The company I work for now uses discord for business. We ditched Slack in favor of it because it's easy to implement everything we need without having to pay subscriptions.
We're even using a custom CDN to avoid having our files ending up on Discord's servers. We have a custom bot with Jira integrations and we're not stopping here.
It's just better than anything else out there.
@@aymanpatel5862 I think they don't have a problem if discord died. They must have backed up their files and the program is less likely to suddenly die. Discord has nitro subscription too. So more chance it will continue.
@@aymanpatel5862 We do care for discord. We have nitro and support our own server. We're just glad we don't have to pay for some features and all the integrations like we do with slack. We just made them ourselves.

Either have microsoft buy the intellectual property and branding but keep the dev team and give them free reign or go public
If they go public they're going to be pressured by out of touch investors to just implement predatory monetization tactics ruining the whole platform, and Microsoft just does not know how not to kill an application that everyone likes. It's not looking great for Discord.

I think in gamer communities you do not see it. But in discord finance channels, crypto channels, louis rossman, space channels, tesla, and also grower indoor grower type guy channels, lol, they have all used nitro monthly for sure on the discords I follow! Lots of nitro users, because people pay for the custom emojis!
No you see it more in gaming communities for sure. Idk what linus and Luke are on about. On top of many people having discord nitro many people also boost channels (especially gaming yt channels)
You can also boost servers, which increase its capabilities. Whenever you create a new free server, you don't get much bandwidth, and your maximum upload size is pretty small.
Go on an anime server, pretty much everyone has nitro to have their pfp blinking or whatever...
I was thinking about this a week ago. I remember my gf talking about how they had to use Zoom for her government job. I was like of all things? Zoom? Then I went on saying why not discord where you could literally create a whole office environment through servers. For example, people need to get into a private meeting so everyone moves into the conference room (server) where it's private, and only those who have access can enter. Then I thought, well people sell their business versions for whatever price is necessary. So, why not have a discord business version where it's the same discord but just sold to businesses and has all types of business features. I get the gamer look isn't appealing for all but it's relatively a clean look, simple to use, and that way discord could actually make some money to pay their team. I know businesses struggle with all kinds of software issues or employees having difficulty learning the software especially those who are not tech-savvy. So this could be a way to let discord get money but keep that simplicity we all know and love. Without Microsoft coming in and ruining it or sending it to the graveyard in hopes we use teams.
Would be pretty weird as all these features are already used in discors servers and removing it and putting it behind a pay wall is not logical as it would screw over 1000s of discord servers
Discord for Business would be Microsoft Teams, yet using Discord as the backend instead of Lync.
@@tux4 No, they could go for features that are normally implemented by bots for example or just very business specific features.
@@tux4 they wouldn’t even have to put it behind a paywall for average users they could just rebrand some parts of it and then if it’s being used for business (commercial) purpose it costs X amount of dollars to get a license for it and business get better server stability and some security features or something like that.
@@hekutokku sounds good to me
Discord was designed to bleed money at the cost of getting a shit ton of users so that it could be sold. The only way that I can see it becoming profitable is for Microsoft to try to use discord to compete with valve with the user base that discord gathered. If they can make it a one stop gaming coms, peer streaming and a digital game store/launcher and Microsoft doesn't fuck it up and abandon them like they did with msn messenger, skype and mixer.
They'll make it worse by far. They'll put ads, block features and resell them, and cause exponential bloat. If microsoft buys, they'll lose people regardless of the ease of use it has now. If you think they'll come in and make it better or leave it alone then by all means keep that dream alive
@@codyeakinsbradley How do you know they will fuck it up? Most certainly they will integrate it with the XBOX gaming ecosystem and will add new quality developers to the Discord team. And not all MS purchases turned out to be bad, for example LinkedIn and GitHub. Btw Discord want to sell themselves willingly. I think with recent purchases such as Zenimax studios and many more to come, MS want to go all in, in the Gaming industry and a communication platform for gaming was kind of the last step to complete.
@@abhishek2275 because of history.
@@codyeakinsbradley They could also learn from history and be better at managing acquisitions. Once again, GitHub and LinkedIn.
@@codyeakinsbradley history said a platform that bleeding money for users will die and going public will be as good as asking a parliament full of old corrupt people to run it.
At my university I have an enormous discord server for the club that I run, with a custom bot and everything. Discord is amazing, at has made life so much easier. I pay for Nitro not because I really need the features, though the 100mb upload is nice, it is more to support the company that does so far everything right.
compared to Skype for business and Zoom, the voicechat in discord (especially on boosted servers) is just godtier. Several people can actually accidentally speak at once without the whole thing crapping out and muting everyone, and the video+sound quality is so nice. Why are other streaming platform still so bad?
"Here at discord, we like to keep things professional"
Not at Discord next on Hershey professional East animal communication
if there was a competitor to discord that worked well, i would use it. unfortunately for me, there isn't. maybe microsoft will either gut all of the embarassing furry devs or kill the platform so someone makes something better. either way, its a win
After watching this: Damn, I need to think about the free privileges I have.
In the Holy Bible commentary blue
Oh, lots of people have Nitro, it's not a small insignificant number, those custom emotes and increased size uploads ARE worth it.
Id say only increased upload size is worth it and its the only useful perk tbh
I hardly use discord anymore. Only for d&d night with the boys. It’d be a massive waste of a monthly subscription
Discord should really just keep running their own company as opposed to being purchased and absorbed into a mega corp. Some diversity is nice and Discord is pretty nice as-is. Don't want to see some corp buy it up and immediately ruin it.
If I had to pick another company to own Discord... Valve? Definitely not Microsoft, Apple, Epic, Sony, or Nintendo.
valve would be the best.
why do you think Discord hasn't been selling anything of significance up until now? there was never a long term plan for the Service. it was purpose made to be sold.

