I've always loved that song. An absolute 70s gem. Our generation was spoiled, ours was the greatest music of all time. The music from the 60s, 70s and 80s, will live forever. You can't say that about the stuff the kids listen to, today.
Kids today will be saying that about today's music 30 years from now, these are your formative years and it's why you feel this music is so good, The same will apply to kids of today, btw there is some great music being produced today, you just have to stop listening to ACDC for the 10,000th time.

I saw Elvin Bishop in a small college bar in Hammond Louisiana a long time ago. Elvin had a wireless rig on his guitar and he wandered all over the bar throughout the show. He sat at people's tables and chatted when them as he played. He was having full conversations and never missed a single lick. It was one of the most impressive things I have ever seen.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 I agree. It wasn't like singing along and knowing the guitar parts and lyrics. When he had to sing, he was on the stage as normal, when he was soloing on the guitar, he was on the floor walking around talking. It floored me then and I still don't know how he could do it.
Remember this great classic from early 1976. I was in 8th grade. My mom was a Country Western music fan, so we mostly listened to Country Western music in the car with her. My dad's music aligned more with mine, which was top 40. Anyway, while driving to my hometown, my mom and I were going to surprise my sister by coming down to see her for the weekend. Going through Pacheco Pass in our 1972 Mercury Montego, I fell asleep. Waking up halfway through the mountain, I heard Fooled Around and Fell in Love playing on the radio. She had used one of the radio pre sets to find a radio station that would come in. Lucky break for me because the only station that would come in on our pre-set was 610 KFRC. For some reason, maybe because I wasn't being tortured by Country Western music, Fooled Around and Fell in Love just sounded so right. Today, when I hear that song, I fondly look back on the special weekend we had visiting my sister. Just yesterday, while running errands with my mom, it came on the radio. It took me right back to that weekend so long ago. It is a blessing that 47 years later, I can still hang out with my mom.
Fooled Around and Fell in Love, Jane and Sara are three songs I never change when they come on the radio. Three superlative and very different tunes, and Mickey's vocals are superb on all three.
This interview was a real treat! Mickey's has serious pipes and his vocal on Fooled Around is superb. Honorable mention goes Elvin's solo on this tune (cut short from the extended version to accommodate radio play) with it's wonderful tone that reaches out and grabs you. Hats off to Gideon for making this whole thing possible. Thanks Adam!
You gotta realize that Elvins coming from the unequalled Paul Butterfield Blues Band. If Mickey had hung around a bit longer he could have been a new Sammy Hagar coming from Montrose. He split while that song still played in daily rotation. He got plenty of spark with Starship though. Elvin Bishop has always promoted his people. Sounds like a lot of people now remember the song but not the entire body of work. Bummer.
Check this. 40 years later he sounds the same. Exactly the same! And, it looks like he' doing it effortlessly. ruclips.net/video/mxLuTQYARwM/видео.html
Thank you for giving well-deserved credit to Mickey Thomas. He tends to be vastly overlooked and underrated but I definitely consider him to be one of the best male vocalists of the rock era. "Fooled Around And Fell In Love" is an outstanding song and one of those songs that goes into the should've been #1 category.
All these years down the line, I still enjoy this song, and especially enjoy the four-beat drum thing during the pause in the lyrics: "I fooled around and fell...bump bump bump bump...in love."
Mickey Thomas' voice soars!! Jefferson Airplane was part of my youth for sure from the 70's till now! Mickey's candidness and friendliness made for fantastic moments Adam!! One of your best interviews!! Thanks.
Man, he still has the pipes! Awesome song, and it's an earworm tune for me. If Silly Love Songs beat it out then I understand... You're right Professor, Mickey deserves more discussion when talking about singers who can bring the goods to a song!
Talk about making the most of any opportunity that arises, Mickey paid his dues before he becomes a star in his own right. I didn't know that was him singing on this classic until today, he really knocked it out of the park on those vocals you can hear the southern gospel in it. Great whole story about how he started his whole career, fantastic interview professor
@@MyName-pl7zn Similar story: I didn’t know for years that Martha Wash sang on C+C’s Gonna Make You Sweat because she was denied credit for her vocals. It’s so unjust.
I've always loved Mickey, such a great vocalist! He, Brad Delp, and Steve Perry were the Three Tenors of the rock world! And he was so amazing in Fooled Around. That song is a life long favorite of mine.
