To be fair I'm 3 of those and understand not to take things at face value and I do in fact struggle with nuance in a handful or ultra-not-black-and-white situations
I actually have a theory about this, Linus. Currently it's late 2021. This might sound like "uh, current year, hurr durr", but this is actually a rather crucial point to my theory. It's now 2021, that means we've had an entire generation be born, raised, and grow up into adulthood, "by the Internet" similarly to how the Cold War generations were raised by TV. Have we ever considered the possible effects this could have on people's developing social cues? Their primary means of communication with people around the world has been text on a screen, where tone doesn't naturally come through. Is it not possible that this would lead to an underdeveloped understanding of social cues? I don't think it's an accident that online discourse has gradually gotten worse as the 2010s progressed. It would be this decade that people born in the early 2000s would be getting freer access to the Internet. Before the age of 10 (ish) most kids likely wouldn't have full internet access. So I don't think people _can_ discern tone and frankly, Linus, when someone can't discern tone they will more likely assume the worst intentions in people. It's likely a defense mechanism.
I definitely think the average persons social skills are lower than they used to be as a result of the internet and think this may be 100% true. another thought is just people like to find reasons to see the worst in people these days and get offended. We don't know the intentions of these commenters, they could be fans, literal first time viewers, haters, or just trying to farm likes.
I think that even with COVID-19, there's still too much in-person social interaction at schools for this theory to hold water. I think most people get the joke, but a minority of people do have problems with picking up social cues, for various reasons. That's the reason you have those comments.
@@conchayftw That's not really a solution. Social Interactions isn't something that can be taught in a school. It can really only be gained through experience. And frankly, if they tried this, at least in America, the kids would probably be worse off. They'd probably learn to hate Social Interactions just as they learned to hate math or science or English or History. When you're forced to do something as a child, you tend to learn to hate it as you grow up.
I got to meet Linus awhile back and honestly he seemed like a really great dude. Admittedly my interact with him only lasted for like 30 minutes, but in that time he was honestly just super nice and courteous.
Ironically, i think you misunderstood that comment about seeing you angry, i think that's more about seeing you act angry, which is relatively rare. Not neccesarily thinking you were angry for real
Anyone who has met Linus in RL, either at the store or at an event, knows that he is just a good guy with an infectiously positive attitude. I think that some of the more negative comments come from a place of jealousy of his personal success or his great beard. I'm not sure which one is a bigger problem.
Absolutely one of the nicest people you'll ever meet, and it just oozes from the man and soaks into those around him lol Went to LTX19, and he was walking by one of the booths. A group of about 5 or 6 fans ran up to him and asked him to sign stuff on his way to the stage. Without missing a beat he said "Absolutely! As long as I can sign and move at the same time." With the biggest smile and a chuckle. Was cool to see Linus take time like that more than once to interact with the fans
The only time I wondered about your disposition was a few weeks ago on the WAN show. Cole? was on vacation and and had not made sure that sponsors were lined up and locked in for the show before he left. You called him during the show while he was traveling with his family and put him on the spot, and for a moment, I saw a boss who was a prick who did not respect an employees personal time. I have had a few managers in my life like that and working for them was a living hell. I didn't think at the time that you were acting, I am still not sure.
Thought of this during the make a wish video when linus went on about idols. The kid is in love with the character linus plays in the videos. It was really powerful seeing real linus
So the lesson I got from this is... ...if I want to watch Linus putting on a show, then I watch most LMG content. And if I want to see Linus being real, then I watch the WAN show.
The irony of Linus complaining about people taking his content too seriously and misinterpreting sarcasm while he simultaneously does the same as he interprets those very same comments.
I never understood this reaction people have toward an actor when they do something. You're making videos that are informative, but also have to be entertaining. The Linus we see on camera isn't the Linus that lives off camera. In the case of actors, if you can hate a character that's meant to be hated, that person did the job really well. If you can hate the actor for playing a character that's meant to be hated, that's you being a nut job.
