A Planter Bench anyone can make!

- In this video I build a planter bench for my mother. I visited her home in Moncton New Brunswick during the week that Hurricane Dorian reached Atlantic Canada. Luckily, my mother’s home was unscathed, but we were left without power for a little while. I wanted to make her something while I was there, which meant that I had to use hand tools. I used pressure treated wood as my mother wants to stain it (which will be done in the spring) to match her deck, which is also made from pressure treated lumber. As I didn’t know when we would get power back, I designed something very simple that didn’t require any complicated joints or cuts.
The bench part is made out of 2”x6”s and the planters are made from 1”x6” with support from some 4”x4”s and 2”x2”s and some scrap 2”x4”s cut to size.

What a great son! I would have liked to seen her reaction to it. It looks wonderful! But... I do have a bone to pick. You said day one was a no power... hand tool day. The sawing was looking great, but didnt look like a standard screw driver that you were using! You only get partial credit. LOL. Kidding aside, that planter is better than the ones I have seen on RUclips because you incorporated a bench. Brilliant idea!
Hahah thanks! I would have filmed her reaction, but she didn't want to be on camera. I would have ended up using a screw driver if I hadn't gotten power back as the battery died after the first day! P.s. I used my hand to operate the drill doesn't that count as a hand tool! 😂😂😂 thanks for watching 🍻
Great way to honor your Mom. Two thumbs up!
Thank you very much 😁 👍
Excellent job Grant - loved the timber throwing sequence. I wish I could work that quickly! The 'flanged' tops of the planters are a very nice finishing touch. Good job mate, thanks for letting us see.
Thanks Mark! The timber throwing sequence really helped to get some of the tension out after all the handsawing! I appreciate your support and kind words 🍻
Very nice work 👏 Very good design.
Thanks, it was fun to build something a bit simpler to accommodate the lack of power.
Looks great Grant, Mom is beaming I bet. 👍
She is! You should see the Facebook post she wrote to share with her friends! 😂 thanks for watching 🍻
Great project Grant! Looks like a nice place to sit.
Thanks Bob! It was a fun project to do while visiting my mother. Nothing like a power outage to get you doing things creatively 😊
Great project and it turned out lovely I bet your mother is super happy with it! Nice work 👍🏻😃
Thanks Kirstie! My mother is super happy, but she would be super happy with anything I made! 😂😂 I appreciate the kind words 😀
hello master.I love flowers and nature. This product was really great. Very good quality and convenient. It looks nice in the garden of our house. Congratulations.
Thanks! It was a fun simple build, thanks for watching!
Handtools only! Caveman style I dig it!
When you have no power, you have to make do somehow! 😂 thanks for watching 🍻
Jig saw (3 minute mark) is a power tool.
Beautiful man, she’ll love that for many years to come!
Thanks Rob, I hope it lasts many years! I guess I will have to visit often to check up on it 😁
Bro at 3:38 you took a circular saw and ripped that 2x4 like a boss!
Thanks! You gotta make due with what you have 😂😂
Beast build and awesome present!
Thanks! I actually just spoke to my mom this week and asked how it survived the winter. She said it still looks great 😁
Wonderful looking bench. You could also hide a little bit of storage under there.
Thanks Mike! You are right, and who doesn't need more storage! 😂🍻👍
Great beginning my friend 😊 Let nothing stop you. Be like the hurricane 😃 Brilliant end result 😊 ॐ
Thanks Yogi, that is some great advice. 👍😀🙏
Enjoyed the video and the build turned out amazing! Great job on the bench planter!
Thanks Jeff! I appreciate the kind words and the support! 🍻
That came out great! well done!
Thanks, it was a fun challenge with the limited tools. 😃
Nicely done! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
Thanks Fred! I appreciate your support 👍🍻
I need one of those at my house. Great project.
Thanks Don! I can't wait to see you build one and make it even better than I could! Thanks for watching 🍻
The Grant Alexander while I have a spot for a bench planter doesn’t mean I’ll be making one any time soon. 😁 I have a lot more projects ahead of it on my list. Now, if my wife moves it up on my list the build will come sooner. 😄🥴
It’s been so hot and humid here that I don’t get much shop time. This morning I was sweating so much out in the shop that as I was making a cut on the band saw this morning I suddenly couldn’t see clearly. A big drop of sweat covered the entire right lens of my glasses. 😮 NOT GOOD. Fortunately it was a straight cut.
@@wb_finewoodworking hahaha! Well I hope the heat dies down before she asks for it to be done!
