What I don't get is why there still isn't a railroad across it. To get from the south to the north of The Netherlands, or vice versa, you have to go all the way around the Ijsselmeer, a massive detour. It doesn't make any sense especially when you consider that there is still enough room to lay track and that construction would be incredibly cheap due to it all being government owned land and there being no structures or even terrain elevation issues.
Imo it would be an eyesore to have electricity cables along the entire thing. Besides, it's very windy there, maintenance costs would be way higher than average
Because there aren’t that many people who will travel from the north of Noord-Holland to Friesland. Most people stay and travel between Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht and other every city in that triangle (known as Randstad) I live near Amsterdam, and drove on the afsluitdijk just once in my whole life.
That was the plan and they tried. But it didn't seem profitable. You can see a groove for the tracks at Amsteldiepdijk. They build foundations at the sluice for train bridges. Space saved for the railroad are now used for the highway A7 when they broaden the road.

I remember driving the length of the sea wall during a road trip around Europe. It was an impressive structure and it's interesting to see the improvements being made.
As a Dutch person this is so much fun to watch, for me the Afsluitdijk is an amazing structure, but it also feels like "normal". In the Netherlands we have been building "dijken" for a long time, so the Afsluitdijk is just an advanced example. When we are talking about length, there is not yet a bigger sea wall in the Netherlands, however there are some more advanced sea walls in Zeeland.
I'm intrigued how simply strengthening the wall is better than raising it, at least in terms of rising sea levels / greater intensity storms. I didn't know I needed to know about this project but it is pretty cool and such a huge scale!
Because against the sea, a 7 mt tall reinforced wall is better than a 12 mt weak one...have you heard of corrosion? It doesn't matter how tall the wall is, if it's not strong enough to withstand the pounding of the water, its base will get eroded and then collapse.
Probably will happen in a few decades. But at the moment its erosion they have to deal with. So maby around 2050s or so, a new retrofit this time increasing the height.
I believe the logic is as follows: When you have a levee and water comes over the top during heavy weather, the levee starts to erode at the inside. Erosion at the inside combined with high water pressure on the outside breaches the levee and then floods the land behind it. If you reinforce the levee in such a way that you can take a lot of water coming over the top during a storm, nothing much happens. It is relatively a very small amount of water which doesn't hurt anyone as long as it doesn't erode the levee. This is a very efficient solution, you technically let the levee fail (water comes over the top), but as long as the structure can withstand it and the amount of water coming over is limited, nobody gets hurt. During extreme weather the afsluitdijk becomes a half-assed weir with harmless discharge.
And as a finishing touch, God created the Dutch. God: creates the Universe. The Dutch: Sir, you missed a spot here. God: That's what you are for. Do it yourself. The Dutch: creates the Netherlands.

Thank you B1M! Always finding interesting subjects and making concise, informative videos. I had never heard of this amazing feat of engineering.... now I feel a wee bit more informed about the world and impressed at humans' capacity of cleverly addressing issues. Thank you again for posting.
[Looking at the Earth from the moon]
It’s all the Netherlands?
“Always has been”
(Bang)
This is very impressive construction, even more impressive this started 100 years ago. In Poland we struggle with sewage treatment plant in our capital city and this has been build 20 years ago only 2 pipes under the river and we can’t find solution. Well done you ✌️
I don’t understand why youtube suggests this video to me 3 years later, but the sea wall remains impressive and I appreciate the accuracy of your video.
Other countries: Noo my houses are flooding
The Netherlands: haha sea wall go sploosh
stronk dijk
That other country is the Philippines
I chuckled
Stonks
Amazing! We need this between N.Ireland & Scotland it would be 12 miles long 👌
Very doable. Will cost you about 20 billion pounds, that is if you hire Danes, Norwegians, Japanese or Koreans to do it. Similar bridge/tunnel complex was recently build between Denmark and Sweden. Problem is politics. England and Ireland will not allow it. It is not in their interest.
Love my country!!
Lucky bastard!

