It's amazing to see Michael come from out of the audience. This concert was taped in 1980 two years before Thriller. Michael was well known but not yet the super mega star that he was about to become. After the success of Thriller that's when Michael became the most famous person on Earth. Michael will hold that title until the end of time.

Off the Wall's success was nothing on what Thriller did to his stardom. That's what the comment is saying, that he was loved here but two years later it was a whole other level of adulation and love.
Listen to that crowd start screaming at the start when she said "10 years ago". That crowd knew exactly who she was talking about and started losing their minds. When he came to the stage they lost it again. And yes, that was 2 years BEFORE Thriller.
