It likely disappeared from the radar before it crashed. "Too low for flight following" refers to the ability to be seen on the ATC's radar screen, not the safety of the helicopter's altitude.
And just makes it even sadder to know what's happening at that time.

The helicopter was lacking the crucial part or machinery that would have told them the fog levels were bad. The Cops had the ability to ground their choppers!

In all due respect, I will NEVER understand how anyone would want to fly when there's bad weather, especially fog, unless there's no choice which is never the case really.
Just take a car and be a lot safer if you have to be somewhere in bad weather, they would still be alive today.
He’s definitely done it plenty of times before and trusts his pilot/helicopter. They probably planned to take the heli to skip the traffic and make the game on time but didn’t expect fog being that bad. What I don’t understand was why wasn’t there a EGPWS (Automatically forces the helicopter away from the object it’s about to hit)? It’s just only a 30k investment and you’d think someone of the magnitude of Kobe would certainly have one😰

ryan sutter I don’t even think that would’ve worked. They were moving at 150 knots or 167mph and the terrain changed quickly at the base of the mountain.
Cole Tipton that’s true, but it wasn’t a steep mountain it was more of a slopped hillside. It certainly would’ve cleared that imo. Either way, the pilot was overconfident and should’ve filed for an IFV and took that the time penalty instead of filing a special VFR and going rogue behind the controls.

As if the pilot seen the hill coming and tried to make a steep sharp left turn and banked it right into the hill.
Big life lesson here is to never ever fly in dense fog conditions to where you cant see the ground or to your sides. It’s not worth your life and the pain to the people you leave behind.

@@Iarryfisherman The aircraft was completely fine. He was flying through dense fog and couldn't see. He was flying at high speed at an extremely low altitude of only 500 ft in fog through an area that is nothing but cliffs mountains and hills. He was trying to depend solely on his radar instrument. Which would not have been a problem had he had a radar instrument that was designed to calculate and detect terrain. He was heading head first into the Calabasas Mountains and he had no idea at first. He couldn't see anything. I think he caught a glimpse of the Calabasas Mountains through the fog and once he realized he was heading straight for them he tried to hurry up and make a quick u turn. Which he did because there was a lady that said this is what she saw over her home. They also put out recordings of calls and a radar recording from the control center that showed the exact path and when he tried to make the sharp u turn. You see him on the radar flying straight and then make a sharp u turn to the left. He dropped off of the radar after that.

@@EatPie69 You can fly with instrument rules but they chose visual rules. You think jets fly only if the pilot can see outside? I bet those jumbo jets could go from take off to landing without looking out the window. This is pilot error chose to bypass for whatever reason and a big price was paid.

My mom is one in Memphis and she's been trying to get me to join her. She pulls double shifts almost daily and comes back stressed as hell a lot of days. I could never do that job under that kind of stress with the amount of close calls she has had.

I love how all these people only care that Kobe died and not about the other people. Yes Kobe is famous but we shouldn't just be focusing on him because of how known he is. He wasn't the only one that died in the helicopter.

I agree, if the pilot didn't suffer any medical emergency, it must be the case, he was overly confident, flying way too fast without thinking even a bit that they could die from that until they saw the terrain was right in front of them but that was way too late
Have you seen the actual crash video? The helicopter didn't fly into the hill. It was in a death spiral completely out of control which crashed them into the hill. Something had to have caused the pilot to lose control.

Kobe trusted the pilot like we all do when we get on planes, when we get on boats, get in cars, etc. He'd flown with this guy many times. I think they probably chatted beforehand with a "what do you think?" from Kobe. They maybe talked about special flight clearances, alternate routes, etc. The pilot thought he had it and again, Kobe trusted him. The other passengers trusted Kobe and the kids trusted all the adults. Anyway, I think the guy got disoriented in the fog.

I don't think it's the pilot's fault. People are quick to put blame on him because he's the one flying the helicopter but kobe could've pressured him a little bit and I'm sure the pilot didn't want to but he's flown kobe everywhere so many times before so he thought alright.

Kevon Wang It doesn’t change anything that he was going “too fast”. He shouldn’t of been flying in the fog, and there were a bunch of other factors that led to the crash. Like not having an altitude meter. 160 is the average for a helicopter and without an altitude meter he probably thought they were at a normal altitude. There’s also a thing called spatial orientation where you can’t really tell what direction you’re going.

I try to look on the bright side of life, for example, when i was younger half my family died in a road accident, and as sad as I was for a long time, a few weeks before Xmas I realized how much money I would save. The real bonus was at the start of the year I was jumping for joy as it dawned on me that no birthday presents either.

Pilot didn’t lose contact in communications, you can tell the control tower is in conversation with the pilot. Control towers use multiple mics all around that communicate to each other to relay the transmission so that in a case where there’s bad weather or terrain won’t block communication. For some reason the mic the pilot is being relayed on isn’t recording what he’s saying but the control tower operator can hear him and only he would know and remember what the pilot was saying at that moment, but communication wasn’t loss till the crash occurred

That's exactly what I've been saying this whole time! What was the pilot doing? Why was he not answering the ground control guy?? Even if something was wrong he (the pilot) should've given them a "mayday" but he was just completely unresponsive when the man was asking him questions!
Raw & Flawless only the traffic controller who last spoke to him knows. There’s pretty much no way of telling what the pilot was doing and anything anyone says, I’d take it with a grain of salt because it’s mostly assumptions. A lot of pilots believe the pilot experienced spatial disorientation but there’s really no way of telling as much as I want to say its a possibility but there’s somethings that don’t add up. One thing I do know is the pilot was in contact with the traffic controller the entire time. A traffic controller that can’t get in contact wouldn’t be asking different questions, you would hear the traffic controller repeating the aircrafts call sign like you do at the end when he says 2 echo x-ray after he loses them on radar.

If the traffic controller couldn't get in contact with the pilot he would have been constantly repeating the aircraft's call sign, so that again is what's raising my suspicions because how come the pilot wasn't answering the traffic controller back? It's just making me believe that the pilot did something intentional to crash that helicopter, furthermore, reports are saying that they dropped at 2000 feet per minute which means they were going down really really fast. I was thinking that the helicopter may have lost power at first, but that was a top-of-the-line luxury helicopter comparable to a Cadillac or Bentley so the losing power thing just wouldn't make sense which further pushes me to believe that the pilot did something intentional by climbing to get above the clouds and then doing a turn in the opposite direction from where they were going, not answering Ground Control when they were asking him questions, and flooring that Chopper downward at 2000 feet per minute until they crashed. I really hope that's not the case, but just looking at things that's really how it seems.

This is one of the most haunting things you can ever hear, the last words of a pilot and/or their passengers moments before a fatal crash.
I still can't believe this happened.
What is also very bizarre, that fast speed which indicates overconfidence considering he had no visibility...on top of that the control center is trying to talk to him but he is not responding at all. Nothing is so important that you are risking your life to get there.
He's not responding because he was too low, meaning off radar, he was unable to communicate because he was too low. How is that a hard concept to grasp? He did not just "choose" to not respond or communicate. Communication was lost because TOO LOW

On radar you can see pilot swerving and losing control of the helicopter. You can see it going up then down as it's going down at high speeds.

Brooke and Bryony Vids One of the doors flew so far that the bikers could pretty much touch it too. pretty sure they tried to go to the crash too to see if there were survivors but the helicopter was Already in a ball of flames at that point......