I always felt Mickey was one of a very few singers who could have handled Steve Perry material and done it justice, other than Steve Perry himself...not saying he was better than Steve, or even as good...but he was/is right up there...and his voice has held up very well over time, also...Arnel can do it, but will he be able to do it at Steve and Mickey's age?....
What a soulful voice Mickey Thomas has! Awesome interview, Adam! This song along with the interesting guitar riffs, "Jane," and "Find Your Way Back" are some personal favorites and get cranked to "10" on the stereo whenever I hear them!
I think the best decade to be alive musically speaking was during the 70s, but it couldn't have happened without the music of the 50s and 60s! Professor, I ❤ your show!!! Every episode for me is like a trip back in time! Amazing!!
Mickey Thomas had a killer voice! Many people at that time didn't make the connection between Mickey singing for Elvin Bishop then Jefferson Starship. Speaking of Jefferson Starship........... how many other groups could boast 3 lead singers at the same time...... Grace Slick, Marty Balin, and Mickey Thomas. Amazing. Thanks for this Professor. Maybe you can do an episode on Marty Balin sometime. 👍
Great interview! "Fool Around And Fell In Love" hit me like a brick. The song made you want to sing along. Mickey Thomas has an incredible voice. Humble beginnings to successful music legacy. Thanks for the music and the inspiration, Mickey.
Awesome episode Professor! Mickey Thomas has always been one of my favorites! Awesome interview! Great to hear his history! Thanks for keeping the music alive!
It’s so great when you find out the guy behind one of your favorite songs is also just a great guy and someone you have a great deal in common with as a fellow Southern boy! Thanks for this, Professor!
I'm 40 y.o. and was presented to this masterpiece by the Guardians of the Galaxy. All the songs from the soundtrack are amazing, but this one caught my attention on a car ride to my hometown which is 140 miles from where I live now. I was blown away by the vocal performance. Bluesy, churchy, awesom-y... Played it several times down the road... And singing along. Or trying to. Thank you Mr. Thomas!
This song brings back sooooo many memories. I graduated High School in 1976 so this song was a big part of radio airplay everyday. Love the vocals. I danced with many a good looking young lady to this song before I met my wife in 1978. I wasn’t a Casanova by any means but every guy felt they were a stud when this song played. Great interview Adam!
Mickey, Carrack & Paul Rodgers are voices that everyone knows from that era but often can't place their names because they had hits with different bands under different conditions. This channel is literally made to celebrate the career of guys like Mickey with many "Did you know?" moments. .
I still can’t believe it took that long for this beautiful song with awesome vocals and guitar to make it to the top. I always loved it and still play it regularly bringing back great memories of a great time in my life!!
Great interview! Fun one too. I love hearing the stories about how great songs came to be. It don’t get better than that. And what a classic. Such a good song. I don’t think anyone else could have sang that song better than Mickey. It just wouldn’t have gotten the justice it deserved. It was just meant to be sung by him imo. No doubt about it. Enjoyed this one Professor, thanks! ❤️💜💚
Oh, this was a fantastic video - one of your best - what a great and casual chat you had with Mickey Thomas. Great to learn so much - and appreciate that great song all the more.
Great interview with such a great voice. Song was big in my HS graduation year. Very cool, albeit ironic that it took so long to hit #1. Saw him in concert with Starship a number of years ago along with :38 Special & the Guess Who. Thanks for another great show. 👍🙏
Great song, and Mickey Thomas just seems really cool. I could sit and listen to him talk about music all day. I was like you Adam, I also discovered him growing up in the 80’s when Starship was popular. And discovered after that he was the person who sang “Fooled Around And Fell In Love”. Another great interview Adam, keep up the great work.
And here I always thought Elvin Bishop sang that song! Props to Mickey Thomas and his amazing voice, and mad props to the Professor for another great interview! Love how you let them talk and make it about THEM and help the story come out!
Mickey Thomas recorded a solo album in 1977 on the MCA label, and Elvin Bishop guested as guitar picker on a few tracks. I remember hearing this song for the first time and thought “Elvin Bishop sure has some pipes”. It got some serious airplay at our campus radio station in the summer of 1976. Come to find out it was Mickey Thomas singing. He still has some pipes. Fine interview.
Thank you for this segment. I was a teenager when the song was in new release and have always loved those soulful vocals that I thought belonged to Mr. Bishop. It was great to learn more about this wonderful song.
