manufactured tech they improved sales

They shift pretty good from low range to high range
I had a few comments saying you can’t shift these on the go. Is this true? Many Farmall tractors, it is possible. I’ve done it without grinding
The throttle makes sense
Low 30's for horsepower if I'm not mistaken ....
Sounds PERFECT to a Johnny '59 530 guy... Forward to go faster... Duh...!
Many yrs Ago my father used green yellow orange and gray ones. Uses b s on up to 630. And 6 cyy. Diesels grn. Red and yellow.
rode on one with my grandfather many times
Early or late styled?
Early styled has a steal spring seat and a late styled has a cushion seat.
So name the seat!
Cushion seat. I’m not very familiar with JD.
You have here a late styled G.
If you have any other questions about deere, please don't hesitate to comment away your questions. I am a deere expert myself.
POPPER POWER!!!
I had a JD B i could shift on the fly, go from 2 to 4 or 4to 2 by just controlling the throttle!!
I had a few people yell at me for saying that... I don’t know how JD is but many of the old Farmalls you could
Why the two front wheels are leant one to right and other to left?
It puts the wheels closer together on the ground, therefore less shock back through the steering wheel when one tire hits a bump, the Roll A Matic front end also reduced the shock.
How much would you sell that for
Toss the straight pipe for a regular exhaust pipe. Just me saying.
