This made me dig out my copy of terror and wonder the gothic imagination , the exhibition catalgue/book i got from the british library for their history of gothic fiction and horror event, the exhibition was years ago but features the castle of Otranto heavily. However i couldn't remember if i read it afterwards or not, not well enought to say i have, although my reading journal said i did, and this plot seems incredibly familiar, so lets assume my log is accurate. So not memorable enough for me until prompted, but im tempted to have a reread now after your video. Talking for books mentioned in books and soecifically gothic fiction, north hanger abbey is a massive list if gothic books, mainly radcliffe but i think castle of otranto is also mentioned there.
@@storytoob pretty sure there more than just the one mentioned but I'm pretty sure that the main one referred to is the monk that as Radcliffe in general.
I'll always be grateful to the Gothic movement for the masterpiece that is Frankenstein. Okay then Yolanda, I've never read Dickens... recommend me some of your favourites please? 😊 I'll definitely be checking this out!
Frankenstein’s great! My favourite is A Tale of Two Cities (also not super long, which I think helps as an intro to his writing style). I’ve never read Great Expectations but I’m planning to get to it this year
I was listening to this on headphones and the spooky music scared the shit out of me the first time it played 😂. This was awesome! I really like this type of video.
As a lover of Gothic fiction, this book has been on my someday TBR for years. I love a book with great atmosphere and an eerie sense of unease, so Gothic novels of any genre tend to work well for me. I’d love to see a video one day about Gothic books you recommend, especially any vampire novels.
Definitely Dracula and… not Interview with the Vampire 😂 read it last year and did not enjoy it at all (although I understand why it’s a genre classic and I’m glad I read it)
I'm slowly making my way through all the videos. So I haven't watched them all yet and I don't watch to many book youtubers, but if I had to say what this channels niche is so far it's the mix of fantasy with non-fantasy and (this is the bigger one) putting the book in a historic perspective. What I mean by the latter is often it seems you both compare books to books that came before them and call out potential inspirations and shared themes, and more but then this comment would be very long lol.
I’ve never consciously thought about that as something we do intentionally, but I like that! Thanks for pointing it out😊 glad you’re enjoying the videos!
Nice video! Have I read Castle of Otranto? Yes. The Monk? Also yes. Ann Radcliffe? Most certainly. Would actually highly recommend her as she is credited as one of the inventors of the psychological novel. And as you like Dickens you should put his friend Wilkie Collins on the TBR. Woman in White of course as his contribution to the Gothic Novel but, as you like crime fiction, also The Moonstone. It's seen as the first English crime novel and a nice example how the Gothic morphs into another genre. The unicorns will be back in October. So if you would like to talk about Gothic fiction let me know. All the best from your Dublin YT neighbor and neighborhood unicorn herder!
Wilkie Collins and Ann Radcliffe are both super high on my tbr! Would love to chat about gothic fiction some time, spooky season sounds like a fitting time 👀
Great concept! I have also read a few books based on them being mentioned in some of my favorite books and series!
Such a fun thing to do!
Great job putting this together! It was informative and fun and reminded me of all the stuff I learned and then later forgot 😄
Thank, Jarred! That was the aim😂
Such a great video Yolanda! I loved hearing the insights you’ve gleaned about Gothic fiction. Some of my favorite books are gothic fiction.
I’m beginning to suspect that some of my favourite books are also (or will be ) gothic fiction😂 thanks Chas!

You just made me want to reread Northanger Abbey for all those gothic fiction recommendations😂 Radcliffe is high on my list!
