You guys have NO IDEA how important those "teen movies" and their soundtracks were to Gen-X. When we hear any of these now, for better of worse, we're transported back to 1984 -'87. TRULY the soundtrack of our lives. :D
This is a perfect 80s song, doesn’t need anything else, there is a reason why it’s in Pretty in Pink and that is because it’s fits perfectly. A beautiful song for a beautiful moment. 💖
It was actually written for the movie, because the producers wanted wanted a different song for the dance scene. The popularity of the movie helped push the song up the charts.
I'm a foreign film and indie girl and normally won't watch chick flicks, BUT Pretty in Pink is one of my favorite movies! I watch the ending quite often on You Tube.
Definitely in the last scene of Pretty in Pink. This song is iconic. I saw OMD live in 2018 and they sound the same. They have many hits. Watch the movie again to get a taste of the 80s.
Pretty in Pink is one of my favorite movies from my high school days along with my all time favorite The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles and St Elmo’s Fire… I’m big fan of the Brat Pack
This screams 80s. One song that makes me think 80s and one of the first frequently played videos on MTV (when they played music) was The Tubes- She's a Beauty.
"Seven years went under the bridge like time was standing still" This is such a killer line. The idea that a relationship that lasted that long (or longer) could just be over and you have to start again...it's just heartbreaking.
The line for me is always..."if you leave, don't look back, I'll be running the other way". When all the fight is gone in a relationship, the flight instinct is so strong.
One of the best 80s bands and one of my favorite bands. That early 80s moodiness and angst... I lived for that!! They were pretty much a dance club band from 1980 to 1985 when they hit it big when they were included in the "Pretty In Pink" soundtrack. "So In Love", "Secrets", "Enola Gay", "Telegraph", and "She's Leaving" are among my OMD favorites.
John Hughes had some talent for picking songs for his movies. Probably two of the most iconic teen movie songs from the 80's came from his films. If You Leave and Don't You (Forget About Me) will bring any child of the era back to the 80's.
Those bands are not considered to be ' techno' Techno was early 90s like Pump up the Jam by Technotronic or 2 Unlimited 'No Limits' etc. This is Pure 80s Synth Pop at its best!
This song is from soundtrack of one of my favorite Eighties, John Hughes/Molly Ringwald movies, “Pretty In Pink”! I love it! Orchestral Maneuvers In The Dark (OMD)! ❤❤
OMD, the Thompson Twins, Human League, and lots of other synth-centered bands produced similar fare. If you're interested in a more eclectic dance band from the same era, you should check out Shreikback. Shreikback's "Big Night Music" album was brilliant, with songs like "Gunning for the Buddha" mixing electronica, jazz, pop, and smooth vocals. I think you would really enjoy their stuff.
Fine Young Cannibals, Kajagoogoo, Starland Vocal Band, and now Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark... You're certainly stocking up on strangely titled bands this week!! Love it!!
Spelled the British way, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. They're on the soundtrack of my life, the early years. Please also react to Blancmange (Living on the Ceiling, Blind Vision), Ultravox (Reap the Wild Wind), Echo and the Bunnymen (The Killing Moon, among others), Siouxsee and the Banshees (Cities in Dust, among others), The Cure...
They are a synthpop band. Enola Gay and Messages are upbeat songs, you can also check out Dreaming. Tesla Girls is a upbeat dance track. Sailing on the seven seas is also upbeat.
J & Amber, "Enola Gay" was another good song of theirs. Made it to #34 on the US Dance chart. edit- "If You Leave" was their only top 10 hit in the US.
Very '80s, early '90s. GenX stuff here! lol . Played at our school dances during the '80s and '90s. And on movies. New wave classic. "Enola Gray" is another good one from OMD.
This brilliant song came out smack in the middle of the 80's and has continued to grow in stature for me as the days of my youth continue to fade. It's a terrific song.
This was by far OMD's biggest song in the US. Enola Gay, Secret, Locomotion, are some others. I saw them live back in the 80s - they were awesome and had everyone up and dancing....great memories!
Heck ya its 80s! Love it! Weird thing is i saw Pretty Pink last weekend and wondered if Y'all had reacted to this on! All those "moody" teenage movies were thing in the 80s!
