    I'm an Indian Kiwi who was in the NZ army, and when we went to the marae in the first week of basic, the moment everyone sang this waiata, that was the moment I felt connected to our land. I live in the big smoke now and it's easy to get lost and depressed in things that don't matter. What matters are the basic concepts that tikanga has, and the people around you. It isn't just a culture, it's a lifestyle.
    Thanks for this upload, brought back some nostalgia

    Tumatauenga e karanga e te iwi e
    - Tumatauenga is calling to the people
    Kua eke mai nei ki runga te marae e - who have just set foot on this marae
    Mauria mai ra e nga mate o te motu e - Bring with you memories of all the dead
    Me nga tini roimata e maringi whanui e - and so many tears spilling forth nation-wide
    Titiro e nga iwi e nga mahi o te motu - Look at our people working across the land
    E hora atu nei e - Spread out far and wide
    Rū ana te whenua, whatiwhati te moana - Shaking is the ground, quivering is the sea
    Aue te aroha te mamae i ahau e - Oh, the love and the pain within me
    Rū ana te whenua whatiwhati. Hei! - The ground shakes and quivers, yeah!
    Tumatauenga = God of War
    Marae = gathering place

      Just to let you know this waiata does not originate in the North, "Te Arawa" is the original version. It commemorates the visit of the children from Omaio School, near Opotiki, to Whaka-rewa-rewa Maori School at Rotorua in the early stages of World War Two
