    Thanks John. I gave up woodwork 30ish years ago because of life,family and work. I've been getting back into it since our first granddaughter came along. Love your video's and the planter boxes are great. I've forgotten a lot so it great to have reminders and you're also teaching me sooooo much. So thank you. Also thanks so much for your recommendation for tommy. Love his channel and love being there from the start. Cheers Sam

    I dunno John what with Tommy designing my workshop bits and you designing my garden bits I think I've got a design masterclass all for free I just hope the 2 of you don't mind a bit (or a lot) of plagiarism by me 😜
    Really nice and simple project that even a klutz like me should be able to put together easily enough. Thanks for the videos.

    Nice design, built something similar a couple of years back and you’re right non pressurised timber will rot rapidly in Ireland. They need replacing and think I’ll go with your design. Way simpler

    Sound quite nice John. Also you could always cut some rubber and place under the feet to lift them off the wet floor will keep him lasting a bit longer bit like damp course would do

    I love this build, it could be just what I need. I have promised to make a friend two Peter Millard (10MinuteWorkshop) style Versailles Planters for her 70th birthday. However, at the moment the 12mm hardwood ply that I need is not available where I am in the UK (not to mention that fact that the cost of some of other wood has jumped by £20.) I should be able to get the material required for this build. (Or I could just save money by making them out of solid gold.)

    Hey John great to see you back working on garden projects! I robbed your planter design and used it to create planters with concrete anchors hidden in them, which held up supports for a pergola in an area where digging a foundation or anchor bolts were not an option!

    My favourite finish at moment is Cuprinol wood preserver for rough sawn wood. Works great on treated timber. Various shades though I'm keen on black at moment. I'm thinking of using different colours, eg for verticals and horizontals

    What is find is great is to screw a small piece of plastic timber
    To the bottom of the legs to keeps them off the ground and also paint them with some bitchumen paint.

      Heavy duty adjustable castors work well, especially where ground not flat. Will make a BBQ workstation along these lines, likely with power for fridge or coolbox

      Its best to go with un-threated wood for growing vegetables, I'm no expert on this so you will need to do a bit of research

    Hi John, hope all is well fella? Need some advice, made one of the planter seats/boxes and another 4 single planter boxes the way you did in your video and they have come out great. However after staining them and letting dry and then turning them over to stain the bottom of the feet and in between the legs. I turned them back over after 24 hrs and noticed the mitres had opened up in some cases by a few millimetres. I presume this was down to the wood maybe being still slightly wet from the stain and then the heavy weight of the planter being upside down and pushing on the mitred border, which has obviously opened it up. Do you have any advice on how to fill these openings as they look awful and especially after me trying so hard initially to get a really tight mitre!
    I don’t really want to take them apart and recut the mitres if I can help it? As I did join the mitres using pocket holes and its actually a pain to try and unscrew them out. I did also try putting a screw in from the edge to see if it would tighten the gap up, but to no avail 😩. Any advice John would be appreciated 🙏🏼👍. I know they are only planters and may split over time, but it’s so frustrating as i know it was my fault they opened up so soon. 🤯
    By the way one of them I didn’t turn over to stain the feet and the mitre is still spot on.
    Take care
    Mark

    • @JohnMcGrathManInShed
      @JohnMcGrathManInShed  3 года назад +1

      I'm not sure what happened maybe the wood had a high moisture content and has now contracted. If you don't want to re-cut than maybe some fillers if the gap is not to big and re-stain.

    • @markgeezey1809
      @markgeezey1809 3 года назад +1

      @@JohnMcGrathManInShed
      Thanks John, i’ll give that a try. I think it’s due to the weight mate pressing down on the mitres when they were upside down. As they do weigh a fair weight. The only reason I say that, is the one I didn’t turnover the mitres are spot on. I’ll give it a try with filler or maybe some sort of glued splint on the wide ones. Otherwise i think re-mitreing is the only option. 🤯🤣. By the way I have ordered a the metal cyclone from Axminster for my twin motor record power camvac and will let you know if its any good🤞🤞.
      Thanks again John and look forward to the next video.