OMD , have some brilliant tracks ! Non more so than " Enola Gay " which was the name of the aircraft that dropped the nuclear bomb on Japan ! It's well worth a listen ! Cheers Mike from the UK 🇬🇧 👍 🍺
This was played in the movie called Pretty In Pink with Molly Ringwald,Andrew McCarthy,Jon Cryer,Annie Potts and finally James Spader and small roll Andrew Dice Clay playing a nightclub bouncer
Another one of those songs that transports me back. I know you guys have mentioned the 80's seemed cool...and they were. If there was a time machine available I'd take you guys on a tour.
You need to watch Behind the vinyl OMD If you Leave, it explains a lot. You'll also get the chance to see how down to earth these guys are. I have been to 3 of their concerts, its like watching your mates, they talk and include you. So many songs to choose from, my favourite has to be She's Leaving. The divine line The more we learn the less we know.
John Hughes was a genius in pairing music with his movies. Breakfast Club / Don't You Forget.../ Simple Minds (RSR reacted last year already!) Pretty in Pink / Song name the same / Psychedelic Furs Sixteen Candles / If You Were Here / Thompson Twins Weird Science / Song name the same as movie / Oingo Boingo Ferris Bueller's Day Off / Please Let Me Get What I Want / Dream Academy Same movie honourable mention / Oh Yeah / Yello (SO WEIRD but you'll never forget it.)
Definitely one of my all-time favorite bands. Please check out "Maid of Orleans", a song that's so beautiful that it still makes me cry everytime I hear it. And for more uptempo songs by them I recommend "Enola Gay", "Electricity", "Telegraph" and "Genetic Engineering", I'm sure that Jay will like those much more.
I LOVE this song! Amber, you GET it! This song has so much ambiance and you are correct, kind of emo before emo existed. We would wear black eyeliner, dark trench coats and granny or army boots. Levi’s or leggings. This was a total dance club song. It just has a great beat and vibe to dance to. Picture the lights and the smell of clove cigarettes. I’m from Seattle and this song was huge for me growing up. I was born in 1970. Crazy! Love your reactions.
This is my absolute fave of theirs, it was used in the movie Pretty in Pink 80's movie 😎👌 other songs to check out I think you'll like, Sailing On The Seven Seas Enola Gay Maid Of Orleans Pandora's Box. All really good ones of theirs guys.😎👌

*It is definitely on the Pretty in Pink Soundtrack. This song and Pretty in Pink by Psychedelic Furs are perhaps the two best songs from that movie's soundtrack.*
Oh, they definitely do have something far more up-tempo, Jay. Check out "So In Love" by these guys. And be amazed at what this guy's voice can really do.
I'm so glad you remembered the movie. It plays at the end when Andie (Molly Ringwald) sees Ducky (John Cryer) waiting for her at the entrance to the prom.
I love this song too because I loved the movie. I always think of Molly Ringwald and wished her character in the movie "Pretty in Pink" got together in the end with "Duckie".
You know what's also kinda funny? I always thought the guys who made this song was "Simple Minds" like, I thought after doing "Don't You Forget About Me" for the movie the Breakfast Club that John Hughes wanted them to do a song for "Pretty In Pink". Yall been doing a lot of new wave lately! ❤ Brings me back to '80s childhood, '90s teens. Lol. Yes Pretty in Pink movie..lots of new wave music in that movie, like many '80s movie had. OMD also has other good videos/songs "Enola Gay", "Telegraph", "Electricity", "Tesla Girls", "Locomotion", and "Messages" are cool and more upbeat. Melancholy, moody (dark and light) is what yall are describing, we had a lot of that going on back then. '80s and parts of the '90s. The Cold War and uncertainty were part of that factor lol. Want to hear an amazing 80s song, react to "Together In Electric Dreams", from the movie "Electric Dreams". It vastly surpassed the movie in terms of fame. Sang by Philip Oakey (The Human League) and composed by him and the italian composer Giorgio Moroder, the one dubbed as the "Father Of Disco". Amazing song
The band name was deliberate. They’ve admitted in interviews that they were intentionally trying to come up with the stupidest name they could possibly think of. The song was written specifically for the soundtrack of ‘Pretty in Pink’. They wrote and recorded it the night before it was due to the producers.