For years I fid not know it was Mickey who sang Fooled Around - but always loved the song. Found out about him by watching a video on You Tube - great performance. Since then, have watched him whenever I can ... I still watch the Fooled Around video often. As has been said, he is still underrated! Thank you for the great interview. God bless you.
Mickey Thomas is phenomenal. Totally underrated. The songs he sang with Starship were so amazing. Sara, We Built This City and Nothing's Gonna Stop Us.
Fascinating interview. Such an amazing vocalist, and very humble. The entire track was phenomenal, BTW. Elvin's awesome solo, Reni's backing vocals, groove, all perfect.
Best channel ever for bringing music history back to the light. Why this channel isn't a network tv show is beyond me, too good. Great interview talent right here.
The chemistry between Adam and Mickey is just tremendous. Like two old friends who have such deep passion, knowledge, respect and appreciation of the music and its history. I could listen to them chat all day long. As for underrated vocalist, maybe Billy Idol could get a nod. Simon LeBon is another and his voice is as strong as ever, too.
WOW, Professor. You really nailed it with this one. Mickey is relaxed and articulate, your research was in depth, the clips you interspersed when mentioning other bands were high-quality: I give you ten out of ten! Coincidentally, I stumbled across the Midnight Special version of this song about a month ago & have been loving it even more than when first released.
Mickey is is one of the BEST. Have seen him multiple times. Fooled Around and Fell In Love - One of the best songs ever, and no one does it better than Mickey.
What a great interview and story. I've seen Mickey and his band play a few shows, and they were always great! I was lucky enough to meet Mickey at one show his band played in Lancaster, CA. He was such a cool, laid-back guy.
I gotta say Professor, you’ve been providing great content for a long while, but you have totally been hitting out of the park with these past few shows
In the early 80s, I saw Jefferson Starship in concert (I think the tour was for the Modern Times album). One of the highlights of the night was a performance of "Fooled Around and Fell in Love," with Grace giving a quick intro that told the background of the song. And of course, Mickey absolutely killed it! I've never stopped feeling lucky to be there for that whole concert, and that stellar performance :)
I was just thinking about this amazing song because I heard it earlier, and now I saw that you just did an interview with Mickey Thomas, the guy who performed vocals on it. Awesome!
I remember the number 3 chart position because I used to write down the top 40s when listening to Casey Kasem. Silly Love Songs went on to be such a huge number one hit because it coincided with Paul McCartney's returned to the US on tour for the first time in 10 years. I wasn't extremely familiar with Elvin Bishop back then, although I knew the name. I just assumed that he was singing. It wasn't until years later that I found out it was Mickey Thomas, what a fantastic voice!
As soon as I hear the organ intro, I am instantly transported back to 1976, when I was listening to this on AM radio, with the ambience making it sound like it came straight from heaven.
What a great interview! Mickey sounds like a really down to earth and humble guy. You don’t see too many rock stars giving so much credit to others for his success. Ego is a real thing in music/bands, but he gave Gideon credit for not only discovering him, but for mentoring him with his vocals and helping him become the great vocalist that he is. It’s criminal that he didn’t get the album credits for singing “Fooled Around And Fell In Love.” Sadly, such is the nature of this business. Thank you so much for another incredible episode, @Professor of Rock! In my humble opinion, you’re the best at what you do, and bring so much knowledge and history, and always respect your guests and let them talk. Bravo!
What's funny about listening to Mickey talk about the Beatles at Atlanta Stadium is that Mickey sang in the stadium years later with Elvin's band as an opening act for ZZ Top's Worldwide Texas Tour!
I was at Winterland in SanFran the night Elvin unveiled Fooled Around. The people liked it so much Mickey sang it 2 more times for a double encore. Great song but Mickey was the key ingredient.
Funny, I had no idea Mickey was the vocalist on this song, but I have always loved it. One of my favorites he sings is his cover of "Dream a Little Dream" from that soundtrack, particularly the duet version with Mel Torme. That probably reveals my age a bit. 😂
I saw Elvin Bishop in the late 80's in a small bar in Sunnyvale CA. When he started playing it my first thought was "I didn't know that was his song" After being fixated on the band for half the song I looked around the bar. Time pretty much stood still because no one was moving. Not even the bar staff. Everyone was fixed on Elvin and whoever the singer was at the time. Reminded me of the scene in Purple Rain, when Prince plays the title cut. The band picked up on it too. Afterward Elvin even said "yea we get to hear him sing that every night."
