This is my everyday off work life random videos of repairs body work painting small engine repair
In this video im going to be talking about the Ford Escape /Mazda Tribute
looking into some of the problems and issues of this model
ill give an overall rating towards the end of the video
    from 2008 to 2011 models
Rust damage to the rear quarter panels and tailgate is often mentioned by the owners in the Rust Belt.
Front sway bar links go bad often resulting in a knocking noise from the front end when driving slowly over small bumps. Again, it's an easy and inexpensive repair: $150-$230 (parts and labor). This thread describes the DIY repair.
Corrosion at the liftgate release switch can cause the rear glass or the liftgate not to open from the outside. The release switch is the button located under the liftgate chrome bezel that you press to open the liftgate or the rear glass. The switch is also inexpensive ($25 at RockAuto) and is easy to replace.
The hinges that hold the liftgate glass can also corrode in the Rust Belt. If you see the traces of corrosion around the hinges, have them checked, as a bad hinge might separate creating a safety hazard. A pair of aftermarket hinges costs from $30 to $70; the replacement is not very expensive. See these RUclips videos for more info.
If your A/C blower motor works only in 3-rd and 4-th speed, it's very likely that the blower motor resistor has failed. The part costs from $30 to $60; aftermarket parts are cheaper. The blower motor resistor is located on top of the HVAC duct behind the glove box and is easy to replace.

Many owners mention the leaking left axle shaft seal in the 2009-2012 Escapes. Symptoms include dropped transmission fluid level and fluid leak on the driveway, in the left front area. The repair involves replacing the seal, inner CV-joint housing and possible axle bushing. The repair kit is available from a Ford dealer. This repair cost $350-$620

The Escape is one of the few small SUVs that still looks like a truck. Its square shape provides excellent all-around visibility and interior space. 2011 Ford Escape2011 Ford Escape. The Escape comes with a 4-cylinder or V6 engine, in a front- or all-wheel drive configuration. It drives comfortably and is very practical inside, which is why it was the best selling small SUV for many years.
A used Ford Escape is not very expensive, but what are the common problems and how expensive are the repairs? What model is better, 4-cylinder or V6? We've done our research and will try answering these questions:
Reported problems: A front ABS sensor ring (tone ring) may break causing the ABS light to come on and the traction control acting erratically. See the photo. The tone ring replacement is not very expensive ($15-25 part plus $80-$180 labor).

First, the 2012 Escape is still the same body style. They changed in 2013. My 2012 (I’m the second owner) has 93,000 miles and has the 6 cylinder engine. I’ve had very few of the problems you’ve described. I recently had to replace the sway bar ends, and the back hatch is rusting at the bottom inside lip. The back fenders are starting to show some rust. The backup camera in wet weather likes to go out due to the connector inside the hatch getting moisture. My solution so far that works is to slam the hatch hard and it comes back on for months until the next time it goes out. Other than oil changes, front brakes, and tires, I’ve done nothing else to it. With good tires, it’s great in the snow and has been one of the best vehicles I’ve ever owned.

Thanks for the video, We have had a 2008 v6 awd for a few years now on the west coast . Oddly I have never had any of the same problems yet at 220 km. I have had a coil burn out and recently a p0106 code , Map sensor which turned out to be simply the rubber hoses from the MAP sensor. Apparently the previous owner had a trans problem which was fixed for about $500. The rear hatch switch has also gone and I have one on order. The muffler went at 200k but that's to be expected. I have found that alot of parts are available through Walmart Canada of all places . But over all we are happy with it and would buy another.

