Fever Tree - San Francisco Girls (1968)

  • In 1968 this was a summer favorite despite not rising very high on the U.S. national charts. Up against songs destined to be rock classics like "Born To Be Wild," "Journey To
The Center Of The Mind," and "Sky Pilot," the Fever Tree's "San Francisco Girls" nevertheless offered a unique psychedelic sound never before heard nor ever since. Beautiful and trippy, this song may well have been the very first foray into "trance music" ... you could achieve a state of euphoria just listening to it. I know I certainly did. It should have been on the Top 10 in my opinion.
Although the song is about the girls of San Francisco during the years 1967 and 1968, the lyrical narrative seems to be about a guy breaking up with his girlfriend because he is sick of their lifestyle and wants to get back to the simplicity and good times in The Bay area. I have always been too focused on the music to notice this fact, but it would explain why the song is subtitled "Return Of The Native."
It is indeed the music this excellent psychedelic masterpiece should be remembered for. Various clips of film footage are from San Francisco during 1967, 1968, and 1969. As to the photos, although a few of the young women appearing in this video are actually Boho-chic fashion models (for transition effect), most are images from 1967-69.

This song was quite frequently played on the local Top 40 station in Burlington, Vt., when I lived there in '69-'70 (which prompted me to buy the album). The single must have had a second life on the East Coast, a couple of years after it was released.

I'm not sure about post 1970, but I first heard the single in summer 1968. maybe spring and summer, when the guy who owned the campgrounds we used to camp at, with a large artificial lake and lots of sandy beach, loaded it into the jukebox he kept in a pavilion we kids used to flock to smoke cigarettes and mix with the girls, sitting on picnic benches he set up for people to sit on. This song got a lot of play that year. So did "Sky Pilot" by Eric Burdon. I plunked a lot of coins into that machine over the years, until 1975.

I'm sure Fripp didn't emerge in a vacuum. He may well have heard this and other work that paralleled his own musical preferences, especially as early as 1967-68. Fever Tree had a distinctly unique sound, even for the psychedelic era. The entire album is that way, actually. Lucky for us that there were disc jockeys who liked their sound and this song in particular even though it did not chart well nationally.