I think Burton Cummings of the Guess Who is underrated. At least under appreciated. Also, Mickey Thomas, of course. His voice is still golden. Amazing that he still sings with such clarity and range.
You have one of the best music related video sites. I am a bit old for the 80's stuff, but the 60s and 70's stuff you knock right out of the park! My son got to meet Mickey when he was staying up in Seattle I think on a Starship tour. He hung out with him on the rooftop lounge. He knew who he was because of dad....
Paul Cotton of Poco, Roger Hodgson of Supertramp, Todd Rundgren, Paul Rogers of Bad Company, Steve Walsh of Kansas, Morten Harket of Aha, Phil Collins of Genesis, Jon Anderson of Yes, Burton Cummings of Guess Who, Micky Dolenz of The Monkees, Karen Carpenter, 3 Dog Night ( all three, Danny Hutton, Chuck Negron, Corey Wells), John Farnham, Michael Been of The Call, There's just so many great voices!!!!!!! @@dgarve A classic.
Jane is a vastly underrated rocker.
I agree. That guitar solo is flat out scary! Thanks Robster!
Elvin is such a skilled guitarist.

He’s a really fun guy too.
All these years down the line, I still enjoy this song, and especially enjoy the four-beat drum thing during the pause in the lyrics: "I fooled around and fell...bump bump bump bump...in love."
That part is so clever! You are right.
I love this song! As a kid I thought Elvin Bishop was singing it. Then, when I heard this voice on Jefferson Starship, I was like wait a minute! 🤔
I know, right?
Fooled Around & Fell In Love… totally nostalgic of Myrtle Beach, bicentennial summer, July 1976! Mickey’s vocals slayed too!
🇺🇸 🏖️
Dude…one of the best interviews yet, with one of the coolest singers in rock. Thanks Mickey, and thanks Professor!!
Mickey Thomas' voice soars!! Jefferson Airplane was part of my youth for sure from the 70's till now! Mickey's candidness and friendliness made for fantastic moments Adam!! One of your best interviews!! Thanks.
Love Micky! Fooled Around & Fell in Love is my favorite song of all time. Top of my Life's Playlist. Love it. ❤❤❤
Love this song. Mickey killed it so many times. I feel he is underrated as a singer.
No question. Thanks Mark.
I love Grace Slick but Mickey should get more love.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 I totally agree. Grace got them in the door, Mickey took them further. Good point!
@@markglabinski526 Nailed it!
Man, he still has the pipes! Awesome song, and it's an earworm tune for me. If Silly Love Songs beat it out then I understand... You're right Professor, Mickey deserves more discussion when talking about singers who can bring the goods to a song!
He's one of the most underrated singers of the rock era. Period.
@@ProfessorofRockMost definitely!
We’ve had ENOUGH of silly love songs.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980Yea no Comparison ! Foled around blows Silly Love Songs out!!!!!!!
Great song. I never get tired of it. Every time I hear it, it lifts me up. Thank you, Mickey Thomas, for sharing your incredible gift with us
Talk about making the most of any opportunity that arises, Mickey paid his dues before he becomes a star in his own right. I didn't know that was him singing on this classic until today, he really knocked it out of the park on those vocals you can hear the southern gospel in it. Great whole story about how he started his whole career, fantastic interview professor
That's how it was back then. Pay your dues. It's brought character!
I’m surprised you didn’t know it was him! It really does remind you of gospel/church music.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 I know right, I always assumed it was Bishop, oops
@@MyName-pl7zn Similar story: I didn’t know for years that Martha Wash sang on C+C’s Gonna Make You Sweat because she was denied credit for her vocals. It’s so unjust.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 I have never understood the recording industry so many stories of people being done wrong instead of praised for their work
I've always loved Mickey, such a great vocalist! He, Brad Delp, and Steve Perry were the Three Tenors of the rock world! And he was so amazing in Fooled Around. That song is a life long favorite of mine.
Totally agree! I might add Lou Graham in the mix
@@ronconrad2867 oh yes, Lou was amazing in his prime! Have you listened to his solo albums? So great.
Robin Zander has some great vocals! But I agree with those 3…
I always felt Mickey was one of a very few singers who could have handled Steve Perry material and done it justice, other than Steve Perry himself...not saying he was better than Steve, or even as good...but he was/is right up there...and his voice has held up very well over time, also...Arnel can do it, but will he be able to do it at Steve and Mickey's age?....