Most of those problems must be more common up north… Like the paint chipping around the fender wells, the back glass hinge, and the wheel bearings… I have heard the sway bar end links are junk but my mom hasn’t had any problems other than the fans… She gave the Escape to me last week and it’s so nice… I’m in love with it…😂 It’s an 08 limited with the 3.0 and 4wd… I would have called it all wheel drive personally since it doesn’t have high and low range but to each their own… It literally looks brand new under the hood and the undercarriage… I was amazed honestly… Thanks for the video, I’m sure I’ll have it until the bitter end…😂 I’ve always been a Ford man anyway…

Interesting video, really appreciate your review as it is honest and based upon owning. I am also in Canada and haven't noticed some of the common issues you refer to, however some i have experienced. My beast is a 2011 Ford Escape AWD 3.0L with 350,000km/220,000 miles on the odometer. For one the front end stabilizers are an issue that is very common, very inexpensive to fix however just more of an inconvenience. The rear window latch/hinge is also quite common, replaced only 1 of them however i see i might need to do the other at some point. I believe i have to replace a front wheel bearing however they have lasted 350,000km so i cannot fault that one. Other than that some rust on the wheel wells and rear hatch however i took care of that.
So overall it has been an exceptional vehicle, no other maintenance issues other than oil changes and brakes. Interestingly enough even the muffler system has been solid, was under the vehicle when i did some minor bodywork (wheel wells) and it was remarkably in very good condition still.
So have to say the has been an exceptional vehicle, easily an 8.0 - 8.5 out of 10 imho.Only real issue in my thoughts are those darn stabilizers, but the flip side is it is super easy to replace as cost is very inexpensive and you can do it yourself and no adjustments needed. Truth be told however i have only had 2 or 3 stabilizers replaced in over 10 years with 350,000km so not the greatest concern with that kind of mileage.
The AWD system is one of the better ones on the market, i have another manufacturer SUV with AWD which sucks in comparison. The Escape is almost as good as the mechanical AWD that i had on an older GMC Jimmy.

IMO the way to go if you can is with the 4 cylinder 2.5 in Front wheel drive if you want simplicity, my dad had one he put 350,xxx Km on with few issues, my little brother bought one in this configuration (2010 model) and he loves it, we just found one for my girlfriend I've had to do a couple little things to (exhaust hanger, valve cover gasket, spark plugs, tires) but she loves it dearly and its easy to work on. now we have a 2007 ranger with 3.0 and a manual transmission, and the 2011 escape with the 2.5L and a 6 speed auto. parts are cheap and both are reliable. small SUV and small truck... works out good! just check the subframe on the escape especially before you buy one. they like to rust out and fall apart.

We have a 2008 Ford Escape. Maintenance schedule is change transmission fluid every 30,000 miles. Have not had problem with wheel bearings (now at 120,000 miles). The front coil springs did snap due to heavy snow load and -40 degrees up here in Alaska. Also had to replace the water pump and belt. In cold weather, problem with fuel tank venting.

    Thank you, very nice video.
    Maybe consider. . .
Fuel consumption based on Milles/K Per Tank has too many variables to make it a reasonable measurement. Most obviously the refill point is widely inconsistent at best. The petro vendors, gas pumps have an automatic shut off pressure (determines full tank) also has a great variation.
These 2 factors alone can reasonably give 3 digit fluctuations per tank.
Not to mention, Tank Size when comparing other vehicles (and the SUV says "It's only a small tank in cold water")...
Besides... Ya all in Canada get about ⅓ further on a tank of fuel anyway 6XX in Canada while only 4XX in the US.😎
    Thanks for the video!

My previous Escape (2005 Gen1) had the rear glass hinges problem which came with the vehicle when I bought it used. I replaced them with aftermarket ones and problem solved. My current 2008 Gen2 came with good hinges. I believe the rear glass hinges are just a poor design. I've never had the need to use them so it's a moot point for me. I just open the rear hatch for better access to the cargo floor.