The best way to see Linus from another perspective is to see him in interviews or tours hosted by other channels. You get a whole new look at him from the POV of a channel who isn't trying to sell him as a product
If you are ever going to do something with a bed and water, cover the mattress in plastic then cover it again with the sheets. They do make plastic bed covers for people that wet the bed, or you can get plastic sheeting from the local paint store. Then you can do full 5 gallon buckets and be ready to shoot again after changing the sheets, pillows, and blankets.
I very much enjoy watching Linus and his crew because of their sense of humor. I share the dynamic with my boss where he'll be like, "I need 200% code coverage," and I'll very poorly photoshop the report to reflect 250% coverage and send it to him. Or I'll tell him I give up and he'll say, "You're reported if you do." Or he'll ask what I'm working on and I'll be like, "Just buffing up my resume." The boss really treats us well and we deliver in return because we love working for him. It helps that he won't hesitate to have a sit down if he knows there's a problem. I sense the same kind of nonsense going on with a bunch of employees at Linus Media Group. People mess with each other but there's still a level of respect there that enables a positive and productive work environment.
The first time I heard the "firing Colton" joke, I was very concerned, mainly because of how derogatory the other comments were about Colton at the same time. It took me a second or third time to figure it out, lol.
It's probablyin part due to differences in humour between, for example, countries (I'm thinking of a video Alanah Pearce did where she had to explain that she didn't hate herself and that it's just Australians like using self-deprecating humour). Also, I've met people with certain conditions e.g. aspergers, where there is great difficulty understanding the context, intention, non-verbal cues etc. in a situation and take things very literally. There are also people who maybe have a suspicion that someone is X, and then confirmation bias kicks in, and anything they do (even in jest) which supports X being true means X is true.
In professional wrestling there is a term "kayfabe" that describes the manufactured reality around wrestling fights, including wrestlers' personas. It's very applicable here. Some people can find it hard to distinguish what is in kayfabe and what is out of it, especially when real-world events and references are used to enhance acting.
That hole event of linus sleeping on the office and someone throwing water at him while someone else is recording sounds like it could be real in a channel super fun short.
I think I remember a video where Linus had his employees carry him to the toilet, wait outside until he was done, then carry him back. It's so obvious that it was a joke, but I'm sure some people seriously think they do that. I don't know what to call that, it's like lacking Object Permanence but rather it's the inability to understand that not everything you see is real and serious. Like you usually grow out of that once you're not a toddler anymore.
You can choose whatever persona you wanna portray and thus sanctify. If you choose a bad one, there is literally no difference to actually being that person.
Those of us who have watched LTT for a decade know that Linus is actually only angry when he gets quiet. And then, when he boils over - a sudden explosion of frustration. Him being all loud on set - that's all good. I've seen him angry. He hasn't been angry on video for a looong time now.
Furthermore, he isn't just "reasonably intelligent", he's really freaking clever. He just plays the dumb guy on video sometimes. And yes, many won't like his cynical humor when he passively insults people and their intelligence and makes fun on someone else's account, but you've gotta realize something. He finds putting other people in cringe situations so incredibly funny that he can't help himself. It's like he fuels himself with it or something.
I was going to play devil's advocate and say that the original comment could have been in reference to seeing Linus be upset, EVEN IF he was acting. Because I agree that it is strange seeing Linus get well and truly livid, even while acting. But then the original commenter responded to Linus and showed that he clearly misunderstood the intention the intention so nevermind. So basically this is all just a longwinded way of saying that you guys are great actors. Keep it up! (Shoutouts to the person operating the clips channel btw, these are like junk food, I can't get enough of them.)
I had some difficulty with this when I was younger. I don't know if that was an immaturity thing or a communication disorder I struggle with. It all seems obvious to me now.
I think this might be because there is a lot of non native English speakers (including me) and catching on sarcasm or some undertones is really hard in foreign language.
I noticed this when a bunch of these RUclipsrs were at a conference in Vegas. It was about 3yrs ago now? The Lewis guy from UT was asking them what phones they used/had in their pocket. Linus kinda looked like he wanted no part of that, with that demeanor showing a fair bit of an introverted side. …If I even recall this correctly.
