Can you believe that I worked with her for about half a year at Urban Outfitters in Boston Massachusetts, way back in 1991-92? She was a very kind young woman, no BS, no attitude. She was the only one there cool enough to be able to talk about the Byrds with me. I'll never forget how we talked about them and she sang a bit of their song 'You Don't Miss Your Water'. Shortly after she left the job, a number of us who had worked with her went to go see her perform with David at a club in Somerville, can't remember the name of the venue. We all sat spellbound. And a few years later, she had made it big and was on the radio, being interviewed. I could not believe my ears. Later on, some friends tried to turn me on to her music. When I told them I already knew about her and had worked with her for a while, they did not believe me. Hey ho! So pleased you made it Gillian! You were always a star though. Hope you are well. Your old colleague, Cameron!
It was just about that time 1990-92 I heard a live performance of Orphan Girl with this beautiful intro by Robin, Never heard another recorded version as beautiful as that.
When this first came out I was driving my truck in rural Illinois and "The Whip" radio station played this. I had to pull over to listen it affected me that much. What a great talent.
Back in the late 40’s/50’s my Country Granny would sing me “mournful tunes” and I just loved them. I thought she had the most beautiful voice, tho others laughed , saying she couldn’t carry a tune. Ballad of Barbara Allen was my favorite, and I’d crawl onto her lap, we’d rock, sing, and make up additional verses. I can still remember what she smelled like, and sounded like. Then we had biscuits, and dewberry jelly. Heaven!
Dave Rawlings makes this song ( as good as Gillian is). Sublime guitar throughout and backing vocals so precise it makes you melt. His passion for the song also resonates to the listener with a rare honesty and love that endears further enjoyment.
I actually don't like country music, or much I have heard but Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings, wow, just magic, the dissonance is so powerful and so subtle and so penetrating just just so beautiful
Yea Alex, I feel ya. Gillian Welch and David Rawlings make a powerful musical combo. There is a newer live version of Time (the Revelator) on RUclips. I wonder what would happen if she bought a Stratocaster? (reference to her song "I wanna play that rock & roll"). Look up Sarah Harmer's song "Almost" off her album All of Our Names. Or listen to any of Aimee Mann's music (after the Til Tuesday years). Start with CDs "I'm with Stupid" or "Whatever". Kindest Regards, John Jelks
Every time I listen to this I get chills down my spine. Musical perfection - the playing, the vocals, the quality to the sound. It a kind of magic. Then I don't listen for while - and its a surprise all over again! 8-)

I enjoy it very much when we all are deep into some artistic shit and someone can bring some other art to the table to enjoy, instead of just fighting on youtube.
Darling, remember when you come to me I'm the pretender and I, what I'm supposed to be But who could know if I'm a traitor Time's the Revelator They caught the Katy and left me a mule to ride The Fortune Lady came along, she walked beside But every word seemed to date her Time's the Revelator, the Revelator Up in the morning, up and on the ride Drive into Corning and all the spindles whine And every day is getting straighter Time's the Revelator, the Revelator Leaving the valley, fucking out of sight I'll go back to Cali where I can sleep out every night And watch the waves and move the fader Time's the Revelator, the Revelator Queen of the fakes and imitators Time's the Revelator
I recently found out my grandpa who passed before my birth played guitar while in the war. My grandmother went into her bookshelf passage attic and fished out a 1942 Kay that has been sitting for 30+ years. She passed it down to me and gave the 1938 rickenbacker Ohalu lap steel to my mom. All these years I thought I was the only person in my family (apart from a distant cousin) that was into playing music. Life is full of surprises.
history made this beautiful country of Ares a wonderland. ladies like Gillian Welch and gents like Dave rawlings keep us going .God bless all of you .I'm chokeing up now.
I got my grandfather's guitar when I was about 13/14. At that time My dad would visit his paint shop spending time with him, trying to gain those 13/14 years that he had lost. They had a falling out just when I was born, he told my grandpa that he would not be apart of my life. 13/14 years of heroin, alcoholism and violence, my dad cleans up somehow...became a Christian. Contacted my grandfather to apologize for how things happened. He started visiting the old shop where he used to run his sign painting business out of. My paps saw a guitar on the wall and said "hey I didn't know you play guitar!" His reply: "...really? Neither did I. Take it" Somewhere in the time where my father estranged himself from my grandfather, either there was an accident, or some kind of brain sickness/virus, my grandpa lost his memory...well, his mind can't create new memories. Anterograde amnesia? He doesn't remember where he got the guitar, or even if he has ever played it. I might be the only musician in my family... ...wow. almost 20 years, I've been playing music. Started with punk rock and heavy metal. As I have learned to open myself to many forms of music, I have become more creative...and have taught myself how to play 6 different instruments because of that guitar. The raw humanity in folk music is where I found my mind to be able to feel the truth in grief. In hope. And in reverie.
Gillian & Dave are one of the most perfect teams I've ever heard. They compliment each other to a t. Glad I got to catch them live on this tour. Phenomenal.
Gillian Howard Welch is an American singer-songwriter. She performs with her musical partner, guitarist David Rawlings. Their sparse and dark musical style, which combines elements of Appalachian music, bluegrass, country, and Americana. More than two decades later, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings have become Music City royalty together.
Welch is an English surname of Anglo-Saxon origin. It comes from the Old English word Welisc meaning foreign. It was used to describe those of Celtic or Welsh origin. ... Welch is the usual form of the surname in England; the usual form in Ireland is Walsh, and in Scotland Welsh.
ok, late to the party, just became aware of this song. So gonna just close my jaw and shut up and re-sort my jumbled heart and emotions. That's some great songwriting...

