I have been living with off grid power for around 25 years now and ....."WOW" what a change there has been in that period. My first set of solar panels cast me $750 each for 64 watt amorphous panels. My first charge controller was an LED two stage (Bulk & Float) PWM controller charging Flooded Lead Acid GC2 batteries. My inverter was a modified sinewave inverter as I couldn't afford pure sinewave inverters back then. So most of my loads were DC driven as well as running a DC refrigerator. My generator was an old AVR generator as inverter generators were not as common and very expensive. Ahhh the good old days were great but with modern Lithium batteries, MPPT controllers, Under $1.00 per watt priced solar panels and Pure Sinewave Inverters, it's gotten even better 👍
Yes times have changed for us for sure! I could never afford PSW back in the day either. My First solar panel was 50 watts and cost 250$ used! First led light was 90 bucks! And that was back when a dollar was a dollar! Aloha!🤙
Aloha Bob, You are absolutely right solar is addictive. By the way it is 67F up here in the mountains of Mindanao, and it looks like it will be another good solar day.
ALways been my goal as well. Now, I got to get on my garden again. And have food production as the final step to never having to leave the farm. I have done good on food in the past, then slacked last couple years. But besides the solar, and water, it's the obvious next step for me in 100% self sustaining living. Aloha!🤙
Even the PWM technology has really improved. Interestingly, I haven't seen videos from users in developed countries who are testing the current PWM controllers. It would have been good to see actual test results. Edit: really cool to see your face in the end. All in all, inspiring. Thank you for the video.
Have you considered a small wind turbine to keep the batteries always charged in winter seems you are in a windy area. For some reason whenever there's no sun there's wind
I would consider air, but I am in a poor location for that being surrounded by tall trees. Way easier and cheaper to just add a panel if need be. Aloha!🤙
Unrelated. Maybe try for testing some solar panels which are bifacial. I’ve experimented w them. Usually 15% more power. But they need to be off the ground a little for the underside portion w white/like surface. U seem to have limited sunlit space physical there due to trees. Anyway something that might be fun adding to the addictive solar experimenting. Aloha
I love that idea Rick, and I have been really curious about those. Just met a distributor out here the other day and plan to look at his warehouse of goodies next week. If he has any of those I may pick one or two up. 15% more is really something that could make a difference here. Mahalo brother! 🤙🏄🏼
Use reflective Mylar sheets below..and remember to space the panels atleast 6" apart to allow more direct light to reflect up of the Mylar. Should easily get more than 15% more power
Congratulations on living the solar-electric life for 30 years ! I've been thinking about it for 30+ years and haven't gotten serious yet, but any day now... 🤣🤣
That was great. yes solar works great . how the earth works. powered buy the sun. all we have to do is the same. working with 24 and 48V solar is a game changer. The efficiency goes way up. less power lost in wires. Their is company's now that are totally off grid. and the number growing. the amount of new stuff coming out is amazing . love the Mini LiFePO4 battery's. The RV and campers love them . I do HAM radio portable. carrying lead battery was hard. because of that I went NiCad . still was big but lighter. for same power . was re wire 24V air craft NiCad to 12V . still have one and use it from time to time. got Victron to charge them. just custom settings. and on a old solar panel with the round cells . much bigger but still working 35 years later !
I will never stop being amazed at the power I catch and use from the sun. There will always be a kind of magic feeling about it. And then with all the new stuff coming out it makes me feel like a kid with Christmas eve excitement all over again. Besides being my own power station, it is just plain old fun! Building a new system for the shop now. Just ear to ear grin about it! I know you are just like that too! Love your enthusiasm brother! Aloha!🤙
Going to build another system in a few months. I have bought the two 300-amp Li-Time Lipo4 batteries. Since I won't be putting them to use for 2 or 3 more months should I unbox and charge them or let them just sit till I am ready to use them then unbox and put them and charge them then. Thx!
It probably won’t matter either way for another 2-3 months they will be fine. I would charge them myself just to make sure they are working Ok & to help balance the cells initially.
Great batteries! Nice addition for sure. They probably arrived at near a 50% SOC . Most I have sent out here do, and that's just fine to leave as is for a month or two no problem . I have also charged some up full, then never touched them for months too. I'm excited for your new build. Let us know how those bad boys work! Aloha!🤙
Like your video’s is there any way to help me out I have a 3000 watt 48v inverter and I was wondering what list of parts do i need if your able to help me and 375watt solar panels mahalo pls help me out
All new electronics have switch mode supply and a rectifier… AC to DC anyways Modified will be just fine 😂 and if your electronics don’t have it, throw away they don’t consume energy in regards to solar anyways
Be careful with the MSW these days. Yes, lots of things have SMPS now but the better stuff has active PFC onboard too, essentially a pre-switcher before the bulk reservoir capacitors, and they don't necessarily play well with the stepped waveform of MSW inverters. I've seen a range of responses from run but buzz loudly, to not start at all, and even let smoke out.
No, it isn't. They are the only truly affordable ones in developing and underdeveloped countries as the LiFePO4 batteries are really expensive here. I am looking to start setting up and the lead batteries are what I'll have to go for. I believe that in the coming year I'll be able to switch to lifepo4

Addicting to say the least! Be well, and aloha.
Just got some more stuff too! I may need rehab! Loving it for sure, even after all these years. Aloha brother!🤙

Still having fun with it! Addictive, for sure! 67 sounds nice! Aloha!🤙
Have a good life, nice and simple installation.
Eric from Belgium.❤
Mahalo Eric from Belgium! 🤙
Lookin good love the review and history!! Amazing. Glad uve been solar based for so long. It is addicting.
Enjoy the chill. Aloha
Been chilly for us! Not much sympathy from the mainland though! Haha. Funny, I never thought 63 degrees could be so uncomfortable. Aloha brother!🤙
Quite an achievement....immense actually. Love to see you scale up your systems mate, though you're doing quite fine as it is.
Doing well my friend, and having fun along the way. Living like this makes me happy. Aloha!🤙
Really enjoyed this video and a look back into history!
Mahalo!🤙
Loved it brother! What a great way to wake up catch your show and enjoy some coffee aloha brother!
Mahalo brother!🤙
Congratulations. My ultimate goal is to be totally self sufficient.

Do you use any Certain Brand of Solar panels ?
Majority I use atm are Newpowa. Got some BougeRV too. And a few other older ones. Aloha!🤙
Great video.

Thank you. Looking forward to you studying for your Ham licence. Who knows we might have a conversation in the future. KEORPU@@ProjectsinParadise808
nice 580W panels are now for 100$.
Wow! That is so great for us! Aloha!🤙
Maybe I can get by with just 2 more panels. 😂 no I need 4. OH. There on sale let's get 6 😂😂😂
That's how I think too! Haha! Love it! Aloha!🤙