I think it's a result of social media's prevelance. Some people have this issue with (often clearly fake) reality TV shows, but there you have a clear precendance set (i.e asides and intercut interviews) that don't ever show up in homegrown social media content. A prank channel, for example, may be doing stuff that would normally be awful, so the only reason you can really decide that it's rehearsed to any extent is that it would have very different consequenses without prior consent. Also, sarcasm is extremely nuanced, so it's difficult for some (not all) to tell what is and isn't genuine. I think that's why some people seem to despize it so much, as it tends to cause damage in the background to some extent.
I feel like all I hear about lately from RUclips personalities can be summed up with “the viewing audience are not well adjusted” which tracks 100% with reality
In fairness RUclips is a different format to traditional media where there was a clearer delineation between on screen persona and reality. RUclips, at least before the move to higher production values and standards in recent years, has felt more personal and grounded which, therefore, made judging whether the person in front of the camera was being completely authentic or not more difficult. Perhaps that legacy of the platform still informs people’s views on current videos. Although it’s just a theory…
Let it go dude! There's a lot of people around the world with undiagnosed alexithymia or even asperger's syndrome.. Always be yourself and you'll be fine! Keep up the awesome work!
I also am a Canadian and people do not understand my dryness when telling my self despair-aging jokes about myself. They always just tell me to stop being so hard on myself.
This is actually a massive problem with all content creators and their audience period. Over time I've started to be able to see the cracks in the on-screen character of the people I watch, and once you do the character becomes more well defined. Understanding that difference is critical to maintaining whatever the hell a healthy parasocial relationship looks like. And I really do believe that you can have a healthy parasocial relationship, it's just that we have not a single example to mimic or book to read about how to make one
There is a phenomenon with current media trends where people can no longer disassociate a character from the performer. As humans we aren’t used to this much media integration that our brains begin to blur the real with Reality-presented.

To be fair I'm 3 of those and understand not to take things at face value and I do in fact struggle with nuance in a handful or ultra-not-black-and-white situations
you forgot the biggest one: non native English speakers
Turnip kid comes to mind.
I really like the 'single subject from the WAN show' clip format.
When Alex threw the water in his face, I just thought that it was an on shoot prank that caught Linus off guard.
+1 good theory
i realy liked this one. maby it is time to start adding social interaction in basic educations in the future.
Yes, I must admit your acting was oscar level in that one
I got to meet Linus awhile back and honestly he seemed like a really great dude. Admittedly my interact with him only lasted for like 30 minutes, but in that time he was honestly just super nice and courteous.
Ironically, i think you misunderstood that comment about seeing you angry, i think that's more about seeing you act angry, which is relatively rare. Not neccesarily thinking you were angry for real
These people who think you're like your personal must be really confused seeing the same actor in different movies
Watching you guys reminds me of my own 70's show. Hanging out with my buds in a basement (in Delta). It's 90% of the charm.
So does that mean you don't drop stuff when you aren't on camera? That those little flops where you would drop something are pre-planned?
I think a lot of them are real, or at least it happens so often that it became part of the “character”
There's people out there who don't know that movies are fake... There's just a lot of really unintelligent people out there.
where is the video of the 5 gadgets that he is talking! been searching but only a 2018 video appeared
"NOTHING goes over my head! I'm too fast. I would CATCH it!" - BananaSniffer365
"Why would I be sleeping in the office?"
Cue Archer saying "You wouldn't?"
would love to get the pre-show on floatplane. I'm in europe and I really need to sleep at the times that the WAN show is on
The people who don't understand these things are the same people on Twitter who try to cancel people over out of context stuff...
Nah those people only looking for any reason.
“What do you mean I do feel that way”
🤣😂🤣
To be honest, it really is some pretty good acting. I could feel the emotion and the great writing on a physical level with my eyes.
love the idea of linus's employees playing jackass level pranks on him like he's Phil Margera
Jeremy Clarkson, "Now another example of my genius!"
