I recommend buying graded coins. Not worth the amount of time and guess work on a coin's grade to end up cleaned. Then there's also the cost. The cartwheel luster sometimes gives clues if a coin has been cleaned. Good luck!
One of the coins that was missing, was a CAC graded coin that was labeled as cleaned which I cracked out and sent to PCGS. They straight graded it, I cheated and looked at the online grades since that submission was missing. Sometimes signs of cleaning are super obvious, fine hairlines, too much brightness and other times its a judgement call for something not looking quite right. After looking closer at the coins I submitted the California commem and bust half were definitely judgement calls, the rest of the coins I would say were actually cleaned.
Thanks for watching. Ya, I definitely have a hard time hiding my frustration, hah. But man, waiting 2 months, looking forward to seeing those grades, really hurts.
You won big time on the gold. If you sell that you get a profit overall. And the Prospector Commemorative from a dealer at $132? He certainly thought whizzed at that price. PCGS has been rough on me too and I suggest that you never go for the show grading with a toned coin. Easiest money ever for their questionable color grade.
Thanks, ya I guess the gold appreciation bailed me out a bit here. I got most of them on whatnot from wittercoin, so it's all auction. Plenty of times coins go under what they should, but also plenty go over. Often see him sell gold under melt.
These results definitely were not the greatest, but I have gotten lots of great coins from them at very good deals. I constantly see them selling gold at or just below melt, which is the best deal you can pretty much get anywhere using a credit card.
Hey there, it's been a minute. Damn brother, that was brutal ! Of course I can only see so much through the screen but at minimum 2 didn't look cleaned. The first trade $ , which by the way looks freakin amazing...and the barber. Who knows anymore, the other 3 are stepping up the grades and opinions since cac has become the shi$t$ and giggles of grading. I have a stack of morgans I need graded but can't decide whom to buy a membership from...the guy I used for 30 years is no longer able so I'm on my own. Anyways, I felt the disappointment with you..that's gotta be tough! Take care, Russ
Thanks. Ya, I can accept the cleanings on most of the coins, but not the California commemorative, but it is what it is. Thankfully with the prices I paid on most of them, even with the cleaned grades, I'll do ok. Thinking I'll be sending some over to greatcollections to convert the money over to more of coins I collect. Funny part, one of the 4 coins that PCGS evidently wrongly lumped in to a hold with my economy package I'm waiting on, was a CAC cleaned coin I cracked out, and I already looked at those grades and PCGS gave it a good AU50 grade, with no cleaning. So it's kind of sad when the major grading companies can't even agree with what coins are cleaned. Anyhow, thanks for watching and I'll have another 12 coins coming back soon via economy.
@petesquarterlifecrisis887 I may end up bidding on a few of yours at Great Collections then, that's where I buy the majority of mine at.. especially my Morgans. Yeap, pretty sad when the two big guns can't agree lol..yet, not really surprised. I should honestly stop caring what they think of my coins.
It was a tough grading, but WitterCoin is certainly not a scammer. They are based in San Francisco, and one of the larger coin shops in the US. Buying raw coins in auction format is always going to come with risk. Cleaning in many cases is subjective, I broke out a CACG graded cleaned coin, and got a straight grade from PCGS. At least two of the coins in this batch of graded coins I would deem subjective and could likely get to come back as a straight grade from PCGS if resubmitted.
Well it's certainly been awhile. The last time I watched one of your vids you had submitted several Un Peso's or perhaps it was Reale's or some mixture of the two? Anyway, you got pretty beat up on those coins with regard to not getting the grades you had hoped for/estimated, at the end of that video you were very dissatisfied and questioned , 'why you even bothered?' (many of those were very satisfactory/natural looking coins as I recall) Surprised to see you are still hard at it, and willing to take the punches and make submissions. Some nice looking coins in this group I would say. Perhaps it would be better to just buy some nice Capitol plastic holders for the various series you enjoy collecting and store/display them that way?