Most definitely her best album EVER! A&S made Diana sing almost out of her range. Listen to "The Boss"...Diana's vocal ability hasn't been able to reach that height since (1979). Wonderful orchestration and production. Motown should've pushed that album a little bit more. It should've gone platnium. My nephews (22 & 30) are in love with "The Boss." They play it over and over again. I was 11 years old when it came out in May of 1979. It's a timeless masterpiece!
The 70s until the early 80s were really her peak vocally. But she always had a surprisingly good technique for belts in the upper 5th octave, surprising, because she rarely chose to sing up there. But she was able to belt A5 and Bb5 even in her late 40s and early 50s. What I find funny is that for a singer who is considered "vocally weak" she has really amazing technique.
Love the primal yell at the beginning of this one. Just some folklore: This is the vegas engagement when the management of Caesars Palace sent her a gift of diamond studs - she sent them back with a note saying they were too small. She is wearing the replacements in this concert. Audacity makes the star!
This is her best vocal period. She was forced to sing higher and louder during the Wiz and Donna Summer pushed her by becoming the disco queen. So Nick and Val Simpson really pushed her vocally hence the screams on this and The Boss and the high notes on All For One and the end of No On Gets the Prize
@@garrengroom3831 Everyone is entitled to their opinion regardless of how uninformed. The Central park concert is considered iconic that the whole world saw. There is really no comparison. This was a great Vegas show that was copied by many but not on the same level as those two summer days in NYC
I remember when my mom and aunt was getting ready to fly out to Vegas to see this show, they had VIP seats, they had met Diana a few times at Studio 54
I used to have this on VHS back in the day. I have been waiting for years for the DVD to be released. This was a great concert with the great Diana Ross center stage doing what she does best. One of the greatest entertainers of all time. Come on guys don't make us wait any longer for the DVD.
The tune that you play when you've tried hard to get something & then don't get it!! This popped into my mind!! At least, I can party with Diana!!! 💃 💘 🎶 👩 😍 🎼 🎈 🎸
Every singer knows they are not ment for everyone but this woman does not have to show body parts like other singers to sell records. This woman has got something others lack ?? CLASS !!!!!!!!! I have had the luck of meeting her in person. She is FABULOUS !!!!!!!
Actually, if you watch the "We Are the World" tracking sessions (available on the dvd) Quincy had her ad-libing and she could hit some amazing notes, but wasn't confident with it... hence it wasn't used in the final. I think she always had the voice but was probably encouraged to stay in her breathy sensual range (which excludes belting).
This Concert is on sale on EBay I bought one and it was a great copy..... Looked like a china release it had asian writing on the cover lol....... Go Diana
To those Flo/Mary/Cindy apologists, if you can picture any one of them strutting on the stage at Ceasar's Palace in Vegas singing this tune, you have one helluva wild imagination... Get it?
Love this song wish she would include this song in her setlist was this the last time she did this song live does anybody know maybe she'll do it one day you never know

@ribbedwon you do see them at some points during this concert. she introduces them as ther curtains part and they are standing in a row...all four of them. she gives them props.
I purchased a copy of this concert on Ebay and it is super. . It looks like it was realeased in China or Japan since alot of the writing is in chinese/japanese! the quality is great! Diana Ross for President in 2008
I hope Diana paid those background singers TRIPLE the way they killed these backing vocals!!! My gawd @ 1:45 til the end they were working HARD for the money!
Beyonce just recently stated that she got some of her stage presence from THE BOSS! So its all good, but understand this is where it was done 1st and set the bar for solo performances in Vegas!
I totally agree with you reddvelvet. A&S did make her sing,b ecause Valorie Simpson could flat out sang. Diana had to really work hard to sing in the ranges that she was asked to sing in , and I think she did a great job. This is the Album that's my favorite of all of her albums. It's too bad too b/cuz Motown should have really pushed this album. It's still played in my home.
THAT'S EXACTLY WHY MARY WILSON DIDN'T MAKE IT. THE BITCH SINGS LIKE A MAN..THAT'S WHY SHE WAS AND ALWAYS WILL BE..A BACKGROUND SINGER. LOL..SORRY MARY!

She loved her job, and she always wanted to be Diana Ross. And if you've ever seen interviews of her when she was a supreme they formed the group all because they could sing and really they just wanted a record on the radio. They were first like them, there wasn't anybody they could really copy, so Diana copied the 60's makeup that she saw in vogue and Bob Mackie designed there gowns . Berry Gordy wanted a girl group that would cross over and he got. And when she went solo there still wasn't anyone performing this way, once again she was the first, so much so that, in the early 80's VJ Mark Goodman asked a then really young Madonna who was her inspiration growing up, she said Diana Ross!!!!!

I agree about the A&S comment cuz I've been listening to the Surrender album and I absolutely love it
Vocally weak???? Am zi watching something else: Abd I studied vocal😮😮😮@@raffaelw.2767
The Boss is a great album... your thoughts on her 1977 Diana Live album..? She has outstanding vocals on that album too.

Who’s watching the GOAT in 2021?
Her best era. She sounded so energetic and it seemed like she was really having fun.
Took the rose, stopped in mid note, said "pass it around" and caught the note right back! Flawless
That Primal Yell in the beginning was insane!👌
Yasssss Gwad
Ashford and Simpson at their best...... The best writing duo for this type of music......
I agree! Ross' The Boss album was one of her best. Also, this Vegas concert (taped live for HBO) was way better than her Central Park concert.
