I found a magnavox player fd2040 with all sorts of problems. I had zero experience with this model I’ve fixed minor problems with other models/brands but not as complicated as this one I got . I got it to work with in a month or so but I had trouble with the ball bearing. It turned out to be dry and it had started to crack and dent the plastic pieces that makes contact with it. I measured everything before I started sanding the dented piece then glued down a thin layer of aluminum to accommodate the plastic sanded off . I lubricated and reassembled everything and finally all my cds played well. It’s probably the most detailed project I’ve done in a while. I also noticed a lot of l cold joints in this project that were causing issues specifically with the connections from the laser PCB to the servo board. I’m very happy with the results and sound quality.
Thanks for the information sir. I have a Marantz CD73 and I can't read properly new Verbatim Datalife CD-R (and I tried all the burning speeds possible) but other ones from TDK, Maxell (XL II), Kodak, Philips (Silverspeed) are OK. It's more and more complicated to find new old stocks of CD-R. Nowedays, you only find CD-R from Philips and Verbatim whose quality is not that good unfortunately.
I have the same one which is not working anymore. A few years ago I put aside for a will and when I put it back in service it wasn't playing if I didn't let on all the time. Now it's stop playing it must be the capacitors which failed completely. I will try to check the caps hope it will come back to life. Thank you for the info.
Hi, great video. Very helpful. These are great sounding players when recapped. My unit sounds great but the drawer opening and shutting sticks quite a lot. It might be a mechanical issue there seems to be a few metal moving parts like a runner on the side, or an electrical issue with the switch. Any advice on this sticky drawer. The. motor seems quite strong you can feel it pulling hen you touch the drawer. Cheers David.

Try tweaking the CD platter height adjustment a little (torx screw) as this often helps.

It's normally a stretched belt that causes this.
