Formula One’s the same as Nascar or Indycar in that it’s an entire brand, a sport, with possibly billions pumped into it over the last century. When an F1 driver and a Nascar driver swapped cars for a race, the Nascar driver described it as a once in a lifetime experience; the F1 driver said it was fun

The "liter" indication shows the volume of gas/air an engine is sucked in per single rotation. This is not necessarily related to the amount of cylinders/pistons the volume is split onto (4 cyl/6cyl) nor even the orientation of the cylinders (V or straight shape). Don't mix that up. You might get also a 1-liter V8 or a 1.5 ltr straight 6. All is possible.
"Naturally aspirated" means that the air/gas is being sucked into the engine just by the piston downward movement in the cylinder without any external compressor or turbo charger support.

With stick shift, you have more control, more feel, better understanding of the car and its safer (safer if you know what you doing) and more economic, you can pull stick shift car, you don't need a recovery car and there is so much more with stick shift that comes, compared to automatic, automatic is good for traffic and easier to to learn, automatic is very good for companies tho, because they are more complicated and harder to fix by yourself so you have to go to dealership and getting ripped off few thousands, while they can fix it for couple hundreds and people who drive automatic don't really know how cars work so its easier to rip them off, while people that drive stick usually knows more about cars.

@@brrosskiee because you have more control of the car that is the simple answer.
Longer answer, you feel the car better this comes in clutch in all seasons, but especially in a winter, because you can properly engine brake and all that feel of the car you have to be very precisely in slipery conditions and automatic guesses what gear you should be in and in manual you choose what gear you should be in.
Ofcourse both types of cars are very safe it depends more on manufacturer then automatic or manual, but manuals give that tiny amount of more safety, but if you gonna give someone a manual who does not know how it works and its not experienced in it, then its gonna be safer for him to drive automatic, but manuals actually very easy to learn, once you learn it you will understand how easy is to learn it.
its like learning to ride a bike, when you little it looks scary and hard, but once you get it, you get it for life.

On the safety issue, a driver from the 1950s said to understand F1 you had to remember that World War 2 had just ended. The attitude towards sudden death was much different and didn't really change for another 10 or 20 years. The carnage of the 50s and 60s eventually slowly gave way by the 1970s and 80s (look up Jackie Stewart - and his career).

Hi I'm from the Netherlands and been watching F1 for decades plus I did some rl racing my self in karting.
Here are some answers you asked.
The drivers have a roll bar integrated in the air intake of the engine and since the last seasons a halo cage on top if the cockpit.
In fact you are more likely to get injured in a normal car at 30 mph then in a F1 driving full speed.
A natural aspirated engine is a non turbo or compressor engine.
So it "breats" normal atmospheric presure like you doing now.
Engine volume does not detirme the amount of pistons or their configuration.
In case of F1 its size, weight, durability and its shape that dominates the design of the engine.
The factor for shape is aerodynamics, the pointy back like a water droplet is the best way to reduce drag so the engine must not be to "fat".
Before the current hybrid engines V10 where faster then then V12.
The V12 engine was more powerfull but created more drag then it gained power on a V10.
And I'm pretty sure if you learn how to shift you dont want to drive a automatic anymore.
And I wont be surprised that you would be fast on track you are smart and calm so dont underestimate yourself until you try.

That Toyota blindness is funny. First, those old Formula 1 cars never used a Toyota engine. Also newer Lotus built F1 cars (Lotus didnt participate itself) used Renault engines for example. Second, the Lotus Emira uses Toyota and Mercedes engines. The Mercedes engine is much smaller and uses less fuel (so it is also cleaner), but has about the same power and speed parameters. Well, Toyotas are solid, thats true (like Honda, what I prefer). But they are not really something that can drive someones heart wild from the look. 🤷🏻‍♂️😁

yes in Streetcars when you go 20 years back but not any more, you are much faster with the dual clutch today. On a normal Racetrack like Silverstone with the same driver and same car but ones with the Stickshift and the other with dualclutch, the Dualclutch car is 5-7sec faster per round. Thats the reason why F1 cars have since over 30 years this typ of Gearbox. Porsche use it at first in the 80´s in the Group C Racecars 956/962, maybe you know the PDK.

Dual clutch 5-7 secs per lap...BS.. Dual clutch only saves 0.001 secs per gear change. Multiply that by approx 100 gear changes per lap, would put the advantage at 0.1 sec per lap. Does not sound like a lot, but in F1 it is huge. Automatic gearboxes as most people would understand it (used in road cars) utillise hydraulics to operate, the frictional loses in this technology are way to high for F1 scenarios. Paddle shift is by far the most efficient way of gear selection. Paddle shift as opposed to stick shift, they are 2 different things. F1 is ALL about effeciency. Save 0.1kW in 10 places = 1kW extra power to move the race car, again does not sound like much but in F1 terms, is huge. I am generalising here, road cars are nornally somewhere between 20 to 30 % efficient, F1 cars are roughly between 48 - 52%. 500 - 600 kW from a 1.6 ltr engine "unbelievable" when a road car would only produce less 100kW

Natural Aspirated : No Supercharger or Turbo
And while you are correct that City Cars often use 2.5 Liter for 4 and 5 Cylinder Engines, 3.5 Liter for 6 Cylinder Engines and 4,5 Liter for 8 Cylinder Engines. You can use smaller or bigger Engines. Truck Engines for Example have very big Cylinders.
In Formula they used very small Cylinders that can rev very high (up to 20 000 rpm) So while it says 2.5 Liters it can be a 6 Cylinder, a 8 Cylinder, a 10 Cylinder or a 12 Cylinder Engine. Maybe even a 16 Cylinder Engine. Important is only that the combined displacement of all the Cylinders is not higher than the limit. Engine Layouts can also be different. It does not have to be a V-Shape
Formula 1 is a lot saver today but it was a dangerous sport in the past and a lot of drivers died. Niki Lauda survived a very serious Crash with his Car catching Fire and you can see that in the Movie Rush
But if you want to know what was really Insane check out Group B rally racing.

Regarding stick shift to automatic, today both are at par. With stick shift, you have to know how to handle 3 pedals instead of 2 and have to manage the clutch manually. So, folks that are bad at using the clutch may be better of with an automatic. Manual transmission gives you full control about the shifting point and let's you drive as economic or as aggressive as you want. Sometimes a driver handling a stick shift very well may be able to be faster than one person using an automatic gear box.
Especially old automatic transmissions were quite slow and not very adaptive to your driving intentions. So in those days the stick shift was definitely faster. Today modern DSG transmissions and Wandler transmissions are most of the time as good or better than a stick shift. The DSG especially has some issues when it misinterprets your driving intentions and have the wrong second gear ready for you. On all other cases an DSG transmission will shift in an instant. A Wandler transmission instead is always heavy and has a given loss of efficiency given to the concept of that transmission. Some modern Wandlers have a mode dealing with parts of the effency loss, but even today you may loose about 5% efficiency on a Wandler transmission compared to a stick shift. In comparison to the DSG transmission the Wandlers don't have greater problems when handling unexpected behaviour.
But almost all modern automatic gearboxes - even if run in manual mode - will allow only certain rpm windows. If driving manual I can for example decide to chose for example to drive in the city (50 km/h) in the 5th of my previous car's manual 5 gear box. In my current car having a 6 gear automatic gear box, when driving 50km/h in city it decides to stay in 3rd gear and manually overriding it tells me, that I'm not allowed to shift to the next gear, because the rpm would be to low. Yes, if I wanted to get much torque the gearbox is right. If driving at 1'000rpm and below you will not start to overtake the car in front. But if you want to keep a constant speed, you don't need the torque. So in the described case, I could drive a car having a manual transmission in that situation way more efficient. On the other hand, the automatic transmission keeps you safe from selecting the wrong gear when shifting or messing up with the clutch.
So it depends, what's the best transmission type.
For Formula 1 it's the fastest racing league of the FiA. Currently they are driving turbocharged 1.6 litres V6 engines having about 1'100 HP and an electrified boost system (KERS) with additional ~165 HP. Below there are some Formula classes like Formula 2, 3, ... One of the more modern series at FiA is the fully electric Formula E that started this season with the 3rd generation of cars and the update to a real world championship (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formula_E ) with a given focus to effenciency and much lower budget than Formula 1.
Some US drivers in Formula 1 may be Scott Speed, Jum Hall, Michael Andretti, Dan Gurney or current Williams driver Logan Sargeant giving his debut on March 5th on the Bahrain International Circuit.

The reason why they didn't have seatbelts back then was because they thought the driver was safer if he was flung from the car, rather than be strapped into it. In those days, maybe it was true.
Also, it is more accurate to refer to Formula 1 (F1) as a 'series'.

  • @thomasbaird7559
    @thomasbaird7559 Год назад

I think this has been touched on but there has been an amazing development in f1 car safety since the series inception, particularly since 1968 with the formation of the Grand Prix drivers association, which lead by Jackie Stewart started boycotting tracks which weren't trying to improve safety. The GPDA also pressured to FIA introduce safety regulations for the cars. Since the death of Senna in 1994 the FIA has moved to a policy of try to prevent possible causes of death rather than leaning after the event which I am sure Grosjean is grateful for. There will always be scenarios which we haven't foreseen. The next big step has be doing more to keep the marshals (the safety personnel who react to a car crashing) safe.

Formula 1 is a formula, a set of rules and specifications that all car constructors must abide by, anything not covered in those rules is open for experimentation, until they ban it the next year with a newer formula. Every year they have to put new limitations on the cars to keep them relatively safe, drivable and not allow crazy speeds. The formula is largely in place to hamper what the cars can do, otherwise they'd be completely impossible to drive.

Naturally Aspirated = No turbos etc. The engine intakes air at normal pressure. A 2.5 litre engine can be any configuration. It's typically a 4 cylinder now days but back then they were most likely small V8's with large diameter pistons with a short stroke. This would mean that they didn't have a lot of torque however they would rev hard. I believe newer F1 engines can rev over 15,000RPM.

you can go far faster of the mark with a stick then with a manual, you can rev the engine up far higher before you change gear which would give you far more acceleration, as you would be using nearly double the revoultions per minute (rpm) which gives a indicater of how fast the engine is spinning and how hard its working, so with a manual you will be able to make the engine work far harder then a automatic which will give you quite a big boost in speed and acceleration. btw this is not healthy for the engine especially for long term use, but a manual allows you to do it

The pre-WWII pre-Formula 1 history of Grands Prix races is complex and fascinating. Dismissing it as rich men's sport when people can still buy themselves a car and a drive (theoretically) and do, is missing the point.
By the 1930s, the cars were often funded by governments and were made by major car makers. - and were routinely beaten by small designers working in their sheds.
This was true in the 1950s and 1960s as well, until the sponsorship stickers on the car became more significant than the makers of the car.
This has continued until major engineering firms, supercar makers, Arab princes and major banks are involved.

Formula 1 isn't a type of car exactly. There are rules about what is allowed, but there isn't a well defined car that everyone has to use like in US racing series. Within the rules each team can do what they want. It's just that generally someone figures out the optimal configuration that is allowed within the current rules and dominates. Then either everyone copies that to keep up. Or they complain to get it banned.

Stick shift is much faster - you can decide to go through the gears earlier or later in control of the reaction to the rev count and your acceleration intentions. The automatic system has to wait for certain trigger points to change gear. Great video though!

For normal cars that is correct.
But F1 cars it´s milli seconds. But F1 cars are banned to have automatic transmission. its semi automatic. the driver has to pull a lever (or button) when to shift. the shifting itself is then "automatic". so the driver has to decide when to shift, not the car/engine.