Bad thing is that discord's probably going to get sold to someone. So it's not asking whether you want MS to own it, it's who you want to own it. And I wish I had an answer I hate less than MS.
In the best (and really far fetched case) Mozilla buys discord.
@@jassi151 i heard Mozilla is currently losing money (idk if they are still) so yea it's pretty unlikely
Sell discord? Microsoft doesn't sell crap they buy. They absorb and then kill. More than likely it will become Skype or Teams or become a "new" product that they screw up and then dies in a few years.
@@CelicaAutocrosser they don't kill everything they buy, like for example GitHub, Mojang/Minecraft, (maybe LinkedIn).
@@kcfivetwelve with their track record with communication services it's understandable why nobody wants them to buy it out
I'm about 90% sure that they're going to ruin it. I understand that they need to be profitable, and I would rather have to deal with ads then deal with an ownership change. Although, it's *possible* microsoft will just keep it as-is, and implement it into windows, and add features, but let's be honest, they've sucked with that every time they've done it. The only reason people even use windows is because of all the stuff you can download that works with it. Not because of the actual OS itself. Edge? Not good. Outlook? Not good. Microsoft products technically work well, but they have horrible design/front end developing. People just don't like using their products. If they stick their fingers too much in the discord design, people will want to stop using that too. The moment they do that, the software's toast.
doubt everyone doesnt like the software and products so nah
It’s not possible they keep it as-is. But I agree so much with the only reason everyone uses it is because it’s simply the biggest platform, you can download anything for windows, often many niche programs are free. I rather see windows die though. We need platforms focused on privacy and security to be the primary platforms.

No, leave Discord alone.
Discord's in a position where they're losing a ton of money, and can right now at least choose who they wanna be bought by.
So what do you suggest? Discord chooses who they're bought by or once they go bankrupt, their assets sold off to anyone and Discord's service becomes an even bigger shitshow?
Id love discord to stay as they are, i use it DAILY, almost ALL day
We need the footage of linus playing tarkov now
I love how this turned into a conversation about tarkov lol. Great game and great screen streaming strat.
to be honest, the other day i was thinking about their storage, because i myself have a server with 2 bots, one with shopping deals (takes data from different websites or reddit), the other one with gifs. All of this is posted on channel every 1-2 mins, sometimes it's so much gifs that i don't even go back to watch them and it's all uploaded to their servers + database of data of course.
So the thing is, if microsoft buys it and requires us to use a microsoft account, I'm leaving the platform entirely.
Why? Okey i get that mc google fb and others take your personal info but isnt the new integration to games xbox and windows and lot of resorces outway a simple outlook account. @Ankit Meher discord is like reddit but for people who are aware, you need to actively try and find communities instead of just typing it in, and I mean if Microsoft did get discord they would market it and schools would prob pick it up and maybe add passwords and stuff to channels
We use Teams at my company and whenever we are just using Teams on our desktops/laptops it's actually really nice. Screen sharing and messaging is just super nice and works pretty much every time. The only thing that upsets me is these random disconnects. Teams will just stop working from time to time.
I would prefer Discord not get acquired, but if Microsoft eventually does, I do NOT want Microsoft accounts forced on me. But I would rather that over Amazon or Epic. If Discord goes without an acquisition or going public, I really hope Discord can come up with a plan for profitability and longitivity. There's nothing out there that does what Discord does.

