REAL LIFE of a SOLO SAILOR [ep 73]

  • Some weeks it feels like every single thing that can go wrong does. We, as sailors, will anxiously wait for a part, thinking it will solve all of our problems. It's far from the truth, but it definitely makes us feel better. I attempt to replace the shaft seal, IN THE WATER. You HAVE to watch this if you are replacing yours... it really wasn't that big of a deal. Afterwards, I continue on my journey... feeling a little hopeless; which can be the reality of living aboard sometimes.
Huge shoutout to @bdale2 for helping out with the shaft seal!! As well as bringing community to most of the anchorages he is in by hosting weekly concerts (:
Give a little extra support 💞 The circumnavigation is JUST beginning... all of your help goes towards more gear to make the videos a bit better and the boat safer and more functional for myself as a single hand (and maybe an extra treat for Mako)

Lauren - one of the most important and cheap things you can have on your boat are the wax rings they use when they install toilets on the floor. You can get 'em at any hardware store for a couple of dollars. They are sticky as anything and they fit into holes and things. Great for all sorts of emergencies on the water. Perfect for putting on the outside of the shaft seal to keep water from coming in, and then you just scoop it off after. BTW, we used to have a boat an awful lot like yours - an '89 beneteau 500. Great boat. Fair winds!

When you're at the helm, you're not just steering the vessel; you're navigating through constantly changing winds, tides, and currents. The art of reading the wind and adjusting the sails accordingly is essential to maintain control and speed. It requires a deep understanding of aerodynamics and fluid mechanics.
Furthermore, handling a boat involves managing a complex array of ropes, lines, and rigging. Each of these elements plays a crucial role in controlling the sails and maneuvering the boat. Tying knots with precision is an indispensable skill, as a simple error can lead to catastrophic consequences.
Moreover, safety is paramount on the open waters, and a skilled boat handler must be well-versed in navigation, maritime rules, and emergency procedures. Making quick decisions under pressure is essential, as unexpected weather changes or mechanical issues can arise at any moment.
Experienced sailors possess an almost intuitive ability to interpret the sea's behavior and anticipate its movements. They can detect subtle changes in wave patterns, identify potential hazards, and adjust their course accordingly. It's an amalgamation of intuition, knowledge, and experience.
In addition to technical know-how, a competent boat operator must also possess leadership qualities. They are responsible for their crew's safety and must effectively communicate and delegate tasks, especially during challenging situations.
So, the art of sailing is a multifaceted skill set that involves a deep understanding of physics, meteorology, navigation, mechanics, and leadership. Those who have truly mastered the craft stand apart from the rest, effortlessly gliding through the waters, leaving an indelible mark on the vast seascape.

You should have Spare plastic bags on the boat, fist cover the prop and shaft from the underside withe a tie wrap, that will limit the intrusion of water, you still will have some but greatly reduced too just a drip. Clean and WD40 the crap out of everything, Rinse everything time and time again with fresh water, the salt will dissolve, use a sprayer be aggressive, then with it still wet in areas with fresh spray WD40, WD stand s for water displacement, then wipe down and dry, there should then be a WD40 film on everything.
You would not have the original problem if you use my system on the engine and generator. Fresh water Rinse layup and Emergency Bilge Pump.
On Starlight 1989 Beneteau Oceanis 350 has a Volvo Penta engine M2003 28hp anyway I was the second owner, so after I purchased the boat I was doing the shakedown cruise and ran the engine for about an hour and the overheated alarm went off , could not find a problem, cutting too the chase lots of growth and calcification of the tubes in the heat exchanger. Had too take the entire unit clean it and put it back, never wanted to do that again figured was not the use rather the extended, layup with saltwater, also the corrosion factor of the elbow, had to replace that. So as a solution I cam up with this manifold I constructed with brass and bronze fittings and ball valves for each connection, from the thru hull , to the manifold, ball on the thru hull and on the manifold did the same at the on end valve to the sea strainer to the engine, next thru hull, pressure fresh water, and at the other end again valve to a run to the bilge.
This allows me to turn on the fresh water, backwash the thru hull, then shutoff and run the engine for 2 minutes on fresh water before shutting down the engine for the night or an extended time. It also in the final configuration allows me to bring to bear as an emergency pump, on my main bilge the engine, if there is a major leak in the boat that bilge pumps cannot handle for whatever reason, (lightning strikes) etc. I often use the fresh water system when sh3 is on the hard, and I need to run the engine, like changing oil, etc. I have 100 gallons of water on Starlight, you should see the looks I get in the yard with no hose, on the hard, yet engine running and water from the exhaust and prop shaft running out. In 20 years have not had any overheating issues or had to deal with the heat exchanger or the elbow, which is notorious on Volvos..
I change my Bellows every 5 years, with this method.. They come out fine, but it is such a critical part.

Living on and running a 50 foot boat solo is a not an easy thing to do. Then add running a business doing charters and producing youtube content on top of that. If nothing ever broke it's tough to pull off. Keep fighting the good fight. Love the fact that you are making it happen. I've been through all those waters on my own boat and can really appreciate the challenges you are facing.

Its easy to go from port to port but to learn to swim and float forever nothing holding you up not even a raft let go and float give yourself to the waters of life trust it… if the flowers in the fields where given such beauty and grace imagine what you will be given. Be like a flower give yourself freely and without thought of anything in return.

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all up hill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And when you want to smile but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must but don't you quit.
Success if failure turned inside out-
The silver tint of clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far,
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit,
It's when things seem worst, that you must not quit.
First and last verse, from Edgar A Guest.
I found this on a tiny card when I was about 14, carried it with me for many, many years in my wallet. Tough upbringing.
.. Young lady, you are tough as nails, you just don't know it yet. Now let's see a big smile and kick some ass. You're doing an excellent job.
Very glad you have some support sailing close by.

I hope you get the kinks worked out of your boat. It was useful for you to show the drip less shaft seal swap in the water. Earlier this year I had my drip less shaft seal replaced during a haul out for bottom painting. The seal had to break in and then stopped leaking. Good luck with the projects.

Allow me to give folks a tip for changing out a stuffing box or PSS.....are you familiar with a wax ring used to seal a toilet to the floor? Before beginning such a project dive into the water and stuff a toilet wax ring around the propeller shaft where it exits the hull. That will severely hinder the incoming water and after the job is complete, simply remove the wax with your hand.

True inspiration. I too am from Missouri. I moved aboard to cruise fulltime. I hope our paths cross somewhere on the big blue. Stay safe and may the winds always be in your favor.

Keep the faith. You are doing awesome. You will look back and think about how you learned so much and in retrospect was not that bad. Focus on your health first and episodes third or fourth. 😂. Be safe and be happy. Life lessons!!!

I think you could use a team player, would make your life so much easier. I imagine the right person would be hard to find considering your life choices. That said... You are a very impressive person. Cheers to you.