I own 2012 Ford Escape Duratec Engine V6 . Last of Year batch after they changed the body style. Bought new in 2012 now it's at 120,500km Mark to date . Had Issues with heater core under warranty & was fixed . I was Lucky warranty saved me on that one😌. Replaced Blower motor switch after 3 years of ownership & Replaced front stabilizer linkage after 9 years of owning , currently replaced with MOOG 80296 part number a year ago & still going . Front Brake pads was replaced at 70,000km plus depending on driving pattern.
I now think that the rear stabilizer linkage is failing ,had noticed clunking noise one time from rear and now it disappeared still driving until I'm 100% certain or when the noise comes back will get it replaced . Recently had Spark Pugs replaced & I was told some traces of oil is was found inside the plugs but yet to figure out the source of the leak .
Overall no major issues than what was mentioned . Periodic maintenance is done as per owners manual. Oil change ,fluid change etc etc . Gas Mileage is OK but not so perfect .what can you expect from a V6 Engine. Does approximately 336km on 44 liters mix with city & highway driving . . Give or take .
Two things is a common problem in my opinion so far with my experience Blower motor switch & stabilizer Linkage . I don't know if any one had issues with heater core problem.
Overall it's not a great vehicle & not a bad Vehicle . It is a keeper and well worth it unlike other clunkers on the road . Find one with Low mileage that has been well maintained and you get yourself a decent SUV.

Even using Apple Car Play was new to me. I only have my current vehicle a little bit a year and a half. A friend of mine just gotten a 2022 Ford Escape last year. I have a 2011 FWD I4 Standard @280K. I have had a few other problems and some you have mentioned. I had the issue with the rear window hinges, which I coated the underside of the new ones to stop the corroding from the inside, and the heater fan controller. I may have the suspension link issue (I'll check next time I have it on my lift). I have never changed the wheel bearings. I have had the alternator go and the rear window wiper not returning to home, so it would drain the battery every night. I have changed the front brake pads once, but should have change the rotors at the same time. Maybe next time. There are a couple of other things I know about. One I am working on now. I got the P0455 code. I hope it is just a cleaning of the capless fuel filler hole, but it could be an EVAP valve. Also, there was a recall on a torque sensor in the steering. This hasn't happened to me, but I have heard about it. Also, the electric steering in V6's have been know to dry out the lubricant due to its location near the exhaust header (in the I4 the steering isn't near the exhaust header) and cause you to have to replace the steering system. A friend had this issue and it was an expensive part (~$500CAD). I like that you put this together. I have heard a clunk in the suspension, but it always seems tight when I have it up on the lift for an oil change. I will look a little closer at these links.

Wheel Bearings - if you go through that many wheel bearings & If you are a "do it yourself" then it makes sense to pickup a relatively inexpensive press....
The rear hinges are corroding from the winter road treatment ingredients. If you simply hose off at least the back gate, once every couple of weeks or during the road treatment season the hinges won't corrode.

Still have my 2010 4-cylinder (290, 000km). Bought new, the drive shaft was out of balance right away and was fixed. Transmission was rebuilt at 4 yrs under warranty. Failed again a year later and was replaced under warranty, which had a month left on it). Been fine ever since. Electronic steering column fail around the 11 year mark...very expensive to repair! I've had most of the issues mentioned in the video. Relatively easy to repair lots of videos on RUclips. I've become quite the amateur Ford mechanic. There's almost no sound insolation so I added more on my own. Changed out the cheap speakers. My 08 had 317 thousand and was going strong i parked it due to a.c and cruze.

I have a 2010 V6 Escape... owned since 2012. The blower-motor has failed TWICE, so I just gave up replacing it. My problem is some sort of starting issue/fuel leak somewhere and nobody can seem to figure it out. Ford said they could replace "pretty much everything" but that was much more expensive than the total vehicle's book value, so I wasn't going to get that done. I'm going to try the purge valve, and hope that's all it is. But otherwise it's been a great vehicle that I hope lasts at least another 5-10 years. They just don't make them like they used to, though.