(so you are not nauseated every time you read certain labels?) My feeling is, if I like a coin, then it's worth owning, if only to me. I try to pick decent examples of the coins/series I am interested in, that I feel are nicely representative of the design, not too hairlined, fiddled with, or harshly cleaned. A large percentage of Bust coins have had some cleaning, or been wiped, something. A large percentage of Seated coinage the same. Trade dollars, yep. Many Morgans and Peace too. Etc., etc. we could list lots of others. For me it's a question of , 'to what degree and severity', and then, what can I live with? Thinking reasonably, 50-100+ years is a long time to expect a coin to remain entirely unscathed in most instances. Also, I am often surprised by what the graders do straight grade/allow, I am talking about coins that to my eye, have most certainly seen a little 'improvement'. Can't say more, but I'm sure you and most other collectors have seen them too. Hang in there. If a coin is attractive to you, I think you have to ask yourself, how important are NGC's/PCGS's labels to me, and how much am I going to allow these labels to make me miserable?!
Lots of great points here. You are right, some of the grading game can make me miserable, but it's also fun, which is why I keep trying I guess. Overall even with the cleaned grades, I believe I did well on the coins based on the prices paid. But had they come back with straight grades, obviously would've done much better. You're also right, all of these raw coins have such a low chance of not having been altered at this point, something to keep in mind. I believe I'm going to make a 2nd video covering these same coins in a different light, since I was obviously disappointed with the grades, but in reality they are still amazing coins. That 1907-s/s Barber quarter I got, PCGS only has 3 total graded examples, so it's super rare, and very cool. Thanks for watching and for the response!
Do you think they knew that cap bust half was cleaned ? Otherwise they would have got it graded themselves . Dang I wouldn’t buy any raw coins of them you can’t tell me they don’t know . I feel bad for you
@@kaynef6637 with that one, I'd say it's probably a coin toss to who is going to call it cleaned. I still think I got a decent deal on it paying $400 for it, it's a beautiful coin. Would've been nice to get a straight grade though.
Most,or a great many, Bust halves in the market have been cleaned at this point. The issue is, that with some regularity the grading companies will straight grade some, seemingly willing to overlook or disregard some things, even though an 'improvement' may be apparent to those that know. A judicious wipe, a non 'hairlining' cleaning, or an ever so slight 'brightening', or slight stain removal, a 'natural' looking retone etc. And it's not confined to just the bust series either actually. Whether it passes muster with the grading company and straight grades, often seems to depend on the alignment of the stars what the grader had for lunch, and what background music is playing in the grading room too.
Thanks for the feedback. Ya I kind of lost my way after seeing a few disappointing results, but I'll likely make a new video where you can see the coins better, including magnification of the S/S.
Too bad the package wasn't lost and you could collect the insurance money, would have worked out fantastically.
ha ha, yes, I've wished that too.
Pete you got some really clean coins there...LOL
Tell me about it, hah.
I recommend buying graded coins. Not worth the amount of time and guess work on a coin's grade to end up cleaned. Then there's also the cost. The cartwheel luster sometimes gives clues if a coin has been cleaned. Good luck!
Certainly the safer route but it can be fun with some excitement (and disappointment) involved when playing the grading game.
Makes me wonder if coin dealers break cleaned coins out of cases and sell them raw...Seems far to many of them cleaned to be a coincidence

Depends the coin. If it's a key date it's just nice to know it's authentic.
They call just about anything "cleaned"
You pay 50-60$ just for that!
I will NEVER send to pcgs
Ya, kind of wish they would at least discount the fees when they return a questionable cleaned grade.
Hello Pete, I know it’s very frustrating to get back coins graded as cleaned. On the bright side your two gold coins straight graded well. Kevin
Thanks for watching. Ya, I definitely have a hard time hiding my frustration, hah. But man, waiting 2 months, looking forward to seeing those grades, really hurts.
amazing silver dollars, subscribed :)
Thanks, much appreciated!
I get wheel mark grades on mint set coins all the time! Especially on rare ones, pcgs definitely tries to control population
Ya, I've seen people send in coins straight out of mint packaging come back as questionable color. huh.

I’ve stopped buying from Witter. Overhyped coin dealers.

NGC would have gave a better job on the gradeing Nice coins anyway and thanks for ahowing us all.
Ya, I may try my luck sending one or two their way.
PCGS is a racket. They've gone off the reservation. The kids over there who are grading coins have obviously been blinded by hours of video game use.
It can certainly feel that way.
I think you need to find a new dealer for raw coins. Witter coin seems like some scammers to me.