Mate you haven't even finished the video yet
I think they'd just abandon Skype when they acquire discord. They already replaced Skype kind of with teams and discord would be the last nail in it's coffin

Why does video call/simultaneous streaming necessarily have big server costs? If the server isn't storing a vod or something why does it need to go through a server at all?
Maybe there's something I'm missing but can't discord style call be implemented via webrtc or something and basically not use server resources??
When your work chat goes down: that is what happens to teams all of the time. Teams goes out more than anything else we use.
I would want ANY company but Microsoft to own discord....
I mean look at the state of Skype and teams.....
Also I really don't think of discord as a "video streaming" service. I tbh. Consider it to be more like a chat with extra utilities to screenshare if you need help with something or just wanna show your friends something real quick, and video chat. If people choose this option I'd recommend we all stick to one client so we can help each other familiarize. Element looks familiar enough. I also kinda like Quaternion because it uses QT5. There are real-time video and voice chat protocols that run p2p. Although you will be limited by the number of connections you can make by I believe both bandwidth and processor.
Seems to me that you'd be more limited by your download than upload bandwidth. Your outgoing video can just use an IPv6 multicast to indicate its packets need to go to addresses A, B, C, D, E, while you need to pull in packets from those five addresses for your incoming video feeds.

It's good cz they'll fix the multitasking better with discord as I play apex and can't use the app without it freezing
I’m certain Discord sells info to Facebook. I had a friend who lives over 1000 miles away who was a suggested friend. I had zero mutual friends with them, and I almost never use Facebook for anything. The only services we were friends on was Discord and VRChat. Nothing else. It blew me away.
Yeah, discord is terrible for privacy and do research on who the owner is and the true story, its shady
Do you sell out and get censored and manipulated, or do you stay the course and slightly modify the program slightly to make it cost effective?
Actually there is lot of discord servers that give rewards to members for using nitro to boost the server so most big discord groups will have a bunch of nitro users, its not a negligible number.
I use to always use teamspeak for gaming on pc
I think they will make it so u can't go higher then 480p and 15fps streaming if u don't have nitro and they may make adds for when u load the app has they CAN'T take streaming nor make adds when u are chatting or voice chat they may not (its a bad idea) take away streaming for free but nitro will probably get a tier where u don't get adds for cheap on where its like now and one that more extreme
Lmao, it’s 720p , 30fps minimum even without nitro. That sounds like more of a you problem
Will sponsor a video of Linus ranging about escape from tarkov.
Discord uses webrtc for calls. It's peer to peer as far as I understand
Discord is not peer to peer
WebRTC doesn't have to be peer to peer.
Interesting. I always lived under the impression of WebRTC is intended for peer to peer. But also discord says now that it's not peer to peer because if you have a channel with many users, having so many peer to peer connections for everyone involved would kill most clients.
Well, itd probably get good Xbox integration
Also better/less biased support.
I'm very confused, I have yet to find a problem with the way Skype works for video or audio calls, but discord has trouble using a Bluetooth headset properly, or getting gain correct on wired earbuds with a mic. I don't have any dedicated audio equipment, so maybe that's the issue, but since Skype works with what I have, it's hard to believe that's going to solve my problems.

it would be nice if the small team got to share in the purchase price but that's not how reality works. but the dream would be to start a business that ends up getting acquired by a multinational company for billions
I still consider George Lucas, for example, to be the actual winner in the Disney acquisition of Start Wars, because after Disney acquired it, the franchise has got to heck. But then again I'm one of those weirdos that think that there has only ever been two good start wars movies so what do I know?
But anyway GL got paid 4BN. If I were him I would've tossed it all into disney. In fact, Lucas did get about half of the 4BN in stock options and the value of DSNY went up 4 fold since then. Imagine that - company buys you out for 4BN and you hold onto the shares and are now worth 7BN. Not a bad deal.
Meanwhile Disney takes all the risk.