The Grant Alexander she’s already ordered Christmas presents. I was cutting the turning blanks on the band saw this morning. 😜
@@wb_finewoodworking well it looks like you are safe for a bit!
My dude, that's an awesome and inspiring bench design! You've got me wanting to build my own 👍
Thanks! I hope you do make your own. Send me a message when you are done, I'd love to see it (Instagram is best @the_grant_alexander)
@@TheGrantAlexander Following you on IG now. The Leaning Garage 👍
Nice build. I'm inspired by it to build something like this on a newly constructed composite deck I just finished. Also, that's one serious saw. Good Video!
Thanks Michael! It was definitely not the best saw for getting clean lines, but you use what you have! Good luck on your project 👍
Well done, good job !
Thank you very much! 😁😁
Beautiful friend
Thank you!
Liked and subscribed I was looking to do this in my own garden ..gave me great inspiration
Thanks so much! Good luck!
Its gorgeous
Thank you Erica!
that turned out great!!
Thanks! 🍻
Nice job!
Thanks! It was nice to make something for my mom 😃
That looks good Mate 👍
Thanks! It was a fun build 👍
Hello my friend. simple but good idea. Good to watch you. I watched the planting work bench. congratulations. Thank you for sharing. I made a balcony table and flower pots. :-) warm embrace. greetings....
Thanks for watching Şahane bilgiler. I appreciate your support!
@@TheGrantAlexander thank you very much for your support. huge greetings.
That turned out great, Grant! Extra credit for the handsaw work. Noticed you didn't have the customary bottle of Landshark, lol. Hope whatever was in the can was just as good!
Thanks Stan! It was fun using a handsaw, it makes me want to restore some of the old handsaws I have laying around the garage. The beer I was drinking was some very yummy local craft beer from New Brunswick and it was quite good! Thanks for watching 🍻
Keep at it man!
Thanks Andrew! 🍻
I love this project! The bench incorporated into the planters is amazing.
P.S. My arms are tired just watching you cut all those boards!
Thanks Dimitri! If I had known the power was coming back on the following day I probably would have waited. My arms would have thanked me and it would have been minutes instead of hours (with more accuracy to boot) Thanks for watching! 🍻
great job bud!!!!!!
Thanks Chris! I appreciate your support 🍻
this look awesome
Thanks!
Love this idea dude... See the hand tools didn't last long 😂🛠️
Thanks! Ya, as soon as the power was back on they were gone! Spinning blades powered by big motors for me! 😁 thanks for watching 🍻
That's awesome.
Thanks 😁
Have yourself a cold one 👍🏁
Thanks Rob! It's 7am here, but since you said to do it, I cracked open a cold one and I'm guzzling it down now! 🍺🍺👍
@@TheGrantAlexander haha, good idea, might join you 😆
@@TakamiWoodshop it's 4pm here now, so I think I am ready for some more!
*Great project!! I found you on an Instagram post that the Wood Yogi made the other day. Clicked the bell so I will see all your uploads :) nice work and looking forward to your future vids :)*
That wood yogi is a great guy! Thanks for watching, I appreciate your support 🍻
At last I found my way here. Wow. The teeth on that saw look wicked, but too rough for crosscut. It is a throwaway one? Right? I am teaching the students 'tenon saws' practical on Saturday next. The bench/planter turned our rather nice, but I saw it on Instagram. You will certainly be the favourite son for some time to come 😂
Thanks Pascal, you know that old saying beggars can't be choosers? 😂 this saw is more for doing framing in a house. If you look at the handle it even can be used as a speed square to draw 90s and 45s! I hope I am the favourite for a while! Thanks for watching 🍻
I liked it better watching you struggling with hand tools 😢🤔 very nice result mate, was that cedar ?
Hahah, thanks Dirk. It is more fun to watch others use hand tools, it's true! It was pressure treated softwood. That way my mom can stain it to match her deck next spring. Thanks for watching 🍻
Loved the way it came out. Do you remember the dimensions of the actual planter boxes?
Thanks, it was a rough design, but if i recall correctly it was a 24"x24" square and approximately 28" tall. I used 1x6 wood (so approximately 3/4"X5 1/2") I hope that helps.
My mum whpuld love something like that
You should make her one! I'd love to see your version of it! 👍 thanks for watching 🍻
Mmm, lumber sauce!