Thanks for uploading. Proud of my country!

this in Portuguese literally means die
@@charlesdesouza9313 The joys of translating between different languages!
Reminder to self, when in Portugal don't yell out 'MORE'.
This kind of engineering marvel is required for "Mumbai" to reduce the flood water during rainy season.
Funds ?
Dutch Engineers made Mumbai
Yes, Mumbai is rich enough now. There are many smart people in India. Study how similar problems have been solved in other countries, gradually learn, make a plan and make your city a better place to live. It's not so difficult.

Nice, I love your videos, keep 'em coming!
Also nice to see a video about De Afsluitdijk, as a Dutchman I am proud of this.
Love your videos
Amazing project. Thank You 🇺🇸
This is the best ad i've seen, watched the whole thing xD
Why is this channel soo good
Hardwork, drive to stand out.
"Afsluitdijk" sounds so fun when an English speaker pronounces it!
I'm just wondering where he got the "o" from. Lol.
Yeah and they misled by the word Dyke instead of Dijk.
Lmao the ofschloedoik
He isn't.
Jokes on you bich, I speak English, Spanish, and German. I find It strange that man Elitists in Europe look down on English speakers, yet you guys can't properly pronounce many basic words. 🙄 (Especially in Spanish.)
I am praying for the Dutch and others below sea level country people to happy life for them and their next generation too🙏😇🤓
Thank you.
This is one of my favourite channels.
Damn that is some serious engineering!! Thanks for all you do in these videos :)
Never clicked so fast on a B1M video.
Does anyone know which software they used for rendering between 2:58 to 3:00?
Autodesk construction cloud i think. It was mentioned at the start of the video
Paint.
Fast becoming my favourite RUclips Channel. Thanks.
Louisiana and New Orleans should be paying attention here..... They could definitely learn a thing or two.
Those have flood problems?
US motto to kill all progress: "Not invented here".
That is good. Smart Netherlands.
Mother Nature: You dare challenge me mortal!?
Dutch: *YES*
I live in the Netherlands and it is perfect to travel from Friesland to Noord Holland
Love this channel. Wish the videos were longer
The power of a wardrobe voice. Supporters will know LOL.
Hahaha - we see you 😉
The B1M is definitely one of the best channels on RUclips 🔥🔥
This is so cool. The afsluitdijk is less than 30 minutes from where i live and the B1M made a video about it haha
Check out The Tim Traveller too.
It literally looks like you just smacked your keyboard for a sec.
Ey ik woon er 5 min vandaan
Thanks to the best construction and engineering channel on all of RUclips for another great video. Really interesting to learn about these sea walls I never knew they were necessary in the Netherlands
best video with superb narration
thanks B1M
Great video. Been subbed for a while now and look forward to a new video every Wednesday. B1M, I would love to see a video on how the construction of HS2 is helping Birmingham shake off its image of '60's concrete jungle' with large scale regeneration projects it has planned.
The Dutch always knows how to exploit the waters.
Video idea: UK housing shortage and how it is being tackled
Thanks! We have actually made 3 different videos on that.
Is it being tackled?
@@leonardlangner9949 not rly
@@TheB1M thx for the reply
Something the netherlands isnt tackling enough haha
Wow!! Engineers all working together. The use of technology to monitor and make improvements to the seawave breaker.
Your video has lots of pretty colors and makes me happy. 🤖
I'd say this is one of the wonders of the world.
Would love know more about The Netherlands in general. Greetings from Denmark
It is just a few miles away. Come and visit...

Greetings from The Netherlands
We also fought together against the Swedes! And the King of Denmark made on admiral de Ruyter a knight of some Danish order after he broke the Swedish siege of Copenhagen! Rawr!
those poor fish kids that went to play on the other side of the wall and never were able to come back home
That was sad.
I have been there last year. Very impressive structure and a master piece!
Yes there is an ad but that's cleverly blended in the video. If only we had more productions like this!
Keep up the good work.
I knew this video would be about the netherlands
excellent. well played, you
