All background vocal harmonies done by Gaye himself - multi-layers aplenty.

Being from Detroit ,we claimed this voice as ours ,so you can imagine the devastation we felt when his own Father shot him. Just absolutely gutted.

I was living in the LA area when this happened. My ex and I were on a Sunday afternoon drive when it was announced on the radio. I thought we were going to crash. We simply could not believe what we had just heard. To this day, I am not over it. And as many times as I have attempted to forgive his father, I simply can't.

Just found your channel and this man was a killer on stage and loved all of his music. I miss Marvin Gaye so much, he sung from the heart and was a performer on the stage, his music (sexy) was the type of music he made and still sounds good in 2024. Thanks for playing this song.

  • @johnr8820

Interesting that you said that one sound sounded like a bird flying. Marvin would study the sounds of nature and try to incorporate them into his music. His textures are unreal. All the amazing musicians made it happen and helped shape his sound but it was his words and visions…genius

When I hear this song I always picture him dancing with a woman and he's holding her close singing this in her ear. By the end she has completely melted, her knees are weak and he has to hold her up or she would fall to the floor. Yep. That's Marvin.

I am a big Gaye fan. Lived with what’s going on for many years. Eventually I got this album, here my dear and his other original albums and they are at times just as good as what’s going on. An amazing artist who died far too young at the hands of drugs and a deranged father, who chose to shoot and kill Marvin in 84.

You’re right about the lack of perversion. A guy I used to listen to named Blowfly who I used to listen to for kicks and bought albums of was totally perverted, just like lil Wayne. That those kind of lyrics would become mainstream was unheard of in the 90s when I started buying blowfly albums. A true original in his own perverted way.

Good stuff. Based on the things you were saying, it just dawned on me, that's a whole other world to explore. It made me really think you might like Al Green from his Gets Next to You album. Came out maybe three or four years before this Marvin Gay song. It's got some hard driving funk and some soul stuff and it's beautiful; every song is fire. Oh and they also do a cover of The Doors, Light My Fire and the way he reinterprets it is just genius. But anyway, the song, Are you lonely for me baby? is a great blend of all of those elements from that album. It's right here:
