He was at the same high school, during the sea era, as Leon Russell, David Gates, Gus Hardin, Gaillard Sartain, and S.E.Hinton were. What a place Will Rogers High must have been.
All heart. I heard he's touring now! At 79! Wish I could see him. SF Jazz Club and I dk maybe Vegas. I count myself fortunate to have seen him many times in the 70s. What a guy. He really worked hard for his expertise too. Humble.. an underrated attribute of great worth. Peace
Got to say I've been acquainted with Elven and his family and is band members for many years. I've been fortunate enough to have had a long talk with him and he is a down to earth guy who keeps it real and he still does.
yep,he was my neighbor in san geronimo valley years ago....i was a teenager...always liked him. Goofy...and goofy is good.Pretty much lived all over since then. Remember Mark Naftalin's "Blue Monday" at the Sleeping Lady? I was the kid standing as close as I could to gain licks....precious memories.
A little context here. This is before a George Thorogood concert. 1984 I believe. This is an interview with Bishop, who is one of the guys George had asked to come and perform, during his concert. He invited guys he loved and looked up to. The entire show is available on RUclips.
Elvin seemed to expect very little to come of this interview, but he was wrong. Elvin, you are the best, not least for honoring your mentors and predecessors.
I was surfing RUclips and had the accidental displeasure of accidently landing on a recent Morrisey concert... after that 4 seconds passed I quickly jumped on here with 2 real musicians. Elvin and GT are the cure for anything including seeing what I saw today! 👀 Thanks George and Elvin
I just wish they could have made things easier for Elvin in this interview,he is the nicest guy in the world and extremely intelligent with MANY good stories to tell, but obviously the guy was at the end of his patience here,,,
Good catch.....if you watch the youtube video, live version of "one whisky, one scotch....' from 1984, Elvin has the same guitar with that 'patch' in the corner. (Maybe its always there???) But I'll bet this interview was from that concert.
Doesn't Stevie Ray Vaughan massively resemble the way Elvin talks? First time I ever heard Elvin in an interview and this is the first thing that came to mind!!
A real recipe for disaster... 1. Elvin Bishop doesn't care for interviews (who does?) 2. Your average annoying video/audio crew and director who seemingly know nothing of their subject. 3. A disjointed routine, complete with bogus instructions like "Lean on your guitar". BTW: This interview is nowhere near 1976. Dollars-to-Donuts it was July 5, 1984.
yeah,,Ol"Crabshaw,,don't seem to be digging the interview deal all that much..you'd think george was a detective or some other such..just the facts! Elvin"s a great guy though and man he's played some gigs from Monterey to London and still gettin it! roll on buddy!
3:22 White guys going down into the hood and getting schooled on black music, lol! Today this would be like some white kids going down into the Chicago hoods and learning how to Rap! Amazing how things change but stay the same.
The Butterfield Band was not the first band to play "electric blues" George. Ain't yu heard of Muddy Water? Howz about Buddy Guy? Hooker? Sumlin? Earl Hooker? WTF?
Um.....he said one of the first bands to play. Not the first. And those are solo artists you mentioned. Not bands. If youre gonna attempt make anal criticisms, be more accurate. Dont cast stones. Look in the mirror.
Amazing how nice and relaxed this interview started out, and then made awkward and artificial by the the restart the monitors insisted upon. So much for producers! Who were those people? The really messed this up...almost like they chocked off the space the artists needed....the story of our times.
I saw Elvin Bishop band at the Fillmore East 1971 Midnight show the night Alman Brothers recorded their Album unbelievable 7hr Show police closed it down at 7am

I saw the "Santana Blues Band" in the summer of '69 before they played at Woodstock, they were unknown at the time. They were one of four or five opening bands with the headliner being The Grateful Dead. Great memories.
Earlier in '69, I was at the Avalon Ballroom with Elvin, and he pointed to a picture on the wall of a band that would be playing there the next week. He said they were gonna be huge. Later that summer I saw them at Woodstock. Of course, it was Santana.
I LOVE Elvin Bishop. That man can play like no one else, he has a style that cuts through a lot of nonsense. But Elvin looks annoyed AF in this interview. Probably wishing he was Fishin' instead.
"A fella asked me the other day, Bishop are you a religious minded man? I said Hell yes buddy, I most certainly am. But I have my own faith, and I follow it all the way. You see, I religiously drink two six packs of Budweiser... each and every day."
Why oh why would GT say such lame shit at 46sec of this vid? This was '76...many of the major blues guitar players were still out and doin it. Cmon George, hav your shit together.
I love it when professional, talented musicians sit down and talk about music, great interview. I reckon!
Great guitarist and guy. Always loved Fooled Around And Fell In Love and is a huge favorite. So much emotion and feeling!!
I love this interview! George is so well spoken and Elvin is so honest.
Shake Your Moneymaker still makes me grin after all these years. Absolutely love that guitar solo. Best played at a high volume...
this is actually unbelievably classic ....
Elvin Bishop in his Oklahoma high school scored the highest SAT score in his state.
Wow! Elvin really Rocks! And scores high!
Ya....a 34 lol.
@@marjoryrainey5761 Very Cool!!
wow, that is really cool information.
He was at the same high school, during the sea era, as Leon Russell, David Gates, Gus Hardin, Gaillard Sartain, and S.E.Hinton were. What a place Will Rogers High must have been.
That is one deep dude right there, that is super super intelligent. He is so humble it kills me.

Elvin bishop one of my favorites

Everybody loves Elvin bishop hes the best
"The blues is, you take garbage and you make something good out of it." Never heard it put more eloquently and elegantly.
And I'm serious.
Elvin is my inspiration. Enough said!
This is really great. George Thorogood did a great job here with the interview, and Elvin Bishop was seriously down to earth with his responses.
A little context here.
This is before a George Thorogood concert.
1984 I believe.
This is an interview with Bishop, who is one of the guys George had asked to come and perform, during his concert. He invited guys he loved and looked up to.

Thanks for the info. ✌️🎸
Poor Elvin probably needed a drink after this....But...it was great to see him and hear him talk

😂🎉
Alot of honesty and truth in a few minutes.....
How can this be 1976? Thorogood mentions MTV. Unfortunately MTV wasn't conceived until 5 years later, 1981. This is not an interview in 1976.
I always get the feeling that these guys don't have that much to say BUT they have a hell of a lot to play!!
Holding that guitar for 15 minutes of this interview and I can tell all he wants to do is play it!
Well said!
I just wish they could have made things easier for Elvin in this interview,he is the nicest guy in the world and extremely intelligent with MANY good stories to tell, but obviously the guy was at the end of his patience here,,,
East West is a flawless LP
What a powerful band they were by that time! How I wish they'd stayed together and continued to develop in the direction they were going.
Wow, Elvin & Lonesome George.
He was caught in emotion
Elvins choker, has a Silver plated Beer pull tab on it! NICE! I remember wearin one too inda 70s! Im 66!
"I've been around since the Dead Sea was sick". Haha!
Yea! I rode rhinos
I'm glad to see a interview with Elvin. Just wish the camera folks knew how to edit. Oh, that's right, it would have took 15mins back then
Maybe they didn't know if he wanted an interview?
No, I guess they couldn't just go in and start filming all of a sudden.
It hurts to watch this.
I have a problem with the date of this interview being 1976. At 11:04 of the interview, George mentions MTV, which wasnt launched until 1981. Hmmmm.
Good catch.....if you watch the youtube video, live version of "one whisky, one scotch....' from 1984, Elvin has the same guitar with that 'patch' in the corner. (Maybe its always there???) But I'll bet this interview was from that concert.
@@mikegroat7732 Yeah, probably more like '84

This is from July 1984.
+guitarmanp90 It was from an MTV special on blues that had John Lee Hooker, Albert Collins, and Willie Dixon. I remember seeing it back in the day.

me too.
back when mtv was almost worth a shit.
@@divingduck1970 yep MTV mention dates that
Thank you
What a great interview, love the behind the scenes take on it. Thx. 🌷 Then Oklahoma boys, right? George Thoroughgood looking good too. 😎
There was no MTV in 76 wth?
All the back to 1976!!!
Elvin is so modest
@ Daniel Beaudry, and another problem is that George Thorogood didn't hit the scene until 1977.
I needed a job.. If you hav'nt been there, that livin
Doesn't Stevie Ray Vaughan massively resemble the way Elvin talks? First time I ever heard Elvin in an interview and this is the first thing that came to mind!!
Texas and Oklahoma perty similar I reckon. ;)

Mention of MTV dates it 1984
Kevin L.. I'm reading this on July 5th 2020.
I think the interview was done in my living room
Kevin L...was wondering the same thing. Pretty modern for early '60's!! 😘🇨🇦✌💖
This is a great interview but you REALLY need to rename it w/ the correct date please.
Elvin is Elvin, there's no mistaking his take on the blues!
Howdy.
Am I wrong or did Elvin not even play any solos on the first Butterfield record? All the solos were done by Bloomfield if I'm not mistaken.
Yer not mistaken.
Nope, you can hear both of them. Two different tones. On East West Elvin's Guitar was up in the mix as well.
Must be later than 76, George mentioned MTV.
yeah,,Ol"Crabshaw,,don't seem to be digging the interview deal all that much..you'd think george was a detective or some other such..just the facts! Elvin"s a great guy though and man he's played some gigs from Monterey to London and still gettin it! roll on buddy!

Don't be a fool, that's not what George said.
Your not the first to play electric blues but the first to do pycodelic blues, that's what a lot of it was.

MTV was mentioned. MTV didn't exist in 1976. This interview must of been long after 1976.
1984
I was thinking Elvin was the singer.
Lightnin' was ah real sly guy! One of the best. Sorta like Charlie Patton.
George mentioned MTV... So how can this interview be from 1976?.... MTV was not around till 1981
Elvin does look young, here, though.
This is definitely not 1976, looks like 84
Old "pop top" on Elvin's necklace?
Ha! Good Catch!!!
I wish George would shut up and let Elvin talk and riff about his background.
Scott Schwebke yeah George seems hyper and talks too much.
It's because Elvin was giving 1,2 word answers.Listen more closely.
Scott Schwebke I would never, ever..ever tell Lonesome George to shut up. And you should not either.
You have to listen. Elvin needed to be prompted to speak.

Summer of '69 Elvin was top billing over the "Santana Blues Band". Can you imagine that ? Both acts were fabulous, tho. George is a great Interviewer.
I saw the "Santana Blues Band" in the summer of '69 before they played at Woodstock, they were unknown at the time. They were one of four or five opening bands with the headliner being The Grateful Dead. Great memories.

Fish fish fish we're going fishin
Little known fact: Elvin sometimes went by the nickname, "Motor Mouth".
1959 Gibson es345
"Lonesome" George Thorogood? When did he steal that? It was Lonesome Dave Peverett of Savoy Brown and Foghat way before George grabbed it.
Love Savoy Brown
Pigboy never more uncomfortable than during this horrendous interview.
Crabshaw don't care.
"A fella asked me the other day, Bishop are you a religious minded man? I said Hell yes buddy, I most certainly am. But I have my own faith, and I follow it all the way. You see, I religiously drink two six packs of Budweiser... each and every day."
Elvin looks so perturbed!
Great interview but Elvin's PR guy should have told him before the interview not to keep looking at the camera!
I'm trying to figure out what mine set I can get into so I can put a pic of a pig on my guitar. So far I can only think of naked women.

1984, not '76.
I knew a guy that had every John Lee Hooker LP, over 50, and he HATED Thoroughgood...
Elvin look's like he's getting agitated with the producers. They should just let Thoroughgood and Bishop rap and stop interrupting.
I don’t think he’s ugly at all!
His eyes are dialated.
You think they had drugs in the 70's?
MTV ... 1976 ?
Uh huh.
Ok.
NOT.