I agree with these three, I would add Rick Emmett from Triumph too.
What a soulful voice Mickey Thomas has! Awesome interview, Adam! This song along with the interesting guitar riffs, "Jane," and "Find Your Way Back" are some personal favorites and get cranked to "10" on the stereo whenever I hear them!
Super interview! 👍 I saw him do a free Starship concert several years ago and he still nailed the vocals with gusto! ❤👏
I agree. Will do! Thanks Roger!
Marty's vocals on " Hearts" is Beautifully Amazing, 1 of my all time favorite songs ❤️
I can only think of 2 right off: Fleetwood Mac - Buckingham, Nicks, McVie and the Beatles - John, Paul and George but there sure aren't many

What a great interview. Super cool cat with great vocals. He’s another one who has sooo many great stories. Thanks, Professor. Nice job!
I'm 40 y.o. and was presented to this masterpiece by the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Thanks Steve! Rock on.
1976 was my “Vintage Year of the Year” last year!
A truly great vocalist and a real nice, humble guy!
Great interview - Mickey seems like a down-to-earth guy. Most underrated vocalist - Paul Carrack of Ace and Mike and the Mechanics.
Paul Carrack is wonderful.
Anyone who has heard Paul Carrack sing - knows he’s phenomenal.
Tempted by Squeeze , he sings lead vocal on and it’s a killer voice. ⭐️😊
Mickey, Carrack & Paul Rodgers are voices that everyone knows from that era but often can't place their names because they had hits with different bands under different conditions. This channel is literally made to celebrate the career of guys like Mickey with many "Did you know?" moments.
.
Absolutely loooove this song, still in my playlist today!
I turn it up every time it comes on the radio. It’s a great song.
One of my all time favorite songs, and Mickey is so great. Love his early work with Jefferson starship too.
😊 *GREAT song!* 😊
*FASCINATING story!*
THanks Mark! Have a great weekend.
Simon was also hot as hell! I can safely say we all had a crush on him.
This voice and this song reminds me so much of when I was a kid.
This was a terrific episode. Thanks dude
Thanks Troy!
What a great and humble guy...wow.
He's awesome.
He’s very sweet.
Mickey's voice....always tops in my book🤩
For sure.
Never disappoints.
And of course Diana Ross was sandwiched between them.
As soon as I hear the organ intro, I am instantly transported back to 1976, when I was listening to this on AM radio, with the ambience making it sound like it came straight from heaven.
WHBQ out of Memphis played this. Rick Dees was DJ before going to Los Angeles…
Mickey and the band really knocked it out of the park with that one. What an unforgettable classic.
A-gamers!
That sounds insane.
I was at Winterland in SanFran the night Elvin unveiled Fooled Around. The people liked it so much Mickey sang it 2 more times for a double encore. Great song but Mickey was the key ingredient.
I always think of Boogie Nights when I hear this song…and that also has a phenomenal soundtrack (movie was brilliant too…) Great interview!!
Funny, I had no idea Mickey was the vocalist on this song, but I have always loved it. One of my favorites he sings is his cover of "Dream a Little Dream" from that soundtrack, particularly the duet version with Mel Torme. That probably reveals my age a bit. 😂
You’re an old soul.
Heck yeah I was a 70's kid and that song brings back some great memories and it never gets old. Great interview Prof
That Purple Rain scene was mindblowing.
I got to see Elvin Bishop at the Golden Bear in Huntington Beach in the mid 80s. What a great show. But my favorite song by Mickey is Jane.
Great episode and interview Mickey Thomas most certainly fits that category.
Paul Cotton of Poco, Roger Hodgson of Supertramp, Todd Rundgren, Paul Rogers of Bad Company, Steve Walsh of Kansas, Morten Harket of Aha, Phil Collins of Genesis, Jon Anderson of Yes, Burton Cummings of Guess Who, Micky Dolenz of The Monkees, Karen Carpenter, 3 Dog Night ( all three, Danny Hutton, Chuck Negron, Corey Wells), John Farnham, Michael Been of The Call,
There's just so many great voices!!!!!!!

It certainly did!
His voice is absolutely amazing and it was great to see him talk about his story.
Absolutely fascinating. So cool how entertainment and media today can bring back the classics, just reaffirming how timeless they are. Music as a whole is timeless. Cheers as always.