So unbelievably beautiful. Woke up with this song playing in my head and had to revisit it. Thanks for putting up the video - what an honest, simple yet perfect depiction of the music.
Astonishing work. There may be a song for everything in this world, or maybe close to that. This one fulfills an important need for some of us, I'm sure, whether you're on the listener side, or the song side.
Dreamed I was paddling a canoe down a flooded street lined with small trees. I was singing this song and as I passed each tree, the leaves turned yellow and fell off into the water. I stopped paddling but the canoe went on and the leaves fell, revealing bare branches that reached up to a grey sky.

Love to read little stories like this 😊❤
I did not work with her but I used to see her at bookshop santa cruz in mid-80's.
It was just about that time 1990-92 I heard a live performance of Orphan Girl with this beautiful intro by Robin, Never heard another recorded version as beautiful as that.
That's amazing. I'm glad she's as nice as her music.
@@frankpeter6851 That was the bookshop before the 1989 earthquake?

It continues to surprise me how few people know Gillian Welch, one of the most consequential musicians of the 21st century.

The morning mists and grief of Appalachia condensed into quiet backroom chords... black and blue and beautiful.
I am totally obsessed by this track. I have to listen to it at least once a day.
Hello friend, how are you doing today?
Beautiful and so haunting. I think Gillian Welch is a time traveler from the 1930's.
This track must be pushing 20 years + may it continue to defy time/space 💞
i still remember the first time i heard it.
Dave Rawlings makes this song ( as good as Gillian is). Sublime guitar throughout and backing vocals so precise it makes you melt. His passion for the song also resonates to the listener with a rare honesty and love that endears further enjoyment.

After all these years, still consider this the perfect song.
I couldn't sleep last night, this song kept playing in my head over and over. So damn great.
One of my favorite songs ever.
I had to pull off the road - instant fan.

Apparently the recording on the album was their MIC CHECK! I'm so glad they left the raw harmonies alone!
Glad the mic sounded good
@@itsjuno4467 imagine if the mike was fucked up yeesh another audio engineer got his wings that day
Something beautiful, and rare happens when they are playing together; they create magic, every song.
One of the best songs made.

both of these people are a gift, it's hard to find music that can move me emotionally any more but these two do it every time.
One of the best songs of this century so far. Completely haunting.
This is good folk music... Rare to find these days.
I always thought of her more as a bluegrass artist. It's the same vibe as some mellow Alison Krauss. Not important I guess. I love them both.
Comments like that though are pretty easy to find though. Maybe make some good folk and pipe down. Get two birds stoned at once
My Friend Bill Simmon turned me onto Gillian and David. In the '90's, we saw them in a small VT club and it was truly AMAZING!
Amazingly beautiful. Enough said. Thank you Gillian and David.

When I get kinda despairing about music being made these days, I listen to this beautiful artist and magician, and she brings me around.
Check out Bright Eyes and Connor Oberst's stuff (same person)
not2tees there was bad music in the past as well
music can't be all great just as it can't be all bad, just special. it's what resonates with you the most that you should be glad about
This whole album is one of the best in my collection. Not a bad track in it!
I go back and forth that maybe it is the best album, but I couldn't agree more.
The best. The best. The best! Love this girl's music so much. And Rawlings is excellent.
That guitar playing is just amazing!
I call dibs to come back as Gillian's microphone!
Just recently discovered these two. At first I was merely impressed, but the more I listen, the more I realize just how extraordinary these two are.
A phenomenal song sung and played with passion, conviction and love. Welch's singing is timeless. Rawlings' guitar is heart-rendingly beautiful.
his
guitar makes me weep
Me too. He's also the best duo harmony vocalist in the biz. There's nothing he does up against her voice that doesn't vibrate like a bell in my head.