Monster Ballad For Us Gen-Xers! Molly Ringwald Will Forever Be A Part of My 80's Memories- Anytime I Hear This.. I Instantly Recall My "Year Book" Years-
These guys are pioneers of synth pop with tons of artists claiming them as a influence in starting music. Check out some of their earlier songs such as Enola Gay, and Electricity.
Love, love, LOVE this song! The nostalgia factor with this one is off the charts for me - I'm always rocked back to being a kid and hearing this on the radio, thinking it was one of the prettiest songs I'd ever heard. As a fun fact, we wanted to play this for our 9th Grade Dance (we went to Jr. High for grades 7-9 and HS for 10-12, so 9th Grade Dance was a sort of Junior Prom), but the administration nixed it. They didn't like the "touch you" part for 14-year olds, which I've always found silly!
A little surprised with this reaction considering this is one of the the 80s most iconic hits and is such a quality piece of music with pristine production values. OMD is a great rabbit hole to go down because of the variety and impeccable attention to quality and intelligence which has always gone into the music of OMD. You asked for recommendations of some OMD music that is a little more uptempo, check out “Dreaming”, “We Love You”, “Secret”, “Electricity”, “Tesla Girls”.
Favorite brat pack movie Pretty in Pink!! Best song to end the movie with!! Favorite when Ducky lip sync to Try Little Tenderness!!! Otis is King of Soul!!
And since you mentioned "Pretty in Pink" please react to the title song by The Psychedelic Furs. The singer Richard Butler has such a unique and haunting voice.
Such a great song and album. My musical tastes are so all over the place. I remember getting this album and Hank Williams Jr greatest hits for my 15th birthday

wow, sang this for talent show in 1987. high school days
This song by OMD is one of the 80's-est songs to ever 80's.
Another great 80's group is Dream Academy - life in a Northern Town... You Will love it!!
This song, from the movie Pretty in Pink, was written and recorded, in less than 24 hours!
These guys are pioneers of synth pop with tons of artists claiming them as a influence in starting music. Check out some of their earlier songs such as Enola Gay, and Electricity.
This song is from one of the best 80's Teen romance movies..."Pretty in Pink" Great reaction as always guys.
Enola gay is amazing , proper synth 80 classic and sailing on the 7 seas from 90s
Great song for a great movie.
OMD is amazing! Maid of Orleans is my favorite. It's about Joan of Arc. Pretty in Pink will never die!!!!
They actually did two songs about Joan of Arc
@@Polyglot85to90 Right. I mentioned one of them......
Yes, Pretty in Pink! Love this song and that movie.
This song was huge….great band. Try - so in love, Tesla girls, enola gray, Joan of arc, secret.. try secret and so in love for more upbeat!
Takes me back to 1985, sixth grade, OP, Jamz shorts, and all that beautiful neon color!
Thank you Amber for loving and understanding the music from the 80's❤️❤️❤️
A little surprised with this reaction considering this is one of the the 80s most iconic hits and is such a quality piece of music with pristine production values. OMD is a great rabbit hole to go down because of the variety and impeccable attention to quality and intelligence which has always gone into the music of OMD. You asked for recommendations of some OMD music that is a little more uptempo, check out “Dreaming”, “We Love You”, “Secret”, “Electricity”, “Tesla Girls”.
Good for you Amber. Up tempo OMD: Telegraph, Enola Gay, Locomotion.
Classic 80s I also like Pandoras Box by OMD.. great tribute video to a 1920s actress
Favorite brat pack movie Pretty in Pink!! Best song to end the movie with!! Favorite when Ducky lip sync to Try Little Tenderness!!! Otis is King of Soul!!
One of The best songs of the 80's
And since you mentioned "Pretty in Pink" please react to the title song by The Psychedelic Furs. The singer Richard Butler has such a unique and haunting voice.
Such a great song and album. My musical tastes are so all over the place. I remember getting this album and Hank Williams Jr greatest hits for my 15th birthday