What you don't want to happen is have the alternator go out its a real pain to change them. I have 315000 on mine and still rolling never fixed a bearing yet lol

230,000 miles on my 2011 and recently replaced the strut assembly, inner outer tie rods, lower control arms, rotors, pads, stabilizer links... All original except the stabilizer links. They are awful. I drove the car until around 130,000 miles I started getting a rattle and I replaced the stabilizer links and ever since then they've been absolute garbage. Constantly breaking now. Also, after replacing everything I found out my rubber brake line on the passenger side was collapsing and acting like a check valve so those got replaced as well. I do wonder if your ball bearing issue is them constantly shrinking and expanding from being in much colder conditions in Canada. I'm on the Gulf Coast and my bearings are all factory. No problems yet. All that but I absolutely love the Ford Escape. I had a 2007 that I loved and switched to the 2011 which I think is the best model they've ever made. Best looking by far. Especially with the black out package.

I live in Tasmania, Australia. I own a 2010 Escape and have never had any of the issues you seem to get in Canada. Maybe the extreme cold has something to do with the brackets on the back window? as well as the paint peeling. My escape has done around 134,000klms and apart from oil and filter changes we have not had a problem especially with stabilizers having to be replaced so regularly. as well as bearings. Anyway enjoyed the video and I'm a retired auto mechanic specializing in wheel allignments so found the stabilizer issue very intersting. All the best from Tasmania. Australia. I have a 2008 Escape with 152000 miles on it. Never had a issue with it that you experienced. I changed the gaskets on the right side under a extended warranty at 70,000 miles. Then new control arms and fixing a anti lock break ring. Other wise worn belt, worn out shocks and regular maintenance. I guess being in the lower 48 the weather is not a consistent cold and is better for the longevity.

I purchased my 2009 Escape V6 new and now have almost 184,000 miles on it. I replace the sway bar links and blower motor resistor roughly every 3 years. My front wheel bearings needed replacement at 150,000 and I purchased the wheel bearing hub and knuckle assembly made by Moog for a total of $300 in parts. It was easier for me to do it this way than to pay a shop. I've never had the rear wheel bearings or rear glass hinge issue you experienced. What I do have is my timing chain cover is leaking oil which I guess is common, and it is simply to expensive to fix. I need to add a quart around 4,000 miles so I change the oil and filter instead. Thanks for your review. I enjoyed it and also give the Escape a 7 out of 10.

    One more thought... Road Noise!
Most is from the rear of the vehicle...
The rear side, inside, panels plastic material & distance to both, the body structure & wheel wells seems to optimize the echo of road noise in the Escape...
Ford engineering apparently recognized this as, so foul, even the XLS model has the same nicely installed insulation behind the rear panels...
If you want to reduce road noise...
    It needs More!
Use a Fluffy insulation...(Like fiberglass BUT Definitely NOT Fiberglass type insulation - as these areas are a primary cabin air circulation point) -
    INSTALL...
Very LOOSELY yet relatively fill the air space with the insulation.
    Ooo how quiet she rides...

    Good review.
You keep referring to the 4-cylinder or the 8-cylinder engines, but it would have been nice if you had mentioned that he first year of Gen2 still had the Gen1 V6 3.0 engine without VVT. This is what I have and in spite of the lower horsepower and mpg's, with the 4-speed automatic transmission (easier access for ATF change), the power is ample for my needs. The only negative theing that I've heard about this engine is the first few years of the Gen1 engine had cam cover bolts which would back out and destroy the engine. I had mine checked during the "big" tune-up (spark plugs, coils and valve cover gaskets, etc.) and they were still torqued at spec. My engine has 148K miles on it and burns no oil, has no leaks and runs perfectly.

I am planning to buy a 2011 ford escape 2.4 V6, 4*4 which has 205 Km at 6 k which runs and looks great! It is in Toronto. So, I am wondering if I am paying too much or is it a good deal?

Check the RF engine subframe for heavy rust. Had to take my 2009 XLT V6 off the road here in Kitchener at 220,000 kms. Too dangerous to drive and too expensive to fix.

this dude lost my confidence when he quoted what you can buy one of these used for now, yeah don't know where you live dude but In the USA they run multiple times that price quote depending on mileage of course but yeah I would expect to buy one with 350,000 miles on it for a grand to 2 grand.