Haha ya! It's the best sauce 🤣
Hi There - This is lovely and looks great and I am inspired to make one - I had a question as I live the UK are you able to provide the measurement in Length x Width x Depth
Thanks so much, I am always happy to hear when I have inspired someone. I have all the details in this article, including measurements in metric www.instructables.com/id/Simple-Planter-Bench Hope it helps, and I am happy to answer any further questions
How good is electricity?
Electricity is the best!!!! But i was feeling almost in shape after that 🤣🤣
great man ! keep it up ! subscri... !
Thanks Mirec!
Wait a minute, that’s not Landshark.
Oh no! I think you are right. My sponsors will be furious! 😂😂
Really cool design! I thought you’d actually do the whole thing with hand tools! Haha.
I would have if the power stayed off. Actually might have needed to break out the screwdriver as the power was running out on the drill! 😂😂 thanks for watching 🍻
Oh yeah wait, the power came back on. Cheater!
Hahahahahah! Not cheating, just showing multiple ways of doing things 😉
i thought this was gonna be a minecraft video…
Haha I could see that
There's a reason power tool were made
Do they work during a hurricane?
Well deserved beer at the end mate. Loos really nice there with the flowers!
Glad the electricity came back for ya...Cheers!
Thanks! My shoulder is also glad the electricity came back, I am still feeling it a week later! I appreciate your support 🍻
Looks great, love the design. Might have to steal it 😁😂
Thanks, I am happy when people "steal" my design. I am sure after seeing how I made it, you can make it even better!
Love it mate. Nice one again 👊🍻 cheers
Thanks! It was a super fun to make. I wish I had your handsaw skills! It would have made things much easier/faster😎
@@TheGrantAlexander 😅 just use it more! 💪
Great idea - but music gave me a headache............sorry
Thanks! No worries about the music you can always turn the volume down 😉
I’m so glad that you are all safe and your mom’s home is ok! It was so nice of you to make this bench for her. It turned out beautiful!
Thanks! It was fun to make something while I was in town visiting for the week. It kept me occupied while my son napped during the day (another good reason to use hand tools, much quieter!) Thanks for watching 🍻
34k holy smokes man!!
Thanks man! It was a fun build 😁
That moment when you wish you had a cordless circular saw. I think I got tired just watching you do all that sawing by hand.
Seriously though, I'd like to make somethings for my Dad when I visit so you gave me some ideas.
If we were at my house I would have been good to go! (I even have nicer hand saws) I didn't even film most of it, but luckily my mother's partner was able to help out so I didn't completely wear out my shoulder! I hope I get a chance to see what you make 😀👍🍻 thanks for watching 🍻
That looks awesome! I bet your mom really appreciates the extra elbow grease that went into the “no power” stage of the build.
Thanks, I think you are right, she even got me an extra beer that day! 😂😂 thanks for watching 👍🍻
Awesome job and we really admire that the loss of power didn't slow you down. We're sure your mom is very happy to have something that she can use everyday that you made.
Thanks Henri and Paula! I was happy when the power came back on, I don't know how those hand tool only people do it! Thanks for watching, I appreciate your support!👍🏻🍻
Nice video Just 9 more subscriber till your at 300 how menny hours did this project take ?
Thanks! It is exciting to see the continued growth. I'd say it was max 5 hours (would have been less with power). I was building during the time my son was napping during the week. Thanks for watching 🍻
Great job! You gave me some new ideas to kick around in my head!
Thanks, it was fun working without power (but not fun enough that I wouldn't do it all the time!) Appreciate you checking out the video 🍻
Don't tell my mom you did that, she will be bugging me to build her something! Great job
I won't tell if you don't tell! Thanks for watching 🍻
I bet you hoped that battery drill didn't go flat while power was out.Top build!!
That was a big fear of mine! Especially without a brace and bit or egg beater around to assist with screwing in those deck screws! Thanks for watching 🍻
Cool results! I definitely have to make one when the weather turns to spring!
Thanks Dave! It was a fun project and something anyone can do ☺️ can't wait to see what you make
3:16. The reverse grip jigsaw. Pro move. #secretwizard
Hahahha! Thanks, and I love the hashtag! 👍😂
I absolutely loved this project. I am sure it was put together so quickly with the help of Steve. Lol
Thanks Mom!
Nice bench, good job!
Thank you very much 👍🍻
how many 1x6 did you use?
Thanks for asking, i used 12 1x6x8. 🍻
nice thank you
No problem, happy to help 👍
what are the measurements on the 4x4?
how high are the 2x2 on the planters
Wicked!
Thanks Rob! 👍🍻