The best way to see Linus from another perspective is to see him in interviews or tours hosted by other channels. You get a whole new look at him from the POV of a channel who isn't trying to sell him as a product
Love the new studio setup, Looks absolutely amazing!
Backdrop, lighting and colors are spot on 👍
Luke and I both repeated "It is what it is" in the same way at the same time and I died laughing after I realised
8:00 whoho, nope. I've seen few comments that genuinely asking whether he is being fired or not.
I very much enjoy watching Linus and his crew because of their sense of humor. I share the dynamic with my boss where he'll be like, "I need 200% code coverage," and I'll very poorly photoshop the report to reflect 250% coverage and send it to him. Or I'll tell him I give up and he'll say, "You're reported if you do." Or he'll ask what I'm working on and I'll be like, "Just buffing up my resume."
The boss really treats us well and we deliver in return because we love working for him.
I could easily see both Linus falling asleep in the office and Alex thinking throwing water on him would make a good video for Channel Super Fun
Missing disclaimer:
No Linus was insulted, injured or mistreated during the filming.
That easy ;-)
This would actually be comical, something like: "No Linuses were harmed in the making of this film. Mostly."
Which video was the one where Luke quit LTT?
The only thing I assume is that if there is a chance for Linus to drop something he will .
07:50 fan theory: Colton recently applied for a job at LMG and got it.
Anyone have the link of luke "quitting"?
2:00 - could it be that Linus didn't assume the person meant that "even pretending that he is so angry feels wrong"?
Linus: No one takes the firing Colton joke seriously...
Me: DAMMIT, I was really hoping Colton would be gone soon... 😁
said "It is what it is" out loud just before luke did, thanks for laught lmao
Haha this was big brain comedy gold I see the underlying metaphors and humor Linus did
As the great Master Thespian said "ACTING!" 🤣
What are those shock mount with the re20?🤔
I think this might be because there is a lot of non native English speakers (including me) and catching on sarcasm or some undertones is really hard in foreign language.
"can we all just chill"
In this economy?!
See this is the line that gets the characters in Persona 4 in trouble lmao
I wonder what computer Linus is using in this channel
It’s because so few people understand real relationships these days these interactions are completely lost on them
Which is greater? Colton being fired or Kenny being killed?
That's so sad. I feel your pain man. sry.
I've gotta ask though, who keeps hiring back that guy Colton every time you fire him?!?
I noticed this when a bunch of these RUclipsrs were at a conference in Vegas.
It was about 3yrs ago now?
The Lewis guy from UT was asking them what phones they used/had in their pocket. Linus kinda looked like he wanted no part of that, with that demeanor showing a fair bit of an introverted side.
…If I even recall this correctly.
Saying he's not his persona is part of the persona, so he's actually his persona.
Wait! So Colton was not getting those severance packages?
Idk man I think the comment tonality was misread. The commentor could have meant "angry in this moment" and not "angry as the actual personality".
I want to see the video of Luke fake quitting lol anyone knows what video is that?
You can tell from the videos that you guys have a good time at work. I feel like some people just want to complain about things in the comments
I've been so conditioned that whenever I hear someone say "it is what it is", like Luke at 5:09, I will just say it back.
2:02 I do think it really way just a compliment to your acting skills. Wouldn't interpret that comment as the viewer thinking it was serious.
you even have a blooper at the end of the video
I dont think i need to tell you, but dont ever change, Linus and crew. I cant go to any other channel for the kinda humor i get here.
Make a few behind the camera episodes perhaps? I would laugh and watch videos of the chaos around a shoot :)
Thumbnail is perfect. DESTROYER LINUS.
There is a phenomenon with current media trends where people can no longer disassociate a character from the performer. As humans we aren’t used to this much media integration that our brains begin to blur the real with Reality-presented.
Oh, so the screeching scream of linus at the OLED burn-in vid wasn't the real him...
Dammit!
2:51
Literally the same type of people that get angry on the street at actors playing villains in tv shows/soap operas
and Linus's gun in his left hand under the table pointing at Luke!
