Building a Floating Desk With a Drawer

  • I built a floating desk in my daughter's bedroom into a strange nook that didn't have a lot of practical uses. Adding in a drawer created additional storage that will allow her to use it for crafts, storage, and studying!

    Scribing plywood into an an opening with three closed sides is a difficult task, but you did a credible job of making it happen. Your desk looks fantastic, I am sure your daughter will enjoy her Mom’s handy work !

    Much respect for showing mistakes. Even more for doing your own work. Nice to see younger folks who have it together.

    As a professional carpenter of over 30 years, three walled shelves still give me night sweats. Cardboard templates is the best way to handle those, but that means more work and more time.

    At 5:33, that was scary. Please use a miter fence or a sled next time when the width (perpendicular to the cut) exceeds the length (in the direction of the cut) . We don't want you to get impaled on a piece of plywood. Otherwise, nicely done on the overall project!

    Instead of a Compass you could’ve just press the pencil flat against the wall, another method is to put a thin strip of metal or a ruler against the wall and then just trace the other edge of the board and then just measure the difference. With gaps that smart I usually just eyeball it and look at the wide end of the gap and measure that and then mark that on the other side of the board and draw straight line between the short corner in the mark on the other end of the board. Another option is to use trim if you don’t wanna deal with it at all. Lol. I built just like this a couple of times, the drawer slides was a great idea, I just made desktops and sometimes are hanging shelf to put my computer on. I never thought of dancing on top of the table to hold it down. 😂
    I think it looks great. :)

    For me, the entertaining part about your videos is how your mind works. Here's the thing, for anyone that has not built a drawer, a drawer is *not* a box. A box is far easier to build than a drawer. Once you have built several of each you'll understand.
    Embrace the 45* lock miter bit - embrace it! Once you get the hang of working with one you will hate using pocket holes. Yes, there is a time and place for pocket holes, however, In this case a lock miter joint would have been better.
    A little tip for the usual pocket hole 'creep' (which happens even with Kreg clamps) is to glue it first or use the trusty CA and activator. With the CA and activator it would not have allowed 6:23 to happen.

    I love this channel and love your creativity!!! I do a lot of remodeling and I to like thinking outside the box (Ex: Remodeled the kitchen and put LED strips under the cabinets by the kick plate so that I don't have to turn on the lights in the middle of the night and blind myself) I enjoy watching your channel, your projects, and the way you do things for the normal people who don't have 1,000's of dollars in fancy tools can be creative as well. Keep up your amazing work.

    Congrats on your first drawer! The desk turned out great! Getting those bevels to line up perfectly is really difficult. Rather than doing 45 degree angles on both, you can do one at 45 and the other at 46, that way there is a gap on the inside that you wouldn't see, but the corner edges line up nice and tight. I think it looks great as is though!

    awesome videos, I def identify with a lot of the stuff you do. First, I am always trying to do projects on a small budget and that means not always having the best/ right tools, like you. Second, I see you are always working on the floor of your garage with table saw and miter saw, me too! Third, we both shop A LOT at Menards, I can tell by the brand of tools you have, lol

    Melissa, how did you know where exactly to mount the drawer slides?

  • @Cartier_specialist
    @Cartier_specialist 3 года назад

    Retired Journeyman Carpenter here. You definitely need an actual compass. Next time just cut the piece a little larger than needed. Scribe by holding the board tilted up and set your compass to the largest gap. Repeat for the other side. Additionally you can always bevel cut the back side slightly and use a planar to scribe it to fit and then you aren't scribing the entire thickness of the material.

  • @johnbotica7136
    @johnbotica7136 3 года назад

    Why not use a regular scrib?

  • @randyc5650

    !!! Melissa, please never use your rip fence to crosscut stock. See grieske's comment below. You were very very lucky. Lookup crosscutting with a table saw. Great job.

    Inspiration is great many ways . It helps to discover new things and to learn something new we never done before or could not imagine. It can be with creating things ,but it can be spiritual inspiration, things what are hidden from us so we never find , only with our own desires to find the truth and leading of our God .
